I Shortly after noon yesterday Mr. t Charles H. Collier died at his home on ( the Ialand. at the corner ot North Broadway and Indiana street*. Mr. Collier bad been unwell for months, but noth- 1 ing serious was for a long time suspected to be the matter. Several weeks ago be waa taken gravely ill and was confined to hia bed for aome time, but again 1 seemed to be recovering, and waa able 1 to be about till within a few days. When , last confined to hia bed it became appar- , ent that hia ailment waa Brigbt's disease , in an aggravated form, and hia death has been feared ever since. He waa tho Secretary of the Fire and Marine Insurance Company, an active man in several building associations, : and a useful and active citlien whose ! place will be very hard to fill. A brother, a sister and a sister-in-law I of Mr. Collier's lived near Boston, and he not long ago visited them. They 1 were telegraphed the sad intelligence ol bis death yesterday afternoon. The 1 funeral will occur Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from bis late residence. 1 a SKrrca or nis life. Charles Henry Collier was bom in t , Boston, September 26, 1340, and came i West in early life. His education waa ' obtained in the public schools of his native city and at the Ohio University ; ' at Athens, Ohio, from which institution , be graduated as a Bachelor of Arts, in , the class of 1803 He located in Wheel| ing'and became Principal of the Second ward public school, where be remained for three years. In 1800 he ontered the [ office of the lato Jobn Bishop, who for many years was the leading man in insurance in the city of Wheeling. While ' with Mr. Biahop his duties covered all , the branches of the insurance business, and lie waa not long in mistering all of tbeir details and proving tiimself generally useful. He remained in the Insurance business until 1872, wben ha was elected Principal of the Llnsly Institute, i In 1873 the Fire and Marine Insurance n/unntnv wan nrunnitpiI. nnil Mr. Collier became fta Secretary. From that time until his death he has filled that rej sponsible position with entire satisfac* y tion to the stockholders and patrons of ' the company; Mr. Collier was a man o( broad scholarshin. He had been a life-long student, anu had ao systematized his time as to bo able to give a few hours each day to classical research. For twelve vears he Q was a member of the Board of Educai. tion, four years of which time he was . President. In his early manhood he e became a Free Mason and filled many responsible positions in the craft, includfng Grand Lecturer and Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of West Vir8 ginia. He was a member of the M. E. 8 church, and for over a quarter of a cene tury taught a Bible class in Sabbath e school. A wife and several children ij survive him. " TO OB BURIED BY TIIB GRAND LODOB. There will be a short religious service at the residence, 0 conducted by Rev. Dr. Gushing, pastor 8 of the Fourth Street M. E. Church, to which the deceased belonged. This ser. vice will begin promptly at 2 o'clock.
