Peo. 18.?An explosion occurred this morning on tho Amor lean lino steamship 8t. Paul while the vonbvI wan at her dock at tho root of Fulton street, North river. Four men have been tuken to tho hospital and live men art* said to havo been killed. Preparations war? being nrndo for the sailing of tho vessel at 11 o'clock, hut fortunately nono of tho passengers were aboard of the vessel. Tho explosion was of torrldo force and shook tho big vessel from stem to stem. Following tho report was the sound of escaping steam. it poured up to the deck from the engine room In clfcds and completely enveloped the vicinity. From above the uolso of the escaping steam could be heard the cries of tho men who had been ut work In the engine room Injured by the explosion. The nature of the explosion was such that It rendered access to the locality extremely dllllcult. As quickly as possible the steum was turned off. Almost simultaneously four half dead men scrambled up the iron stairway leading from the engine room, and fell prostrate upon the port side of the vessi-1. They were hurried into the cabin and restoratives udtnlnlstered to them. Two other men terribly scalded were found In an almost unconscious condition lylnftnear the bottom of the stairway and were lifted up to the dockAs Boon as the steam had cleared away sutllcleutly t?? render seeing the surroundings possible five men were found lying near in various parts of the compartments dead. They had all been scalded to deuth and their faces and those parts of the body which were not covered by their clothing looked as If they had been parboiled. The bodies wore covered .over where they were rouna lying witn pieces or tarpaulin, und word was dent to the coroner's office. The greatest excitement prevailed aboard of the vessel for a time and It \vw thought that the boiler had blown up. The force of the explosion was to groat that It blew out a portion of the bulkhead and shattered every particle of glast within a radius of fifty feet. On Investigation it was found that the main steum pipe at the bend near the bulkhead had burnt. The pipe is sixteen Inches In diameter and extends from one end of the ship to the other. It was said by Superintending Engineer Clark thnt he did not know exactly what the amount of the pressure at the time was. but that he wus sure that It was not nearly sufficient to cause the pipe to burst. He said that he was not able at this time to tell Just what caused the explosion. whether there was not sufficient room to allow of expansion or whether there was a (law In the costing. Mr. Clark said that ho won sure that the vessel could not soil within a week, for It would require at least that tlm* to make the necessary repairs. The steamer has made three round trips. The probable result of the injuries received by Wilson. Vesper, Folker and Heard cannot be foretold by the surgeons. It is likely, however, that some of the men cannot survive. MISSIONARIES SAFE IS tit (he Atrocllle* Continue?Tnrlu Still ItutclirrtiiR. CONSTANTINOPLE. Dec. 18.?Replying to a telegraphlo message from the United 8tates Minister Terrell. missionaries at Marsovan telegraphed yesterday that they were all safe and guarded by troops. A letter dated December 2 has been received here from an American missionary at Caesarea, giving harrowing details of the horrors of the previous three days The writer says that the Turks swarmed through the streets and Into the houses, stoning, dubbing and killing every Armenian within reach. The American mission, however, was not harmed, evidently owing to ordem issued by the Turkish officials. Hut. the missionary continues, the Larbartty practiced parses all description. Men and women were literally hacked to pieces, and a thousand pcroona were killed on the afternoon of November 30 The missionary also says that the Turkish soldieru confessed that the government gave them permission to pillage. The boys of the American school are all aafe, the letter concludes, and 109 fugitives are being sheltered In the mission buildings; but the safety of the missionaries depends upon the presence of the troops who are guarding them. PURELY IMAGINARY. Tlie Silly story Abont SrrrtUry Herbert's ClirUlmiM Prrarnta, WASHINGTON. D. C.. Dec. II.?It Is learned at the Navy departrnont that an article which In going tho rounds of the press Is causing tho secretary some annoyance by Its statements, though probably the article was not so Intendod. It speaks about Secretary Herbert's Christmas presents and of models of battleships being went to his house as playthings fur his grandmm. The publication also states that a model Is being made of every ship In the navy. Tho only foundation for the argument Is that models of the deficient classes of battleships uro made and have been for some time pu*l. about one every year. These are deposited In the navy department nnd none of them have ever been In the secretary's house. Miss Herbert hns not been In Washington for six months and no grandchild of H?cretary Herbert's ever sawone of the models. Tho publication Is wholly imaginative. Iiilrr-Sfnli* ('aiiiiiirrr?
