Wet zel and Marlon counties to Moundsvllle yesterday to attend the convention of the second senatorial district, whkh met for the purpose of nominating a candidate for state senator. The convention was called to order by J. D. Burley, of Marshall, secretary lion. S. XV. MnthriVH. of the senatorial executive committee, who named as temporary chairman, Hon. John W. Mason, of Marlon, ex Unlted States commissioner of Internal revenue. Mr. Mason assumed the posi tion and in a neat speech accepted the honor conferred upon him. Squire W. W. Selby, of Wetzel, was made tempo rary secretary. The next business of the convention was the selection of committees. A recess was taken during which the several delegations organized and chose their members on the various committees. The organization of the delegation* was as follows: MursliaU county?S. M. The committee on resolutions report ed and the report was adopted. The full text of the resolutions is as follows: Resolved, That we give our unqualified approval to the resolutions and platform of principles adopted by the Republican national convention, which met at St. Louis; that we rejoice to know the Re publican party has the courage to .speak in no equivocal terms upon the great questions of taxation and finance; that we are heartily in favor of protection, reciprocity and good money, and are op posed to free trade, fifty-cent dollars and wild-cat banks. Resolved, That we pledge to our gallant standard bearers, McKlnlcy and liobart, the loyal anij enthusiastic support of all the Republicans of this senatorial district. Resolved, That*to our efficient senators, lion. J. 11. Furbeo and Hon. J. A. Hoge, be extended the thanks of this district lor their valuublo services In the s;ate senate, and that wo con?ratulate them on being permitted to assist In tho election of Hon. S. U. Klkins to tho United States senate, and thus performing a noble work lor the state and country. The next business was the call, by counties, for nominations for state sen ator. Mr. Purdy, of Marshall, present ed the name of S. W\, ("Jack") Mat- j hews, of MoundsvIIle. Mr. Scott, on behalf of Marion county, seconded the nomination. Mr. McGee, of Wetzel, al so seconded Mr. Mathews' nomination, and upon motion by Mr. Mclntlre, of Wetzel, the nomination of Mr. Mat- 1 hews was made by acclamation. Calls i of "Mathews," were heard and the I chair appointed Messrs. Purdy, Scott and Mclntlre to escort the nominee to I the platform. Amid great applause Mr. Mathews was Introduced and his re marks were well received. In part he said that he rejoiced to know that his name would be upon the ticket that was going to win next November, with Mc Klnley for President. Atkinson for gov ernor and Dovener for Congress. Dur ing his few remarks he was heartily cheered. Chairman Mason then addressed the convention in a most interesting and earnest speech. He dwelt mainly upon the money question and In a plain man ner presented clearly that subject. His remarks were forcibly put. full of good thoughts and timely. The convention then adjourned sine die.
