Mary L. McKee, at he comer of North Huron and Crom well streets, on I ho north end of the Isltund. and before the llro department arrived the flame* had communicated to the cottago belonging to Robert Mc Kee on tho north, and to the two-story dwelling owned and occupied David A. Morgan. All the buildings woro frame and the flames spread with fearful r;w pldlty, and It was thought for a time that many other houses would be burn ed. , ? The wind was blowing briskly from the west and at limes the flames reached entirely across the street, nnd had It not been for the wet roofs a conflagration would have resulted. The flro was discovered by the motor man and conductor of eu\ electrlo csir coming from Martin's Ferry. The house was not completed nnd the plastering was Just being finished by Ch.irles Mc Ctfrty, the contractor. A flre was kept burning In the middle room down stairs for the purpose of drying the house, nnd It ih supposed that the flre started In that room, although the motorman says when he discovered the blaco lt looked as though It was conflnid to tho up stairs of the new house. The occupants of the adjoining houses were aroused by Mr. J acquets Front, who was early upon the sccn?\ hut the families of Meitrs. McKee and Morgan had barely time to esciipe and to a.ive their household effects was an utter Im poslblllty. Mrs. McKee's house Was a two-story structure, valued ut 52,000. but of course this will bo a loss to the contractor, who It Is understood carries Insurance on all unllnlshed work. Mr. Robert McKee places his los# u.t J2.000 and has Insurance of $700 In the ?Morgan agency. So rapid were the tlames In spreading that Mr. McKee ha- scarcely time to get his child out of Mo burning house. David A. Morgan's loss is placed at }3.00<>r with Insurance In the Franklin, of Wheeling. Mr. Morgan was at work nt the Aetna-Standard mill when the fir*; bro*e out and when he ?reached home the house was !n ashcr.. The flre wa.i one of the most disas trous ever visiting the Island, and was a hard tight for the llremcn. who after the hard run found only n four-Inch main to pump water from.
