JJ^*riBMrKIKLI) Kailroad Stopped. ! Sequestration*.?On .Saturday Inst, the ' train of cars on the ilempfield Railroad j came down from Washington but did not ! jro back in the eveiling. It seems that j certain contractors, through a Mr. .Smith, of Pittsburg, upon a judgement against j Xhe road of twenty-one thousand dollars. S have sequestrated the property of the com- j puny. The design of the parties making , the sequestration, as will be understood j l?v the use of the word, is to hold the road until the profits have paid the demand for which it is taken. To this, the authorities of the road, as we are informed, refused to submit, and thus the matter stands in abeyance. There was considerable ex citement about the depot in consequence of the non-departure of the train at the usual time, and eager enquiries were insti tuted as to the cause. The passengers, mails, kc\. were conveyed to Washington in the evening by hacks. JG&*County Court.?The case of John Boyles, charged with stealing and carrying away and hiding again where ho couldn't lind 'em himself, a lot of clothing, was continued on Saturday, owing to the ab sence of an important witness. William Patridge, charged with sneak ing around and entering various private residence with the supposed intention of picking up some little things, was tried before a full court of his countrymen. It was proved that Patridge was a suspicious bird, whose roosting place is not known to the American people universally, but the court did not think the evidence sufficient to clip his wings, and he was, therefore, ?cquested to "go and fly low." Patridge bowed his thanks to the court, and re tired with a grace becoming the occasion. fcajTHoiiE Amusement?Wife beating is fast acquiring a popularity as a conjugal recreation. Here, as is alluded to else where by an intelligent cotemporary, scarcely a day passes but that some act of brutal violence is perpetrated upon his fractional part; by fellows who, in the scathing language of Sergeant Duzfuz, "have the form, and look like men." The alleged cause for these disgraceful per- ? formances. are in the generality of cases very trivial. The impatient lord of crea tion is disappointed perhaps in getting his meal at the precise moment he desires it; or has taken a drop too much, and his spouse indiscreetly notices the execss; or the monster with green eyes whispers that j somebody has done a "deed without a I name," but which unfits him to live in the j same hemisphere with the sensitive lius haud, and as a tirst step towards satisfac tion in all these cases, the unlucky wife "catches it," sometimes in the form of a battered nose, a variegated countenance, or a bruised breast; at other times she is affectionately admonished by kicks of her bounden duty to obey, as well as to love and honor the object she had taken for better and found so much worse. fi?2?-CiAVK Out.?On Saturday last, a poor old horse, so thin in flesh that he looked as if lie had scarcely strength enough to breathe, gave out in the middle ot Main street, and with an imploring look notified has driver that he could 110 longer haul the heavy sled to which he was hitched. The old fellow tried several times to go ahead when touched up by a whip lash, but at last laid down, gave up the ghost and took an easy flight to horse heaven. We were told that the animal was twenty-eight years old and though engaged in active service for some years, was afflicted with "some chronic" disease, tiie ravages of which he had uncomplain ingly resisted up to the time of his de fease. It-aT* The Hjlin and tub River.?On .Saturday morning a brisk rain commenced falling, and continued during the day, car rying off the snow from the earth and the housetops, and leaving slippery scabs of ice for the wicked and righteous to stand or fall upon. The steumbnamen com menced cleaning up their crafts, cutting away the ice and making preparations for h rise and a renewal of business. If the weather does not grow suddenly cold, we 'nay expect to sec the steamers putting out for pert? above a*?d below. fS^OlVB YOUR l>OOS WATBR.
