How many have been ashamed to admit tbemselres to be Adti-9!ivcry men, AboIUiouiais! Hour many that drank in the drop of .Liberty with their mother's milk, have, from an ignominious fear, been attempting to curry favoi* with the South,! These men are lit only to be cast out. and to bp trodden un der foot! They are salt without savor.? They have lost i'unctiou; in losing nihil hood. Do you suppose there could be pinned up in hell a more exquisite roll of infernal honor than that exhibited by those men?I think there were twelve hundred of them?who signed a petition asking the Legislature to permit Southern slaveholders to bring their slaves into this State, for fear they should not be thought to foe sound in favor of slavery?for fear they should lose custom and reputation? I do not know but what they will save their repu tation, but as to saving their souls, I urn afraid there is not much to save in that di rection! If there is, then there is a doc trine x>f inGmtessimals that is beyond any comprehension of mine. What dastards, what-contemptible tilings wearing the form of men, must they be, who, outvieing Ju dafi, xnake haste to Bell their principles aud their Master, without the pretense of any other temptation than that of saving u little pelf?-and that, too, -when they were rich enough to retire long ago! But it is comforting to think that there is some use in the worst of things! When thing.- have been corrupted, they are, at ar?v rate, good for manure: and let us hope that out of this .reeking tilth a more luxuriant harvest of virtue may spring up! I know these ra?-n. I have read their names. I have treasured them up. i have no feeling of revenge toward them.? But there may come a time when. I shall have something to say abvul them and Vj them. 1 shall never target that when I do speak under such circumstances, every word is to be a red hot cannon bull! I will have nothing to do with them. My soul, go not iuto their couucil! They are not merely cowards, but perjured cowards, every one o! them; and some of them arc apostates. They were educated to better thiugs, and have gone back to apostacy, uuder the paltriness and bribery of interest! There is one thing that men ought to understand, and that is, not only that in tegrity is safe in business, but that it is the only safety in bnsi'iess. A man that is jnfected in other respects besides his honesty, may not be safe merely because he is honest: but where a man has indus try, and sagacity, aud experience, if he has, added to these, moral principle, it will not only stand in the way of. but it will immeasurably increase both his safe ty and his profits. And the mau who, from coward ire. throws away moral prin ciple, iff not only a villain, but a fool. He cheats himself, as Judas did. who betray ed Christ for silver, aud got a halter.
