Although not disposed to fltvor or recommend Patent Medicines In general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects, I yet know or no suffi cient reason, why a man may not testify to the benfit , be believes himself to have received from any simple preparations, in the hope that he may thus contrib ute to the benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard to Hoofland's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for manv yea?** under the impression that they were .chiefly an alcoholic mixture. I am Indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Ksq., for the removal of this prejudice by proper teats and for encourage ment to try them, when suffering from great and long continued .debility.' The use of three bottles of these* Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident r el let, and restoration to a degree of bodily and mental vigor which I had not felt for six months before, and had almost de spaired of regulating. I therefore thank God and my friend foe directing me to the Use of them. J. NEWTON BROWN. Pltlladslphia, June 88,1861, IMPORTANT 10 SOLDIERS! PaiLADMLTOJA, Aug. 23d, 1803. Msssss.J0KK8 A Evam*?Well, gentlemen.yon Hoofland's German Bitters has saved my life. There is no mistake In this. It is vouched for by uumbers: of my comrades, some of whose names aro appended, and wlio were cognisant of Al} {he circumstances ofj my case.' I am, and have been for the last four years, a member of Sherman's celebrated bnttenr, and under the immediate command of Captain R^'B. Ayers. Through the exposure attendant upon my arduous duties, I was attacked iu November last with inflammation,' of the lungs, and was for seventy was then removed from the White House, and sent to this dty.on board the "Btntc of Maine,** from which I landed on the 28th of Jun . Since that time I hare been about a# low as any r one could be and 4t01 retain a spark of vitality. For a week or more I was scarcely able to swallow anything, and If I did force a morsel down. It tras Immenlately thrown up not even keep a glass of water on.my stomach. Life conld not last under such circum stances; and, accordingly,. the*physicians, who have boen working faithfully, though unsuccessfully, to reecue me from the grasp or the dread Archer, frank ly told'me they could do no more lb* me, and adv. id me to eee a clergyman, and to make such disposition of my limited funds as best *uitad me. I Without reflecting upon either the char acter Or clalma of the otb er gentlemen now before you for Congressional honors, I ask for Capt. Burden that consideration which bis claims so highly deserve. In my for mer article, I mentioned facts In tbe histo ry of West Virginia, daring tbe gathering of the storm which burst upon as and in-1 volved tbe nation in war, and referred to some of tbe eminent services Capt. Burdett performed during tbat time, r would not now refer to thai article were It not tbat the Hon. W. O. Brown, in an address pab lished subsequently, speaking in reference to that article uses tbe following language: "I could give other instances, but I only wanted to show bow easy it is for a preiu. diced tnind or hired scribblers to fall into errors." With all deferenoe to tbe honor able gentleman's position, I trust he will permit me without being personal, to state that my mind is not "prejudiced," nor am I a "hired scribbler," but a citizen exer cising my right to support tbat man for Congress whose isai, devotion and sacri fices so eminentiy??ntitle him to the confi dence of tbe people. When a gentleman who has been so highly honored as Mr. lirown has been by a generous constituen cy, he certainly must, in his own estima tion, lose most of his self-respect when be stoops so low as to apply opprobrious epi thets to any citizen wbo may in a respect ful manner eboose tojifler from him. I support Mr. Burden for Congress be cause I have been an eye witness to many of his sacrifices, botb for tbe 8tate and Nation, and because of my desire to see deserving men rewarded. I have already Bhown tbat when West Virginia was shaken 10 {^centre?when tbe stoateat hearts I quaked beneath the storm that spread its | dark folds over the eouotiy-^when Senators WhMt, terror ' strujkfen had fpeefcbtass?it was then tbat John 8. Burdeu returned from Richmond where treason held carnival and threw him self at once into the front ranks of those battling to stay the storm and drive back the black waves of treason. By bis elo quepco and his exampln be enoouraged tbe people to rally around the good old flsg of the Union?and tbey followed him with tbe true instinct of patriots. When at Rich mond, traitors threatened bim with assasi natioD, but they could not deter him from doing his duty to bis country or ta bis con sbouents. When he returned home and found tbe vampires sucking tbe life blood from tbe vitals of bis country, be gener ously offered himself a sacrifice; with tbe nobis impulse of his nature, be placed bi? bands on the altar of bis country and vow. ed before high Heaven that until armed treason was crushed and tbe traitors pun ished, he would serve bis country. Driven from his borne by fiends at midnight who sought his life because be was one of the recognized leaders of the Onion men of west Virginia, and because for bis noble stand at Richmond and at home, he had been styled by the Wheeling InliUigtncer, "Thb patriot Bubdbtt." None can now more fully appreciate his position then, than those gallant refugees wbo bavesince been drived from . their own mountain homes. He was a friend of tbe new State when some of the present high function aries declared it to be treason to advocate a resumption of the abdicated State Oov eroment, and through it to achieve sepa rate State organisation; but now tbat the new Bute is a fixed fact, we find those men who did tbe least asking for the high est honors. We cannot believe tbat tbe people aro so ungrateful, or ao unmindful of those wbo were friends when friends were few, as to permit a set of stay-*t-home politicians to occupy oil the places of honor while tbose .who have sacrificed most aro, eternally crowded to one side.? We trust ibat Mr. Burdett will receive tbe support of every friend of the Onion and thd new State. Mr. Brown sneers at tbe position of Com missary, and says bis nephew, George Brown, didn't get hurt while As was issu* ? '"8 rations. That is very easily explained. Mr; Brown is a Congressman, and, as a matter of course, bis nephew's duties wera so arraoged that be was never near euoagb' to hear the sound of a bullet or see the j smoke of a battle. When this: rebellion commenced, Capt. Burdeu was a stranger to me. X first met whii" wanderer from bis home ia May,-, 1801. The fortunea and accidents of war fro? '5?'to present, with tbe ex ceptions of a few months, oootiouaiiy plac ed me where I was witness to bis faithful devotion to Ms daties as a citisen and as a soldier, and I assert whatH know whep I ?ay that I have seen Capt. Burdett inTbe performance of hlsdnty-?"issuing rations" ?under tha most severe fire tbat waa ever witnessed in modern warfare; and I will here retharlc that it was very fortunate for Capt. Brown that' bis uncle was a Con gressman, for bad it not been so, possibly he would have been performing duty in tbe Army of tbePotomac where every ticularly during an engagement. . I hare not only seen Capt. Burdett so exposed onoe, but in every great battle 14 which the Army of the Potomac has been engag ed. His duty required bim to M where there was great dangefitdd be sbuuoed it pMied through the fi?ry ordeal of the series of battle# on tbe minsula, battle, and it must be borne iu mind that tbeae battles were of several days' duration sol certainly a Congressman would not wilb tbeae braro men to atarve and fight at the tame time. It ia indeed aorely taxing the honor of a representative in Congreaa wben he benda 10 low as to attempt to deprive a eoldier who baa performed bis duty ao well aod who baa aeted ao bravely aa Capt. Burdett his, of that honor which is ao dear to him. It may do to attack private character, but to attempt to sully the character of a mas wboae record aa a eoldier ia ao fair, ia a depth uk* low for ao honorable opponent to penetrate. If patriotism, a high aenae of honor, a con stant devotloo to duty, entitle a man to the consideration or bia fellow-citisena, theo Capt. Burdett certainly deserves al their handa a mark of respect. It was him tbpt furnished the first powder that loaded loyelguns in Virginia, and be carried that powder from bis home in Frantytowo to Uraftoa at midoight. When the people of Prantytowo were threatened by the bosh* whackers and is nightly expectation of having their bomee burned over the boada of their sleeping inmates, Capt. Bordett ?aobly went to Grafton and gave bis bond for one tbooaand dollars aa aeoority for titty stand of arma and amnn|tioa for tbs use of the citisena for home defense.? Those arms are yet in the handa of the people and the bonds now atand recorded ugainst the patriot who, io the boor o! trouble, knew nothiog but hie duty to bia neighbora aod hia country. For aaoh de votion to the interests of bia Stats and bia immediate neighbora he baa received no reward, and for one entire campaign, from the beginning of the war nntil February, 1802, be gave to the cauae of the Union bis conatant aervicea without one dollar of compenaatioo, nor did he atop bere; ao imbued wag be with tbe interests of West Virginia that to my certain knowledge be proffered, io Juns, 1851, tbe Quartermaster at Grafton for tbe Government, a loan of five thousand dollara, without intereat, on condition that the mooey abould be used to purohase stores, exclusively from the people of Virgiuia. Thia waa at a time wben none bat tbe moat devoted patriota could discern a glean of light riaiog above tbe dark horizen that was abrouding our country. Joho 8. Burdett was ths man for the hour. Be met the expectations ol bis fellow-citiseoe. They reposed confi dence in bim and he returned that confi dence as an honorable man aod a true patriot. Another storm is now gathering over tbe destinies of Weet Virginia. She with our common country ia recovering from the throes of rebellion and tbe beginning of the end, if treaaon ia at band. We all look forward with bopetul hearts for the esrly dawningof tbe bright bSams of peace, wben industry, commerce and agriculture will again return their rewards to the peo ple, but tbe day af the nation's glory will be the commencement of a new trouble in West Virginia. For fifty years tbe citixens of Western Virginia groaned beneath the oppression of the eastern portion of the State, aod when tbe war ia over tbe people of Weat Virginia will again be called upon through their representatives io Oongrass to preserve tbe very existence of tbeir State organisation. With aueb a man aa Oapt. Burdett representing Ibem in Coogreea, cool, eloquent, industrious and brave.com-. mandiog aa he doea tbe reapect of every public man in Virginia, be would be a tower of strength agaioat aoy attempt to atrike Weat Virginia, tbe youngeat but the brightest star from the glorious galaxy of tbe nation. People of Weat Virginia, Capt. Burdett has been true to yon in the hour of trial. He has aerved you with honor through acenes of carnage and bloodshed, aod we defy any man living to point to a single aot of hia life that will not Btand a strict investigation. Outspokeo aod maoly, be throttled treason in tbe dark corners of the State aod exposed ita bloody track to the light of day. Let us then elect the man or the people to Congress. Paarrox. The Two Oeclaratleaa. from the Cincinnati Qaaette. The American Declaration or Indepen dence appealed to tbe principles or the liberty and equal rights or mankind. This priuciple alone made the Declaration im mortal In the remebraoce or our people.? In our celebrations or our oatiooal birth- 11 day we read the Declaration aa the gospel of tbe day, not because we desire to keep alive the long array of charges against Great Britian, many or which arose upon incidents of tbe war, nor to perpetuate tbe hostile feeling, but because it declarea tbe great principle of univeraal liberty and equal rights. Contrast this with tbe "Declaration of Cauaea" for aeceasion, issued by South Carolina. One of tbe chief of tbeae ia declared to be ??ths election of a man to tbft bigb office or President of the United State, wboae opinions and purpoaea are hostile to Slavery." Tbia ia set forth among the principal cansea, but tbe world knowa it waa tbe sole cause. There waa no charge tbat this Preaident elect propoeed to interfere with tbe existence of slavery or the legal rights of tbe slaveboldera, nor aoy suppuMiioo that be could do it. The Confederate leaders have put on record the declaration that slave property was aa secure after Mr. Lincoln waa elected aa before. Bat ft la a declaration that the election of a man wboae opinions were hoatile to Slavery?that ia, wbo was not actively favorable to Slavery ?was a thing tbs Sontb conld not suffer'.' It abows the progreaa of our Government toward uegradation under pro Slavery rule. It ia bat a little while since pnblic men anywhere avowed oplniona favorable to Slavery. Southern statesmen were Only apologists for Slavery. Tbey pleaded the fact of ita exiatence and tbe Imposalbllity of getting rid of it at -once, bat they were aot defendera of Slavery. With few exceptlona they profesaed to deprecate it. The introduction of Slavery among us, was one of tbe iojuries charged afeaioet Great Britain is tha Declaration of Inde pendence aa Jefferson wrote it. Washing ton, the first President, was, in opinions and purpoaea boetile to Slavery. He de sired that measures should be inaugnrated by Virginia to abolish it. Jobb Adams, the aeoond President, waa, in opinions ah a parpoaes. boatlle to 8lavery. Jeffcraon, the third Preaident, was the father of the anti Slavery literature of tbe country, aod of tba meaaurea for excluding Slavery from free territory. All tbe great et?teame* <if tha country have been in opinion hostile to Slavery; and, of course, in purpose, for boneat men's parpoaes follow their 'opln iona. Yet we a*w- have it declared that, io modern times. Us people of this Eepatf-. iio have been permitted to e!ectforP?eri. deots only men wbo were in obihloia and pqrpeaee CavoraWw to' Slavery, aind (bat tha 8oath haa tolerated the popular" SfW tions only upon tbif condition. T~T?a??; ? ! <1 1 It 1* a declaration that we bats sot bad a government, and that black Slavery requires tbs political Slavery of lha white*. Who ii there among northern on of ao; emineace, who is not to opinion hostile to Slavery? There ii not it maa of any po litical prominence, except thoae wbo them ultei an notoriously bought and sold, who is an advocate of Slavery. This dec laration U, in effect, that Slavery is incom patible with a popular government, that the thirty millions of people aball not be allowed to elect a President exoept from among the three hundred tbonaaad slave holders or their northern serfa ; and that to secure and extend black Slavery, the whole people out jive op tbeir political rights in tfaa government. Freedom has in this country always panned & defensive policy. Slavery was always aggessive. Freedom was contin ually falling back to weaker defense*,' yielding snoceaaively its ground for the sake of pease. Bat it baa only aggrava ted the conflict, aa yielding to wrong al ways will It baa surrendered popular government until men holding the opin ions held by all the great men of the coun try and by every honest intelligent man in the Free States, and until recently by nearly all the intelligent class in tbe Sooth, have been ostracised from all rights in tbe Government; and the people are awaked to find that tbe Government baa only been allowed to exist on oondition of their subjection to the slave power. Since all this has come from tbe defensive policy, is it not time that freedom abould try tlie aggressive? Could that policy I make things any worse, or cause greater disturbance or destruction than the defen sive course has? We kavs tried tbe one, tnd onr present oondition is the result. The other is the only way now open to peace aud permanent tranquillity ' JtTTBITIOI, MILITIA OmCi jsggesesessti WW C. ?. jn.IS "K-J7*J*00, PREMIUM SEWING MACHINE. Cheapest and.
