lite |gnUl\i$mtt. Intemperate EATiNQ.?fttm aWare thai in the midst of the wild outcry against stimulants and narcotics, it will be consid ered a sort of blasphemy to hint that any evil can come of eating, since it is a solace so largely indulged in by many of the pro fessors of abstinence. I admit that tartle sausage and roast pig will not roase a man to knock down a policeman or stab his wife; but neither will much-abused tobac co, tor that matter. For influence, how ever, on the general condition, I am pre pared to holu that there i*s more of health and life destroyed by over eating than by stimulants and narcotics. Even in our own country one meets with too many members of the comfortable classes whcse constitu tions are palpubiy damaged by good liv ice, and the mark of the internal enemy is visible in the countenance of the whole German family. I remember once im parting a terrible shock to the nerves of a lady belonging to the exceedingly comfortable classes. She bad beeo denouncing that filthy and abominable practice of smoking, and boast e J that she bad just got the parent of a large family dismissed from bis employ ment because she had caught him indulg iug in a furtive pipe. I asked her if she had ever herself committed the act of eat ing turbot with lobbter sauce The impu tation was not to be denied, since the empty platter which had contained that attractive but pernicious mixture was just giving place to another laden with well-seasoned haunch; nor, to do her justice, did she d?;< m deeirous to evade aoy conclusions that might be dnwn from such an act; when 1 amazed her by sajing that, accord ing to my experience, she might indulge herself with a cigar or a pipe of latakia with much 1*90 prejudice to the digestive functions.?Jilackxoood1s Magazine Notice to Millers & Mill Owners.
