GREENWOOD'S ENTERPRISE. Greenwood Ginnery, OH Mill and Fertilizer Company Organized 1889. The buildings of the Greenwood Ginnery, Oil Mill and Fertilizer company are within the corporate limits of Ureenwood, H. C.. near the line of the C. & G. JR. It. witn which roud It is connectcd by a side track. Last Saturday, Dr. \V. B. Milwee, president and manager or this company, kindly accompanied us through;these splendid buildings and explained to us the workings 01 the various departments. We first entered tuc ginnery department where we saw a number niPhfindc luwv (Tinnincr ottH r?or>L*iticr nnt "'I""""" "" J "b bix 70-saw gius with salf-feeders aud aggregating a capacity of fio bales of cotlon per <lay, were managed by one inau. Three elevators for lining seed cotton were In use. We saw two Thomas direct-acting 30 inch cylinder steam presses. All this machinery Is contained m a three story brick building, tJ5x40 teet, with metal root well protdcted by steam tire extinguishers. We next weut into the engine house where we saw two GO horse boilers which receive water direct trem railroad tank. In the room containing electric plant were three englues ol 75,50 aud 5 horse power for electrical purposes which may all be used at one time or separately aud are so arranged that one man can superintend the whole thing. From the room containing the electric plant wc went into the oil mill which has a daily capacity of 550 gallous, averaging 41 gallons of oil and about 700 pounds oi meal to a ton of seed. Here we saw two 12-box presses, two 5>lncli heaters. Everything in this room, 40x50 feet two stories, is so arranged as to be easily supervised. From the press room we entered the meal and cake lOom, tiOx40 feet, and irom this room we weut into the lertiiizer department, 50x10 f<:et. The building containing the rooms last mentioned are also well supplied with steam tire extinguishers. The warehouse, 4oxlH) leet, lor storing cotton seed is a splendid building. After examiniug the diflerent departments of these mills we went into tiie small but convenient otlice where we lound the bookkeeper, Mr. Z. T. Cook, busy weighing cotton seed. &e. Just, to test tue mammoth scales, we asked this worthy gentleman, Mr. Cook, to weigh us ami to our surprise we balanced the scales at 11MJ4 pounds, which is within a fraction oi our actual weight. The president of this company informs us that satisfactory dividends have been declared. Dr. Millwee is one of the directors in the Bank of Greenwood, also director iu the Greenwood Cotton factory, and is always ioremost In any public enterprise pertaining to the upbuilding of his wide-awake town. .N. o. Pyles. TROY'S TABLE TALK. IteniH that were caught in the Breeze, and Put ill Type. Mr. L. O. Beauford of this place lost liis right hand last Friday morning In the gin. Dr. J. L. Pressley was sent for, as soon as he reacnea me spot, ue sum tne uaua wouia have to be taken off, we liope. Mr. Beauford will soon recover. Mack New a negro living on Mr. Bud Cresswells place near iiere has a child two years old that has hair growing in lis mouth under the teeth and on the inside of the jaw, it Is something to see it. The lecture given by Dr. G. P. Xeel of Greenwood last Friday night and hot supper given by the young ladies was quite a success, the proceeds was S-15, which will ho to buy a lamp for the pulpit in the P. church. Mrs. Mary Brown which returned home from the lecture Friday night was thrown from her buggy, and was badly hurt, sne was taken to Mr. J. L. Clinkels. Dr. L. N. Kennedy was called in to see the suffering woman. the wound may prove latai. There isayoung lady in tfcis vicinity says she would rather be ajyoung mans slave, than an old man's darling, she is right. Missee iMcCaslan and Wardlaw, of McCormick took in the hot supper Friday night. J. S. Burnett gets fresh tlsh every Saturday, give him a call. Some oue tied a rope across the street Tuesday night. Rev. J W. Sloan was the first one to find it out, can't the council stop such conduct. Our School Is nourishing under the supervision of Prol G. G. Parkinson assisted by mihh .Harmon. Miss Mollie Tittle will take charge of a school near Winter seat In Edgefield county. Mr. J. W. Lyon is suffering with KhuniatiRDO. There has been about 700 bales of cotton shipped from this place. Nick. (irernnooil Cotton Factory. Greenwood Cotton Factory, under the superintendence of Mr \V. L. Durst, is quite an advantage to the energetic and progressive town of Greenwood. This factory was recently built by a stoek company and is constructed of the best of brick and is located in the midst of a beautiful grove a short distance from the G. Js C., and the G. C. <& N. railroads. The superintendent reports business entirely satisfactory?plenty of well trained hands who are doing their full duty, orders, at lair prices for goods several months auead. Besides filling order* from distant towns, lie i 1a* already shipped a large amount of good!, to points in Laurens, Fdgefleld and Abbeville <L'ountiPS. Mr. Durst says he wi|l guarantee goods manufactured by the Greenwood Cotton Factory to be as good and as cheap as can be sold by anybody. The Greenwood factory consumes about four bales of cotton per day, making about 5,000 yards of splendid cloth. To give the reader a better idea of the Greenwood factory, we will give some facts about Its equipments. It is beautifully lighted by electricity produced by a two hundred light dynamo, driven by a twenty-five liorse-power engine which is separate from J.he engine that drives the factory machinery. Automatic tire extinguishers are equally , di?tributed every eight feet throughout the f building. There are besides this means oi extinguishing fire, outside hydrants and a large tire pump, also a regularly organized fire company. Fire insurances on this factory certainly ought to be cheap, gj A large ware house for storing cotton ha.' just been completed by the Greenwood cot ton factory. Mr. William Kedd, an experienced overseer, arrived here a day or so ago irom I'ied mout. Two of the overseers of the factory have just returned from the north bringing with them their brides. They tire refined anil accomplished ladies anil are welcomed b> Greenwood's hospitable people. We are glad to see a home enterprise s< well patronized and believe it is the sures way of building up one's own town or count ry. N. 0. Pyles. The cotton receipts at Greenwood, S. C. lsst Saturday were 178 bales. Good middle ing brought 8%, middling SJ^;, tinged 7%. Mr. Hennkmax, Jeweler,Greenwood, S. C. 1 Is receiving a large lot of new goods, goli watches and chains.
