Vicious Children.
Within a few months applications
have been made to us for information ;
concerning institutions suitable for
children of respectable Christian parents,
who are going wrong. .Sometimes
they are the children of pious!
widows, aguin of parents yet in the I
the prime ot life and of the best reputation.
In one instance the boy was
thirteen years of age; in another, the
way ward child was a girl of fourteen,
lire untruthful, others steal, and
kJUlilV w?v J ,
some are vicious in various unmentionable
ways. Of one boy, about seventeen,
it is said that be is disobedient,
impudent, steals all tne money ami
other valuables lie can lay his hands on
that belong to any member of the family,
and mocks at his mother's prayers
tind admonitions.
No greater calamity can befall parents
than to have their children become
thus corrupt. Some think that
such cases result from heredity, and
when they see children turn out ill
make sage remarks about its being in1
the blood, or in the bone, and perhaps
quote some statistics. Others say that
bad traiuing is the cause, and sagaciously
quote "Train upa child in way
he should go." The former do not un..l?w4

several elements. Many a child becomes
the first villain in a history of
many generations of honest, imlusirious,
truthful, ami kind people. Of
four children three may be models, the i
fourth in all evil continually. Oil the
other hand, some of the best persons
that ever lived were descended from i
criminals, and in a few cases from the
drunken and licentious.
Those who make ''Train up a child
in way he should go, aud when he is
old he will not depart from it," a universal
law, so as to condemn all perents
whose childred do ill, misunderstand
the nature of a proverb, which
states a general rule.
Neither the word of (iod nor nature
has put the absoiilte control of child
reu in me nanus or parents. iuese
children become, as their parents did
before them, independent factors.
Startiug with an organization and tendencies
common to the race, with some
increased, diminished, or distorted by
heredity, capable of being affected by
training or the want of it, for good or
ill, they speedily develop into free
agents, with power to counteract the
ettects of training, to resistor increase]
the distortions of heredity.
Moreover, from fifteen to twenty
years of age wild forces?the sources of

the best kind may seem useless, and
worse than Usele-w. The system is uubalanced,
almost deranged: passion
grows faster than reason, and will outruns

there and when the force of passion
subsides?if during the interval the
chains of habit have not been too
strongly riveted?the worst boy may |
equal his Christian father, and most
giddy and even a depraved girl, if not
self-abandoned and socially an outcast,
my become a good wife and mother.
The moral of the whole situation is ;
Do not expect your children to be good
merely because their parents and
grandparents were, nor to be bad because
some ancestor was not a saint.
Do not be utterly discouraged even if
your son mocks at your prayers and
admonitions. Should he become so
depraved as to need for his own sake,
and that of younger brothers and sisters,
and for the peace of the family, to i
be put into an institution, or sent to!

Sick people don't like to be stared at.
They are morbidly sensitive. To look
surprised at the change sickness has!

that, it is disheartning, and makes invalids
imagine their case .to be worse
