This journal for October, under the head of "Learn Your Business and Mind Your Business," dispenses sound advice to young farmers, which we im agine is quite us applicable in the Pal metto State as in " my Maryland." We quote a portion of the article, and beg its thoughtful perusal : " Tv "?fl Mmal," y ;> good moiton jr?ssr-r yr action, but very unsafe unless you are "sure you're right" The motto ol' a good farmer should bo therefore, first fcc.- /! your business and then mind it. .. Among ambitious young farmers, ami older one " who have, recently be gun to ?arni with more ol' zeal than knbwledgej&therfi is often great waste of energy and means tor want of sound judgment and discretion in the use of al I rite necessary help to productive farin 1 lng. These arc always advocates of high farming, and are diligent readers of ag ricultural journals and books, but too often, iinfo'rtitnately, bring discredit upon scientific farming by a .failure in the ' application of their knowledge. vTheir#need is that.sound judgment which duly appreciates all the means and ap pliances of improvement, together with tue skill fa, their use, which only results from experience. The farmer who is trained and educated for his work, and understands his business as he should, need have, little fear of spending too much motley' iii farming. He is em phatically the mah who can make high farming pay the highest rates'of interest. Unfortunately it is such men. generally, who are over cautious, and aft aid to trust themselves in liberal expenditures. What zealous young farmers should ever bear in mind, is that it is not ex pensive manuring alone, nor thorough cultivation alone, nor drainage, nor any other one or two things combined, that can ensure success, but knowledge of and thorough training fb their business, and then, enlightened, courageous and libe ral expenditure. Such expenditure would embrace all the process necessary to pro ductive cropping, and permanent i my provement of the land. This wc call .. high farming." It is. that sort of farm ing which has always been m.osr. produc tive of results in able hands, and will bel especially so in the future of Mary land and Southern State agriculture. If it fail, it will not be that" tho system is wrong, but because Gf want of skill in its application. " Let the young farmer know then, that, first, he must learn his business. He must study its theory, and he must b'j trained -in its practice. He must learn what modern science teaches of its principles ^ b?t he must not suppose '.hat that alone is agricultural education, ile must al.soma)c;eHliinisolf familiar with al! tho procc-'ses.^f thc art, by years ol' training, and-talcing hohl with his own hands. ' Tliis'is the price paid'foi]skill a lid s<Jnftd judgment in the prosecution ofiany valuable pursuit, and it is a price which will yield .large intercet wlumup f-lied to agriculture. Thu" iiiisfonune lias been that whereas this training is acknowledged to be necessary in every other branch of business, everybody thinks he can farm-without loaming."' Thc Maryland Farmer. ThU ia ap.r.-ther first class Agricultu ral monthly from Baltimore, uud i?> a credit to the nobb; old city from which ic emanates. It is published by S. SANES MILLS & Co., nt the extremely low price:' of $1.00 for twelve months-cheaper perhaps than any other paper, of equal merit, in the United States. Thc-con tcnts for October axe very entertaining, -rjust such reading as tho Fanner, the Horticulturist, the Florist, and the Housewife will read with pleasure and with profit. We commend this journal to our people. The Jfa<yltw(l Farmer, believes in deeVplgwing. thorough' cultivation, and: ' Manure. In'The last number it throws out the following hint in reference to the manure pilp : .? The manure pile has been humo rously styled lite -Farmers Bank, of De posit, and in truth norh'th^' tend- more to make farming profitable than care sp?nl in collecting and preserving ma nure. ?MiK'h of the best pf tue manure ..?n tho generality pf farms is suffered but too oft en to run io waste. Toalittle attention is also given to the making of compost heaps, yet when these are-prop erly made they.are capable ?f furnish ing an abundant supply of plant food for the growing crops. At odd times ?luring the Fall ol'the year it would certainly not b? difficult to collect a large amount of raw materials to be used in the compost heap. Rough fodder, die scrapings of ditches, the turf of ?ieadlands, marsh muck, woods mould, Sec., should be gotten together and formed into compost-with one-sixth-of barnyard manum, say two feet in thick ness, rhen a layer of raw material-and then a layer pf manure 18 inches in thickness, and following it another layer of compost, working thus in alternate lavers of manure and compost, gradu ally lessening tbe thickness of thc layer of manure until the heat) is completed. When ; ais has boen done, holes should be made in the heap from the. tojp down wards, into which tho black water of the barn-yard should be poured occa sionally until fermentation sets in. When i thc -heay) is well fermented, break it down, mix it well, and it will be ready j for carting out. , ?] Thc American Stock Journal. Three copies sent frrc. Address X. P. BOYER & Co., Parkes imrg. Chester,' Pa. From the Journal for October, we g?rf?cr the subjoined hints on the im portance bf cleanliness of Horse Stables an?! Poultry Houses, to which we invite 'attention-: "Stables that have not been used through the sumiller will most probably hav (income foul and emit*an unpleas-1 ant odor. This i< as repugnant to the I 'bruteas to tire bunnin, and equally un-4 healthy. Every species of filtii should be removed and the floors liberally sprinkled with either plaster ul Pariser quick lime, and the walls, troughs atid racks white-washed with lime. Old fashioned racks should be removed they have had Their day. It is u nita tu- j ral for a horse to roach above his hoad j to seek his food ; di?st is drawn into his eyes and nostrils, and hay seeds into his mane and fore-top. Troughs are the more natural receptacles for food-are more convenient and economical. Some i arrangement should be made by which ' a current of fresh air cnn pass through 1 the stables at all times. Light, too, is , very important to the health of animals. Stables should have glazed windows < sufficiently largo or Humorous to admit j Jbdi.t IJBPU^j) Joy ti? nmsjer jp ym\ hyf ' " .. z&s/esjiitja ' "wragges ess than'this would be injurious to thc :ye-sight and health of the stock. ' Give ?tock", in winter, the benefit of as much mnshine as possible-it is invigorating md healthful. Poultry houses should be looked after ; ?ee that the droppings are removed fre pn n?ly and the air kept pure by sprink ling plaster or lime on the floor. -The roosting poles should be white-washed with quick lime, or, what would be bet-. ter-wash with suds made of Cresylic Acid Soap; this will destroy thc ver min that so much annoy and injure them. All Poultry should be housed at night in cold weather- if you want to realize any profit from them. Turkeys that are housed at night during the cold weather in winter will lay' as many more eggs the next summer as those that ave half frozen to death, roosting out of doors" on 'fences or trees. The reason that poultry* object to roosting in a poul try house is, because it is filthy and over run with,vermin-they will risk their lives out of doors rather than sub: mit to this annoyance. A eloan house, and roosting'pfoles clear of vermin will satisfy them!" The Journal also gives the annexed recipes, which we doubt not are worthy of a trial : CURE FOR FOUNDERED HORSES. Take a lump of alum the size of a wal nut, powder it and dissolve in warm water. The horse must be drenched Avith this liquor and it will throw him into a profuse perspiration, and he will soon be aa well as ever: it should be as soon as you ascertain his condition. So cays an exchange. SCRATCHES IN HORSES.-Take white pine pitch rosin, beeswax and honey, one oz. each, fresh lard one half-pound, melt well together over a slow fire, stir till quite thick, so that the parts may not settle and separate. This also makes an excellent application for harness, galls, cuts, and sores of all kinds, on horses and cattle. WOK TO YOUR INTEREST !
