The Harp of a Thousand Strings. A Hard Shcei Baptist Sermon [This characteristic effusion, first appeared in a New Orleans paper. It is a waif worthy of pressrva*ion. The locality iasupk posed to^eat avillage on the ban of the' Mi ssi ssippi Ri ver, whi th er the volunteer parson, had brought :his flat boat for the purpose of trade.] I may say to you my brethring, that I am not an edicated man. an' I am not one of them as "be lieves that edication is necessary for a Gospel minister, for I believe the Lord edicates his preachers Jest as he wants'em tobe edicated; an' although I say it that oughtn't to say it, yet in the- State of Indinany, whar I live thar's no man as gets-bigger congregations nor what I gits. IThar may be some here to-day, my brethring, as don't know what persuasion I am uv. Well I must say to you'iny brethring, that I'm a Hard Shell Baptist. Thar's some folks as don't like the Hard Shell Baptists, but I'd rather have al hard, shell as no shell at all. You j see me here to-day, my brethring, dressed up in fine clothes: you' mont think I was proud, but I am not proud, my brethring' andi although Fve been a preacher of tho gospel for twenty years, an'f although I'm canting of the flat boat that lies at your lan ding, I'm | not proud, my brethring. I am not gwine to tell edzactly j whar my tex may be found : suffice to say, it's in the leds of the Bible, arid you'll find it. soinewhar be-' tween the first chapter of the book of Geneiation8, and the last cbaptor of the book of Revolutions,' and ef you'll go and search the Scriptures, . you'll not only find my tex tharj but a great many other tex es as will do you good to read, and my . tex, wliien you shall find it, you shill find to read thus : "And he played on a harp ov a thousand strings-sperits uv jest men made perfeek." My text, my brethring, leads me " to speak of sperits. Now, thar's \ ~a great many "kinds of sperits in the world-in the fuss place, thar's the sperits as some folks, call. ghosts and thar's the sperits uv turpentine, and thar's the sperits as some folks call liquor, an' I've g;ot as good, an artikel of them kind of sperits on my flatboat as ever was fotch down '?he Mississippi river; but thar's a great many other kinds of eperits for the tex says, "He played* on a harp uv a t-h-o-u-s- and string, sperits nv jest men made perfeck." Butril tell yo?>t1ie--4i?(i-^i3r sperits as is meant in the tex, is fire. That's ;the kind uv sperits as is meant in the tex, my brethr ing. Now that's a great many kinds of fire in the world. In the fuss place there's the common sort of fire you light your cigar or pipe ' with, and then thar's foxfire and camphire, fire before you're ready, and fire and fall back, and many other kinds uy fire, for the tex says. He played on the harp uv a t-h-o-u sand strings, sperits of jest men make perfeck." But I'll tell you the kind of fire - as is m?nt in the texA my brethring -it's hell fire i an that's" the, kind uv fire as a great many uv you'll come to, ef you don't do tetter'nor |; ' what you have been doin'-for "He played on a harp uv a t-h-o-u-san' strings, sperits uv jest men made perfeck." Now, the different sorts of fire in the world may be likened unto the different persuasions of Chris tains in the world. In the first place we have the Piscapalions, an, they are a high saihn' and high falutin' set, and they may be likened unto a turkey buzzard, that flies up into the air, and he goes up, and and up, till he looks no nigger than your finger nail, and the fust thing you know, he cums down, and down, and down, and is a fil lin' himself on the j carkiss of a dead hoss by the side ] of the road, and "He played on a i harp uv a t-h-o-u-?an d Btrings,sper- } itsny jest men made perfeck." And then thar's the Methodis, J and they may be likened unto the 1 squirril runnin' up into a tree, for ^ the Methodis beleeves in gwine on j from one degree of grace to ah-: j other, and finally on to perfection, I and the squirrel goes up and np J and up and up and he jumps fr<mi ^ . limb to limb, and branch to branch, j and the fust tiring you know he j falls, and down he cums kerfiumix ? and that's like the Methodis, for 1 they is allers fallen from grace, ah! J and "He played on a harp uv a j t-h-o-u-sand strings, sperits jest q men made perfeck." ? And then, my brethring, thar's ^ the Baptist, ah! and they have j been likened unto a possum on a i "simmon tree, and thunders may I rolland the earth may quake, but V that possum clings thar still, ah ! ^ and you may shake one foot loose, r and the other's thar, and you may ]\ shake all feet loose, Und. he laps I his tail around the limb, and clings Z and he clings furever, for "He ^ played on the harp uv a thousand strings, sperits uv jest men made lp perfeck" l\ In accordance with an Act ot the General Assembly, approved December 22,1891, I hereby pub lish the names of the Taxable Polls in the several School Dis tricts of Edgefield county, as re ported to me by tho Trustees of said districts : South Meriwether School Dis \ trict.-No. 18.
