At a recent meeting of the board
of directors of the Edgefield Build
ing and Loan association B. E.
Nicholson, Esq. was unanimously
elected vice pesident in lieu of Mr.
C. H. Fisher who resigned. This

Rev. William Montague Jouee,
of Willistou, will preach in our
Baptist church Sunday morning
next. Mr. Jones is looked upon as
being one of the most eloquent
young preachers of the Baptist
persuasion in South Carolina. He
came originally from tha mother
of preachers as well as presidents,
Virginia, and is a nephew of Dr.
A. P. Montague, the beloved pres

DRAGOONS REORGANIZED.
Those who formerly composed
tho cavalry company known as
the Edgefield Light. Dragoons met
in the office of B.E.Nicholson,Esq.,
on Saturday afternoon last and re
organized the company by elect
ing the following officers:

Davis, 1st Lieut. ; S. B. Nicholson,
2nd Lieut.; S. A. Holstein, 3rd
Lieut.; J.W.Reece, Orderly Sergt.
Thc members will have the com
pany reinstated at an early date
and it is their purpose to make it
one of the foremost cavalry com
panies in the state. It is well offi
c-ired-and we predict for it a very
bright future both in the military
and social world.
At tbe meeting on Saturday all

th<* annual picnic to be held at
Contre Spring on July 25th. A
more auspicious date could not
have been selected, being the day
after the senatorial campaign
meetiug at Edgefield. A full or

A DISASTROUS FIRE.

The imposing Tompkins build
ing, iho home of the S. C. C. I.,
is in ashes. The soot begrimed
chimneys staud as mute sentinels

lessly devoured by the flames.
The fire plarm was sounded about

building was doomed, so all hands
-a hundred or more-set about to
save Col.Bailey's property, the con
tents of the building. A great deal
was saved while much was destroy
ed. Three pianos were carried
safely out, two new ones were
burned. Inoce hour after the fire
began the building was in ashes.
The barn of Mr. James T. Bacon
was burned and his and Mr. James
E. Hart's home narrowly escaped
beiog burned.
The loss is estimated at nearly
$20,000, of which $12,000 was cov
ered by insuaruce. Mr.D.A.Tomp
kins had $8,000 on the building
and Col. F. N. K. Bailey had $3,
on his furniture, etc., and $1,000
on barn and stables, which were
burned.
