Death of a Sweet Little Babe.
On Friday, near the noon hour,
the precious infant son of Mr. aud
Mrs. J. Horde Allen, pasted into
the beyond.
Only a few hours' of warniDg
were given that the little life
would soon be ended. Just the
afternoon before the devoted
mother end father and littlejohn
Hiiosfrrd, were out together, and
the baby was being admired for
his beauty and health. ';But thou
hast all seasons for thine own, O
Death."
There are millions of these lit

around the throne of God, the
jewels of his love, "for their
angels do always behold the face
of my father which is in heaven.''
Many of these have gone iuto the
Glory laud fro.n scenes of want
and suffering and sorrow, when
.all could clearly see the wisdom
of their going, but this little one
was taken from the arms or loviug
and anxious parents, where every
thing promised necurity and hap

' If the Light Dragoons could
have seen D. P. Self, Ed Turner,
Bob Powell and the editor of The
Advertiser eat hash at the County
Home on the 4lh of July, they
would charge these. gentlemen
double price for their dinner at
the Centre Spring picnic. Now,
don't go and tall; this to Capt.

The members of the Juvenile
Missionary Society of the Metho

Canvassing for Furman University
Mr. R. C. Burts visited his
brother, Dr. C. E.-Burts, last
week. Mr. Burts is an honor gradu
ate of Furman University and.has
been engaged to canvass for that
institution this summer. Soon
after graduating, Mr. Burts was
elected superintendent of the
Graded School at Easley, S. C.,
and has been again chosen to fill
that position next session.
Wherever he is known Mr.R. C.
Burts is recognized as one of the
"coming" young men of the state.
High School for Johnston.
The Advertiser is pleased to
know that Johnston is taking
steps to establish a High School
undei the recent act of the legis
lature. There ought to be at least
two in the county. Why canuot
oue be established at Parksville?
By a consolidation of scLool dis
tricts it seems that one could be
easily established in the capital
of the West-side. Jt would be a
great boon for that portion of the
county. What say you, Parksville
trustees?
Mule and Cart Purchased.
The town council has purchased
a mule, cart and harness from Mr.
A. T. Covar for the sum of $140,
and hencefortn alJ hauling for
street improvement will be done
by the town's own leam. There
being considerable work need?d
on BooiP of the streets, it was de
cided after due consideration that
this ^ork could be done cheaper
and to better advantage by the
town owning a team. The inui<^
will- also be used to pu^ibe
chemical engine when fire-alarms
are given. y

Blind Man Threads a Needle;
County Home theru is ap old
colored man who is a very re
markable character in raaujr re
spects. He has been an inmate of
the Hom9 for more than thirty
yearB, and, notwithstanding\the
fact that ho is totally bliudAhe
makes himself useful in maW
ways. His chief duty is to draW
all of the water that'is consumed^
on the place by man and beast.
The most wonderful of this old
darkey's achievements, however,
is bis ability to toread a needle
and sew. He cuts his own hair,
shaves himself, threads the needle
and does his own patcbin'. That's
more than most men who have
two good eyes can do.
Feast Day at County Home.
Thursday, July 4th, was a day
of feasting at the County Home.
Steward Scurry killed the fatted
calf and a pig or two, which he
had barbecued to the king's taste.
After all of the inniates of the
home, nineteen in number, bad
been bountifully served with din
ner, a long table was arranged in.
the shade cf the trees, and the
finest barbecue dinner that ever
mortal tasted was spr?ad upou it.
Besides the highly seasoned meats
delightful cakes and pies were
provided in great abundance,
these being the handiwork of
Mrs. Scurry. After dinner a large
tin tub of ice cold lemonade was
on tap.
Steward Scurry can do more
than prepare a first-class barbecue
dinner. He has seventy-odd acres
i f as fine corn as can be found
auy nliore and the fa~m is well
supplied with stock, including
thirty seven hogs. Under his
management the affairs of the
County Home are conducted in a
businesslike manner. There is an
air of prosperity about the entire
place.

Su nday School Picnic at Ropers.
ID spite of the intense heat, a
large crowd gathered at Ropers on
Saturday last to enjoy a Sunday
school picnic. Appropriate speech
es were made by Hon. T. Garrett
Talbert, Mr. W. B. Cogburn, Mr.
John E. Swearingen and Mr. P. R.

had been provided in such great
variety and abundance added
much to the pleasure of the day.
Such occasions are thoroughly
enjoyed alike by the old and the

interest iu the Sunday school.

Under the operation of the new
Pure Food Laws, baking powdete
now generally bear on the label?,
a statement of the ingredients.':
This is of utmoi-t importance be-i
cause of the harmful ingredients
used in many cases. .
Royal Baking Powder is known
to be the only baking powder made-'
of Royal Grape Cream of Tartar,
and this no doubt explains its
greatly increased sale here.
Careful housekeepers are takiug
advantage of the protection which
the Laws afford, and are examin
ing all the reading matter on the
back of the label before adopting
any brand, for use in the home.
When in place of the wordB
Cream of Tartar the words "alum"

avoid baking powders containing
these substitutes.
