"I Can't Sing."
How many young and old make
this answer when urged to accept a
song book and join in the singing!
I know a gentleman who says he
could not recognize "Jesus Lover of
my soul" or 'Nearer my God to
thee" if he were to hear the tunes
without the words, ? so wholly un
able is he to distinguish one tune
from another. But you would never
know this from his attitude during
the church song service. He pro
cures a song book, turns to the
number and from all outward ap
pearance is singing. What he really
is doing is just reading the words
over and trying to get Ihe tune, al
though he says as far as he knows,
he has never succeeded in getting it.
You Avho "can't sing:" adopt this
method; it might turn out that you
will be more successful in catching
the tune than the gentleman above.
You may not be able to sing well
or even moderately well, but, at
least, you can say the words over.
Perhaps you are not.a Mrs. Rohrer,
but it would never do to give a hun
gry husband the excuse "I can't
cook" (if the cook leaves between
meals) when he returns from his
day's work. It would be safer to
have the stove hot and you be going
through the motion of cooking.

white. The menm was very tempt
ing and, in this the color scheme
was carried out. Mrs. Walker has
always proved herself a charming
hostess, and this occasion is anoth
er of the many delightful affairs
she has afforded guests and friends
this summer.
Rev. G. A. Wright, of Newberry,
and Mr. Sumter Wright, of Green
wood, are visiting at the home of
their father, Mr. Wm. Wright, who
is sick.
On Sunday morning at the Bap
tist church Dr. Dorset preached be
fore the looal lodge of Odd Fellows,
using as his text, Romans, 1-14,
"I am debtor both to the Greeks
and to the Barbarians, both to the
wise and unwise." The scripture
lesson was the parable of the good
Samaritan. The members of the
lodge entered the church in a body
wearing the robes of rank in office,
and occupied the front pews. There
were several visiting brethren from
Edgefield and the Ridge.
Dr. and Mrs. Horace Wright, of
Georgetown are spending awhile
here.
Mr. Ransom Padgett, of Edge
field, spent Sunday here at the home
of Mr. J. C. Lewis.
Mrs. John M. Wright gave a
large reception on Thursday in
compliment to Mrs. W. A. Kirby,
a charming young bride, who has
recently made her home. The arriv
ing guests were refreshed with fruit
nectar on the front veranda, and
from here passed into the hallway
which was a veritable bower
of green, with foliage and blooming
plants. The receiving party stood in
the parlor and with Mrs. Wright
were Mesdames W. A. Kirb\r, H.
S. Grant, and Misses Leila Living
ston and Lyl Parrish. Assisting
Mrs. Wright in receiving were Mes
dames C. F. Pechman, Peter E^es,
A. P. Lewis. M. L. Crouch and Miss
Emmie Wright. In the dining room
a salad course with ices, was served.
About 75 guests called during the
hours.
Mr. and Mrs. Blavers, of Ridge,
were guests of Mrs. Dink Lott, the
first of the week.
