FOOD AND DRINK ESSENTIALS
Divided Into Five Important Classes
Grain Feed and Water Are
The essential food and drink for
poultry may be divided into five
classes, as follows: First, grain food;
second, vegetable food ; third, meat
food; fourth, minerals in the form of
grit and shell; fifth, plenty of clean
water to drink.
It may be useful to keep this divi
sion in mind. It may be well also to
ask oneself whether he is giving his
flock all of the five classes of food and
drink. All of the five are of first im
portance. A flock can get along after
a fashion without one or two of the
five named, but not to very good ad
Tantage. The best, most economical
results will be secured by the use of
all of the five classes. The first and
fifth are the most important, doubt

CHICKENS DELIGHT IN SAND
Where Clean Boards or Trough Are
Not Available Arrange Conven
ient Box or Bed.
Chickens delight in having the mn
of a sand heap. If it seems imprac
ticable to always feed on clean boards,
or in feeding troughs, a sand box or
bed, made of 12-inch boards and filled
with sand, makes a clean place to feed.
The droppings are quickly absorbed,
and may be scraped off. The sand
itself I? an aid to digestion. Com
mercial grit will not altogether take
the place of gravel with chickens.
