Give Mexico a chance! That is a
fjentiment dove-.tailing admirably
with the lately promulgated theory
Give ourselves a chance! Give our
boys a chance. Give our widowed
wives, orphaned children and sad
dened homes a chance. Give peace a
-chance, that we may return to our
plows and harrows and look to the
years ahead. There is sentiment
deed that strikes dear to our hearts! I
.Why all this cry about an occa
sional border raid? Better to wipe
out the banditry of our Southwest
cities than to point our energies to
ward sporadic ventures across the
border. Every day there are murders
in our cities; each night there are
holdups and safe-blowings vastly
more shocking than the petty cattle
thievery along the Rio Grande. Yet
our press wreaks with shameful at
tempts to force our young men to
risk their lives, not in a holy cause,
but in a foreign guerilla warfare of
. Propaganda-what an agent to
poison the minds of a conscientious
people! A certain circle of bankers,
oil concerns, newspapers, politicians
-r-all with interests in Mexico-what
traitors to national morals! .
It is of interest that the conserva
tive press has not been hoodwinked
as yet into advocating war with our
sister republic to the South. It is of
passing note that Ambassador Fletch
er is still unconvinced of the neces
sity for intervention. It is worthy of
remark that the Presbyterian mis
sion in Mexico has never had a quiet
er year than the last 12 months. In
fact,! among those who are in posi
tion to judge authoritatively, there
seems to be a large disposition to
support Carranza aa against any
of a number of revolutionary aspi
rants to power.
Inside information leads to the
.conclusion that things are growing
steadily better in Mexico. For the
next few years-which, if we will let
them, can probably be made a period
of gradual settling-we should be
satisfied with preventive measures.
Let's be content for a while to
treat the Mexican situation with a
show of patience, courage and opti
mism, instead of rifles and hand
grenades. Perhaps our resistance to
the barrage of the propagandists will
eventually emerge triumphant.
