The American Red Cross, wishing to preserve accurate records of the work done by this organization ' du ring the war, recently requested each chapter to write a brief history of its activities. The original copy is to be kept on file at the n?tional headquarters in Washington; one copy at Division Headquarters and one copy kept on the chapter files. The history was to be prepared in accordance with this outline sent from headquarters: I. History of Chapter. II. Work done. III. Personnel. IV. Standing officers in the com munity, i The following letter was received byMiss Clisby in response to the re ception of the history which she com piled as secretary. My dear Miss Clisby: The Division Manager of the Southern Division has forwarded to this Bureau your chapter history. This document has been placed in the archives of the American Red Cross, and forms a permanent record of the achievements of your chapter during the war period. May I not take this occasion to sincerely thank you and your co-workers for your co-opera tion in preparing this document? Your chapter history, along with the thousands of others, forms a very valuable addition to the war records of the Red Cross. I am sure that these histories will reflect very inti mately the splendid spirit of self sacrifice and patriotic devotion which has characterized the chapters of the American Red Cross. Sincerely yours, COLVIN HERRLE, Director Bureau Archives, A. R. C. Through the initiative and earnest work of Miss Sarah Collett, the Edge field Chapter, A. R. C., was organized in the County Court House on Fri day, December 7, 1917, with Dr. Jo siah Morse, State Director of Red Cross Work, to direct the procedings. Seventy-five members were enrolled at this meeting. From December 7, 1917 to May 1, 1919, approximately twelve hundred members have been enrolled. As two chapters were per mitted in this county, the territory assigned Edgefield in which to organ ize branches and auxiliaries embrac es about three hundred and fifty square miles. ; The final report of the Extensio Committee in May 1918, showed thi a branch had been established in j Trenton and auxiliaries in the follow ing communities: Stevens Creek, Cle ora, Roper's Cross Roads, Colliers, Flat Rock, Antioch, Red Hill, Pleas ant Lane, Sweetwater, and Horn's I Creek. Two auxiliaries were organ ized among the negroes: The "Good Samaritan" in town and Science Hill in the country. Immediately after the chapter was organized, Ex-Governor John C. Sheppard generously gave five rooms on the second floor of an office build ing owned by him to be used rent free as long as needed. These rooms ?were fitted up by the chapter and are 'still in use.
