The Lesson of the Last Year's
Drought.
The following extract is from a
report by W. W. Daniels, professor
of agriculture in the University of
Wisconsin. which we find in the
Western Farmer:
"While there is no means of
preventing the recurrence of these
extremes of the climate, and per
haps no means of modifying their
effects that will be universal in its
application, there is a remedy.gen
eral in its nature, which is within
the reach of all farmers. It is the
adoption of a better system of
culture, better and deeper cultiva
ting, and better mantirin-.
The s+ratum of soil needs to be
deepened to be more thorotihly
pulverized, and to be made ricber.
Any means that may be adopted
that will accomplish these ends
will be of value as a remedy against
drought.
There is another means of pre
venting the evil effects of both
droughts and floods upon ali clay
lands or upon those having a clay
snbsoil, and which at the same
time increases the productiveness
of the soil so as to pay well for
its adoption It is under-draining.
The effect of under-draining is to
pulverize the soil by natural means
to nearly of onite the depth of the
drains and by this pulverization
the soil is enabled successfully to
withstand droughts so severe as to
ruin crops upon similar lands un.
drained, while the drains beneath
the surface form a ready means of
escape for the surplus water of
wet seasons. In the adoption of a
thorough system of under-drain
ing upon all heavy soil will be
found the more effectual remedy,
and the one most general in its
application against such extremes
as those of the past three seasons.
POTASH AS A FERTILIZER.-Pot
ash forms one of the most essen
tial constituents o. Jrtile soil, and
one of the most important of all
the fertilizing agents within reach
of the agriculturalist. In many
plants it constitutes more than one
half of their ash, and in most, at
least one-third. In neutralizing
acids in the soil and in the libera
tion of ammonia, it acts in the
same manner as lime; but when
it is desired to simply effect these
last mentioned objects the latter
should be used, as being cheaper;
and potash generally available in
the form ashes, should be applied
as a manure, using the word in its
strictest sense to indivate a sub
stance that contributes directly
to the building up of the structure,
of plants. But considera ble care
should be exercised in the use ofl
ashes, and they should never, as
is the practice of some in manur
ing corn in the hill, be mixed
with guano or the refuse of the
hen-roost, inasmuch as the first
rain that dissolves them will cause
~the potash to displace the am
monia in the same manner ti:at
lime displaces it from barn-yard
and simiiar manures, we have just
mentioned.
CEMENT TO REsIST XX'ATER.-A

quors is made of spirits of wine, I

each ;of glue and isi~nglass, and of
water- quant. .ft. Di;solve the
sandarac and mastic in the~ -pirit
and thei add the turpentine.
3Make some very strong glue,1
and add to it a good pinch of
isinglass. Heat the alcoholic var
nish until thle liquor begins to
boil, and then very slowly stir in
the warm glue. The amou nt of
the liquid glue to be added is de-I
termined by noting the point aLt
which after thorough mixture. a
magma is formed capable of beingr
easily strained through cloth.
W hen required for use the str ained
mixture is to be warmed. and ap
plied like ordinary glue to the
articles to be united. A. strongr
junction is cifected, which is not
destroyed by cold water,. andl only
after a comparatively consid er-'
ble time by hot water or ordcinamrv
saline solutions.
