TREtT iENT OF COLDS ANU
CROUP.
We believe in 'every one to hii
trade,' and in all cases of severe ill
ness or accident- call in one wLc
makes a business of studying th
human system and its disorders
Yet.many, especially in frontier set
tlements, find it impracticable, i
not impossible, to always obtain re
liable medical advice. We offer
few hints, that may be serviceable it
ordinary, slight troubles-Colds
taken in hand promptly, are easil:
remedied. If they are allowed t<
cling to one for a few days, thei
usualy 'run their course' of a cou
ple of weeks if not much longer
For slight cold accompanied witl
sore throat, a simple remedy oftei
effective, is a teaspoonful or mon
of powdered Chlorate of Potassa
in a tumbler of water-all that wil
dissolve. A teaspoonful of the so
lution is to be gargled in the throa
and swallowed-repeating it ever,
hour or so. A sudden severe cold ii
most often broken by a gentle physi
of Calcined Magnesia or Castor Oil
with warm foot bath, and avoiding
any chill or draft of air for a day o:
two. For filling up of the lung
and much gathering or coughing
we use a simple cough syrup, mad<
by mixing equal quanities of syruj
of Ipecac, Paregoric, and Casto:
Oil or Sweet Oil; shake well, an<
take from half to a full teaspoon
ful, according to age, three o:
mere times a day as needed. 2
warm sweat is good if great care b<
taken to have no chilly feeling for
few hours after. If one does no
cool off very gradually, more col<
will be. taken. (Jroup is, in som'
families, much dreaded. Its gut
tural cough is unmistakable afte
having once heard it. When firs
noticed we administer Syrup of Ipe
cac-10 drops to an infant, up ti
20 drops to a large child-ever
hour or so until vomiting is produ
ced& Then use the above coug]
syrup three times a day or more i
needed. If more than a slight at
tack the Syrup of Ipecac is accomn
panied with foot baths as warm a
can be- borne, with a tablespoonfu
of good mustard stirred into eac]
gallon of water. In addition, thi
chest and neck are well bathed wit]
Camphorated Oil or Volatile Lini
ment, and covered with flannel iine<
with thick cotton batting. It is we]
' ere croup is feared, to keep read'
for use a flannel cut to fit the ches
and neck, with tying'strings oI
the neck corners, and with thici
cotton batting stitched on to th<
under side. These remedies havy
proved effective in ordinary croup~
If at all severe and not yielding
immediately to the above simpl<
home treatment, a physician is call

CREOSO'rE FoR BRoNCHITIs AND CA
-ri.-When going from Switzer
land to Italy via Mont Cenis, some
years ago, the writer contracted
sudden severe cold, which, in th<
chill air of Turin, soon brought oi
a severe attack of Bronchitis. W<
hastened over to the genial. air o
Genoa, but it afforded little reliel
and the advice of Dr. Paccioci
Professor in the noted Italian Med
ical College there, was called in
He prescribed a very simple remedy
which was at once effective, as i
has been with many others to whon
we have since recommended it
Put into a pint or larger bottl<
about three gills of water, and adi
two drops of good Wood Creosote
Shake very thoroughly, take
mouthful, gargling it awhile in tha
throat, and swallow it. Repea
this frequently, so as to use up th<
mixture in the first 24 hours, alway
shaking well before taking. Afte
the first day, use t/tree drops o
Creosote and the same amount o
water during 24 hours, so long a
it is needed. The same mixtur,
has often proved very useful i
and swallowed. As Catarrh is an
infiammation of the nasal passages,
'ccompanied with a mucus deposit,
the creosote, which is largely car
bolic acid, would seem to be useful
iere just as dilute carbolic acid is
fective in cleansing any putrid
sores. Catarrh is the result of 1
wveakness, and is promoted by a
:old. A toning up of the system
and any simple remedy like the
ibove is effective, unless the Catarrh
s severe and of so long continuance
as to have permanently disorganiz
ed the nasal cavities. It is folly
to spend money for the much ad
vertised catarrh remedies, which
ire usually the sheerest medical
quaackery.-American Agriculturist.
The Germantown Tdegra p gives
the following sensible hints on the
sharpening of tools: Too often
these things are not thought of un
til the articles are wanted, when
much valuable time is lost in put
ting in order what might as well
have been done during the dull
winter days. It has been computed
that the same man can do as much
in two days with a sharp scythe as
in three days wi:h one comparative
iy dull, and the same expenditure
in force. And it is just the same
in regard to all other tools or im
plements, whether operated by
hand, steam or horse-power. The
engineer continually oils the ma
chinery, and a good saw or file is
oil to hand implements. We know
one who has a great deal of hand
hoeing to do by hired labor, and he
believes that the continued use of
the file on the hoes makes a dif
I ference of nearly one half in the
labor. His calculation is that every
ten cent file he buys saves him 810
in his laborers' bills. Now is the
time to look after the spades,
scythes, hoes, chisels, saws, etc. A
good grindstone and a set of files
I are among the best of farm invest
7ments, especially at this season.
The best of all forehandedness is
Sthat which prepares in advance a
full set of good and well-repaired
tools to work v:ith.
ISLEEPIG RooMs.--Do not neglect
ventilating your bedroom when the
Sweather becomes cold. In the
Lmorning hoist the windows, take
Soff the bedclothes, shake and stir
Sthe ticks, turn the upper one over
the foot rool. This will prevent
Ithe impure odors penetrating far
Sther, and they will escape faster
-while the bed is warm, and you will
Snot have to wait for the beds to air
twhen you are ready to make them.
In hot weather we sleep with all the
)windows open, but do not allow the
Swind to blow directly upon us. In
the coldest nights of winter we on
ly leave the doors open connecting
Fwith other rooms. On no account
sleep in tight rooms without at
least a crack to admit of pure air.
SPlenty of fresh air gives strength
Iand elasticity to the lungs and body.
1Keep the pores of the skin open, to
Slet impurities pass out freely, by
1washing the body once a week in
winter and oftener in summer.
IHave the room warm, bathe quick
1ly, and wipe dry, and you will not
.feel chilly if it has been done prop
erly. If all the clothing worn by
iday were aired while we sleep in
Sother garments, much health and
comfort would be added to life.
One third of our lives is spent in
sleeping rooms. Do be particlaur
Sabout them. Let them be large,
dry and pleasant.
LITTLE THINGS OF GREAT MO0
MENT.-It is a small matter to take
the horses across the field for their
-water ;it seems to cost nothing,
yet if a farmer's time or that of
his hired man, is worth anything,
it costs a great deal in the course
of a year. It is a small matter to
chop each day's wood upon the day
it is used, and thus have it all
fresh ; but fifteen minutes in har
vest time is worth more than in
-January ; besides, there are vastly
more economical methods of mnak
ing fire wood than with an axe. It
is a very little matter to tighten a
loose nut, but it sometimes costs
life and limb not to do it. A pear~
tree here, and a peach tree there,
cost so little that one is inclined
to think they are of no account,
but when the fruit is ripe they are
appreciated. A single step from
one room to another is 'only one
step,' but the thought of a stairway
made out of these steps during a
Sife tie, is enough to almost make
a wxoman's back ache. Look well;
rto the details, that the little things
Sare right, for it pays in the end.
