phis, adopted resolutions calling tho
attention of tho Stato Legislature to
tho good roads question and the im
portance of improving tho highways
in Tennessee. They recommend tho
passage of a law authorizing thc usc
of convicts in road building.
Tho Loxingtor. (Ky.) Loader says
that tho Blue Grass District is
awakening to tho necessity of good
roads. Superintendent of County
Hoads Spurr atatcB that bc will begin
to reconstruct several of thc most
prominent turnpikes around Lexing
ton ns soon as tho spring weather
will permit.
A good roads bill will bo submit
ted to thc Illinois Legislature this
month, which provides that thc gov
ernor shall appoint a good roads
commission which shall select seve
ral highways connecting tho import
ant citicH and towns of the State, to
bo improved at thc expenso of tho
State and of tho municipalities
through which thc roads pass. It is
further proposed to employ convict
labor to break thc atone to bc used
for road building material.
Mecklenburg county is recognized
as tho most prosperous and progres
sive county in North Carolina. It
has won this fair fame more by its
enterprise in building nnd maintain
ing good roads. Beaching out from
Charlotte in many directions arc
firm and clean roads, good in all
weathers and easily kept in repair.
The business of tho city has Leen
increased immensely by these roads
and tito value of farm lands for many

held on an issue ot $100,000 of bonds
for thc extension of Mecklenburg

to traverse roads in this country,
