Hon. B. lt. Tillman-Dear Sir: In tho

Juno 13, 1801), at 12 o'clock M., and will
bo glad to havo your statements ns to
these malters if you desire to bo heard.
Very truly yours,
W. P. STKVKNBON,
Chairman Investigating Committee.
Tito reply of tho Senior Sonator was
read as follows:
TitKNTON, S. C., May 20, 1800.
Hon. W. V, Stevenson, Choraw, S. C.
Dear Sir: I havo your letter of May 20th.
I hardly think it worth my while tu ap
pear before your comm ?tico to answer
Ibo trivial matters brought out in tho
NToal investigation. I do not seo in what
way Col. Neal's dereliction or misconduct
jr his transactions in regard to tho
bricks and bookcase, etc., can alfect mo.
I nm in tho dark as to tho exact naturo
>f ono of these matters, to-wit: "Tho
account on tho commissary book," and
tvould bo glad to know tho naturo of
that account, items and dates.
I will stato for your information that
[ havo no recollection whatever of ever
having obtained any groceries or any
thing else that could bo charged on a
book of that kind from tho ponitontiary,
jxcopt an occasional mess of vegetables,
which wove sent to mo by Col, Neal as a
SOinplimrnt, I suppose, and 1 am suro I
paid for anything else 1 got.
In regard to my running a farm with
convicts, 1 will stato that I never ran a
farm while in Columbia at all, in the
common sonso of tho tenn. I rented
live or six acres of land which 1 sowed
in oats in the fall with my carriego
horses and then sowed in peas after tho
oats woro cut for poa hay. Thoro was a
little patch at tho Kxccutivo mansion
that was similarly treated, and tho con
victs who kept tho yards and grounds
clean helped to gather in this hr.y as well
as that out on thc rented land tho last
year I was at tho mansion, and (Job Neal
would no vor take any pay. Thc labor of
curing and hauling iivo acres of oats
and poa hay ono yoar you can estimate
HO as to seo about tho extent of tho ac
count, if it is still opon. Tho matter
was so trivial I attached no importanco
to it thou or now. You may consider it
in a different light.
In regard to tho brick, I will say that
Col. Noni, at his own fuggostion, once
while at Hock Hill, offered to ship mo a
nar load of brick if I would pay tho
freight, saying that thoy would cost him
vory little, and ho would mako mo a pro
sont of them. I accoptod tho oiler, and
when Col. Lipscomb sent in a bill I sent
it to Col. Neal with a lotter inquiring
vvbothor Lipscomb had any rights in tho
matter. Ho replied no, that it was a
mistake, and thoro tho matter dropped.
Neal also presented mo with a plain pino
bookcase with glass doors, worth about
&5.00. I will say that shortly after I
entered tho Kxccutivo ofllco I lot Col.
Neal havo a cane mill and copper evapo
rator which cost ?700, leaving it to
him to determino tho price. Ho only
paid mo $100, and I thoroforo did not
feel that in accepting tho small gifts thal.
I did that it was an imposition on him.
I never dreamed that tho articles woro
not charged to his account and settled
for. Sinco 1 havo discovered that tho
State is tho losor, I, of oourso, am will
ing to pay for each and idl of those
things.
Thoro is ono other Item Ol which no
mention has yet boen mado that I havo
seen, though i have not followed tho
testimony closely. Ho shipped mo a
small lot of oats ono timo from some
where and would never ?end meany bill,
although 1 wrote for it twice.
! tunke these statements for your in
formation and satisfaction and leave it
lo your own discretion as to what use
you will make of them.
I am yours respectfully,
H. H. TILLMAN.
