A Pica for Factory Pooplo.
You may think wo factory pooplo
Are au unimportant lot,
And tho reason why Cod mado us
Was ho klndor just forgot;
And after Ilo'd oroatod us
Ho thought He'd lot us stay,
Aud soramblo 'round on earth awhile
To pass tho time away.
Woll, I know wo'ro unimportant
In ono sonso of tho word,
For to tho trump of oarthly fame
Our names aro soldom hoard;
: But many of us havo a heart
That's noblo, true and kind,
With a sunny disposition
Aud a gontlo, loving mind.
Wo'll divido with thoso in need
' If wo only havo a time;
Wo know tho bord will givo it back
To ?B sonio othor (limo.
Our treasures aro in heaven,
Not boro in gold or rank,
Wo'd rathor trust it tv. tho Lord
Than put it in a bank.
And thus it is while at our work
Wo card, wo spin, or weave,
Wo aro happy and contented,
And have but littlo timo to griovo,
Whilo thorattlo of tho spindle,
Tho Blubber or tho loom
Puts sorrow, caro or pain to dight,
Or dispels a cloud of gloom.
Wo all forgot our troubles
And our trials hero below,
As wo liston to our shuttles
Whilo thoy rattle to and fro.
Yos, WO watch tho busy .shuttle
As back and forth it speeds,
And with ploasuro watch tho cut marks
A' coming through tho reeds.
Oh! if f was a millionaire
Or financially so stout,
I could own tho whole of Huntsville
And tho country 'round about,
I couldn't thou bo Ratified
Unless 1 had to go
And sot my looms a-runniug
When I heard tho whistle blow.
Say, yon don't like factory people?
Woll, that's sinful, I declare,
If by chanco you get to heaven
Tb oro'll bo factory pooplo thcro.
Whon th oro you meet with us you know,
Ploaso don't olevato your nose,
Wo'll not liavo black oil on our hands
Nor cotton on our clothes.

A Comparison.
The situation in this part of the
South now is remarkably like that in
somo of the Now England ?States
sixty years ago, when thc founda
tions of great fortunes were laid by
the establishment of eotton manu
factures.
Money is being made herc, and it
is being made very fast. Tho large
stockholders in manufacturing enter
prises are in a fair way to make
handsome fortunes, and thc small
ones to acquire comfortable proper
ties from their investments.
The New England people made
dollars with their mills while our
people were making nothing or
gathering dimes by the siow pro
cesses of fanning or keeping small
atores or watching their land grade
ally increase in value. l>y the be
ginning of tho war they hid enor
mous amounts of money acquired
from dividends or profits on stock or
tho swift additions to thc value ol'
property in communities built by the
establishment of manufactures.
Tho present indications are that
twenty years hcr.ee the whole face
and condition of this Piedmont
country will ho changed. Unless
there is some back set, which cannot
now be foreseen, the "mill families"
of the South will bo as rich as the
"mill families" of New England were
and will diffuse and scatter their
wealth thickly. Thoro will he a
great number of people of smaller
means drawing comfortable incomes
from their holdings of mill stocks.
The mill population and workers
will bo tho predominant force and
the farms will ho chiefly used to feed
them and meet thc requirements of
all the classes who will have money
to spend-truck and stock farms,
grazing and grain lands will replace
tho monotony of cotton culture.
The mills aro not only making
eotton goods, but they arc making
more mill workers and better ones,
are educating tho people, not only
generally, but in special trades. The
mill masters and owners and direc
tor? of twenty years heneo are at
tho looms nod spindles now. We
may reasonably hope that the manu
factures will develop a very largo
and tremendously influential class of
working men and women who will
be thrifty and intelligent, who will
work with the definite purpose and
distinct hopo of educating and ele
vating their children and providing
competencies for their own old age.
AR manufactures increase - for tho
presence of tho cotton mills must
orcato a largo demand for home
made things of many othor kinds
and Stimulate tho tendency to mako
artiolcs for oxport-tho condition of
tho working pcoplo must improve.
I/ike everything else, labor is gov
crnedan Us pried by tho law of sup
ply and demand. As thc demand
for it becomes groator wages will in
oreaos and mare sud moro caro will
bc t?k'^? lo koop laborors comfovta
blo and opntontod.
Looking hwk at tho groat ohanges
tl at havo come to thin part ot tho
country in twenty years, aud espe
cially in tho last ton, wo aro im
pressed with the belief that we aro
at about tho middle of the journey
from tho old lifo and raothods and
purposes to tho now? that wo have
only now fairly startod on the rush
forward. Wo look to soo tho revo
lution praotioally completed in 20
yoars moro. That rovolution will
chango this Piedmont country from
a thinly to a very donsoly inhabited
ono ; from a country of peoplo in
modorate and poor oiroumBtancos to
ono inhabited chiefly by tho vory
wealthy and peoplo in moderato and
woll-to-do circumstances ; from a
country depending on agriculture
and crop yields to ono depending on
tho prosperity of manufactures with
farming oidy a secondary and sub
ordinate Rourco of wealth and busi
ness. So all tho signs indicate. Tho
best brains and monoy of tho section
aro going into manufacturing fastor
and fastor.-Greenville Nows.

Falling Stars.
Tho prediction of meteoric show
ors in Novembor wakes tho memo
ries of old peoplo to tho recollection
of liko phenomena in thc past. It is
agreed that there was a display in
18:53 that must havo beon grand,
and doubtless brought terror to many
who saw it. Many persons of mid
dle a/jo saw a lalor shower, but tboro
is difference of recollection about
tho year, 1866, 18G7 and 18G8 all be
ing named. It has ncvor been our
fortune to sec a display of the kind,
moro than a dozen or so of "shooting
stars" at a time, but wo remember
reports of the stars falling about '00
to 'G8, and it is our recollection that
there was something of tho kind for
two or throe years. It is probable
that Ibero was no display during any
of Ihcso years nearly equal to that
of '33.
Our first information of "falling
stars" carno from our mother, and it
was of thc sight she saw in 18.33 that
she told us. She was a little girl,
and had gone to tho spring with a
colored woman for water, about 4 or
? o'clock in tho morning-no unu
sual timo for farmers in those days
to stir-when sho saw what would
have terrified an older person. She
was not disturbed, however, suppos
ing that it was a way thc stars had
of going off in tho morning, and her
companion probably was not much
wiser than she. After returning to
tho house she was in no hurry about
tolling what she had seen, but later,
when it was daylight and thc stars
were not visible, she inquired if tho
stars ran away every morning as
they did that morning, and told her
parents that they "just ran away."
They laughed at her remark, but
gave il little attention, supposing it
was a childish fancy. They had not
noticed thc stars. They soon found,
however, thal tho strange behavior
of the stars was in everybody's
mouth.-Chester Lantern.
