Large and Respectable.
In Hannibal I Dunlin's earlier days,
at a certain caucus in Hampden, the
only attendants were himself and a
citizen of largo stature. Mr. Hamlin
had some resolutions to pass, which
began by representing that they were
presented to a 'Marge and respecta
ble" gathering of voters.
"Hold on," cried thc oilier man,
"we can't pass that, for it ain't, true.
It ain't a large and respectable cau
cus. There's only two of us."
"Von keep still, brother," com
manded the wily Hannibal ; "it's all
right, for you arc large and I am re
spectable. You just keep still."
So tho resolutions were passed,
without further demur, in the pres
ence of a "large and respectable"
gathering.- Brooklyn Standard-Lln

COTTON OUTKOOK.
The Crop Will Probably bc Short and thc
Prices Good.
The outlook for raw cotton is that
prices will bo high, ranging from 9
to 10 cents a pound. Thc visible
supply is very short, and there will
not, in all probability, bo a new crop j
much above 10,000,000 bales. The
Northern mills made a groat deal of j
money on 5| and 0 cents cotton in tho |
bale. But the rising prices have halted
their prosperity. Latest reports from
fall Uiver indicate that thc manu
facturers arc f-tee to face with an ob
literation of profits. Already there
is talk of reducing operatives' wages.
- Augusta Chronicle.
MAY <;<> TO TI?N (KN TS.
It is pretty certain that colton
farmers aro going to get a good
pri?e for their cotton next, fall. No
doubt thc crop will recover from
much of the damage it suffered from
tim wet weather of last month, but
it will not bo as largo, as it was ex
pected it would be on account of thc
increase in tho acreage. Tho world's
supply of cotton is much smaller
now than it, usually is at this season
of thc year. It, \* stated to bo only
a little more than 1,000,000 bulos.
As a rilli', in midsummer, it is twice
that amount. Tho supply on band
being short, and tho outlook of a big
crop not being tho host, it would not
bo surprising if tho price of colton
at the opening of tho now o itton
season should bo somewhere near 10
cen ta.--Savannah Nows.

A tank car containing 0,000 gal

by the fire igniting with tho gass

Tho larger portion of thc car was

New Money.
There has been a marked improve
ment in the quality and design of
our paper money during thc past

The new $5 silver certificates, the

day, are excellent specimens of tho
engraver's arl, and ?ire printed on thc
bes! quality of paper. This certifi

i'm nil silver certificates of avoiding
too much filigree and leaving a good
amount of open space. The Indian's

remarkable line piece ol work.
Several (lesions for tin.' new $10 sil
ver eortiliicate have been submitted,
but none has yet boen adopted. Tho
central figure will bo illustrative of
the navy, lt was at first proposed
that the picture of a battleship should
be used, but it has been determined
timi the vignette of a human face
would give belter security against

artificial work. lt is, therefore,
probable that tho face of some naval
hero will appear on the new $10 sil
ver cortidente, most likely the faco
of a dead hero. -Atlanta Journal.
