COLUMBIA, S. C., July 23.-Another
week ol' the campaigning has passed
and .still there is no appai'lllit chango in
tho standing of tho various gubernato
rial candidates, beyond tho fact that
Patterson is losing ground. This fact
has been so potent thc pas; week that ho
is no longer tri von serious consideration
by tho leaders, Cary, Hoyt and Mcswee
ney. Of course, there is nil o. casional
Hurry, but generally speaking tho cam
paign is a monotonous grind. The
friends of Cary. Mcsweeney and Hoyt
seem to bo conlidont of success, w hile
tho knowing ones will not attempt to
name tho winner.

negroes charged with assaulting a young
lady in Florence, woro safely placed in
