COLD.
On Monday morning last, the ther?

twenty degrees. Ice was abundant, and
the passage of vehicles over tho frozen
bosom of mother earth, called to mind

MASONIC.
Wc arc pleased to notice that at the
recent election of the Grand Royal
Arch Chapter of Masons, of this State,
held at Charleston, our fellow citizen,
Montgomery Moses, Esq., was elected
M. E. Grand High Priest-the presi?
ding officer of thc Chapter. Our es
teemed friend, J. A. HOYT, Esq., odi
tor of the Anderson Intelligencer, was
elevated to tho position of Grand King,
and Capt. E. W. Lloyd, of Florence, S.
C., to that of Grand Scribe.
PERSONAL.
We were much pleased, a few days
since, to receive a call from Col. C. 0.
PORTER, while making a hasty (too
hasty) visit to Sumter. Col. PORTER is
a gentlemnn of large heart and noble
bearing-a type of the Old Virginia
gentleman. He is, too, a man of oapital.
We shall always wcloomo such men,
cordially, to our midst.
Wc were also gratified by a call from Mr.
UPSHCR JOHNSTON, of the cotton facto?
rage and commission house of MERCER
& JOHNSTON, of Baltimore. This ex
collent house baa boen represented at
Sumter, for somo time past, by Mr.
Tuos. T. UPSHUR, Jr., a young gentle
wan of high bearing, who has already
won much of the good opinion of our
eitisooi.
KN?lrfR HOU8B, TOWN
HALL, At.
We have wea, io the hands of Mr. W.
H. G i BARDIA u, the worthy President
of the Sumter Fire Eugine Company, a
drawing of the proposed new Town
Building, which ie to serve the parp?se
of Market House, Town Hall.and Couti
eil Chamber, Fire Eugine ' House aod
Hall, besides embracing two large
stores, one hundred 'feet long.
We lesrn that stock has been readily
subscribed to amount sufficient to erect
this building, and that it bat remainsjto
proeure from.our Town Council the use
of the lot on which to put it, for the
desired length of time.
We here but little doubt this ar range?
ment CAO be effected. By all means let
us hare the building. It must prove a
decided addition to our Town, and the
stock invested cannot but be profitable.
In this movement, much oredit is due
to the energy of Mr. A. W. Su DER. Let
us soon hear the ring of the trowel upon
its rising wall?.
?BItirBltANCB.
Quite a large number of our good peo?
ple, male and female, assembled at the
Methodist Church, in this place, on
Wednesday evening last, io the inter?
est of the cause of Temperance. Ad?
dresses appropriate, and full of feeling
and profit, were made by Revs. H. M.
MOOD and N. GRAHAM, after which the
following organization ot a ?Society waa
effected :
President-H. W. GARDNER,
Viet President-J. H DlNULE,
Cor. Secretary-Rev. H. M. MOOD.
Secretary-J. P. BOONE.
Much interest, we are pleased to say,
was manifested throughout the proceed?
ings, and a considerable number of our
most respectable citizens eurolled them?
selves as members, inoluding several of |
the fair daughters of Sumter.
The Society will meet at the Baptist
Church, thia (Wednesday) evening. A
cordial invitation to attend is extended
to our citizens generally and to the la?
dies especially.
SOW H BB N LIFE INSURANCE CO.
We have been pleased to receive a
call from Mr. C. L. YATES, of Charles?
ton, who is special Agent for the Atlan?
ta Department of tho Southern Life
Insurance Company, of which Mr. A.
Wny K, of this place, is local Agent.
This Company, despite tho assuults
from unfriendly Northern sources, has
continued to move on in its career of |
almost unexampled prosperity, justly
becoming one of the most popular of the
Southcrr Companies. Its assets are
now put down at over $700,000, and
over six hundred lives were insured
during the month of December last.
We take great pleasure io recom?
mending Mr. YATES to the courtes}*
and confidence of the peuple of this
portion of the State, and tho Company
he represents to their continued and
increased favor and investment. He
proposes to spend some weeks iu this
and the adjoining couuties.
)fc?r A lusty three-cornered fight, be?
tween three of thc feminine gender,
of African extraction, occurred a few
days ago, on thc public square, ('routing
the t.ourt House. Attt vincere aut mort
seemed tobe thc insignia of battle, and
yet it was hard to mark the opposio
parties-they all seemed to be enemies,
and some ungenerous by-stauder rudely
suggested that the casus belli was a man.
Horrid suspicion I three women "pullin'
wool" about one mun ! But now they
"let slip the dogs ol'war." No. 1 knocks
down No. 2-No. 8 downs No. 1-No.
'? rises gallantly frojn terra firma,
and with one "tell swoop" brings No.
3 to a horizontal position-Now No.
1, recovering from "the full," rallies
.?punky to the contest, flings a --broad?
side" into No. 2, who again bites thc
dust. And now thc three "come to?
gether." My countrymen-wliut a sub?
ject for an apotheosis! Meanwhile, wurdi
in modesty not steeped, fall upon tlx
ear. But sec I Their "liege lord"
comes! With brawny arin and heart of |
steel, he braves the batt lo fierce ! And
now dont the "culikcr" fly ! Till thc
man with tho ?'ar on his shoulder comes.
And uow they hearken the voice of their
leador : "Let us have peace."

Crnwfordville, O a., Ootobor 27. 1860.
Messrs. Wilcox, Oibbs A Co. :
I hare not replied earlier to your Inquiry as to
r< latir? merits of tho fertilisers used in this vl
einity, from the fact that the crops of cotton were
not sufficiently matured to enable me to form an
accurate opinion. Wo were then in the midst of j
a drouth without parallel for duration ?nd se?
verity in the memory of Ibo oldest inhabitant.
Not a rain from first of May till last or August,
and the result of my observation is, I know ot
none whiob excelled your Manipulated in enpn
oity to enaure long and ?overo drouths. I usod
the Manipulatod on very thin gray suil, with
stiff clay substratum, at tho rate of 260 lbs. per
sore, and shall make about COO lbs. seed cotton to
tho acre. 1 left a small spuco uninanurod, which
will not mako more than 160 lbs. per acre. I
have had no rust even, on ground predisposed to
it. I. therefore, conclude, in viow of these faots,
th .nt your Manipulated is at least equal, If not
suporior, to any fertilizer used in this region-and
there wore a number of varieties used, too, nt
that. Respectfully, JAMES F. RMI).

Indigestion not only affects the physical health
but the dispositions and tempers of its victims.
The dyepeptio becomes, too, in a measure de?
moralised by bis sufferings. Ile is subject to
fits of irritation, sullenness or despair, as the
case may be. A preternatural sensitiveness
which be cannot control, leads bim to miscon?
strue- tho words ond acts of those around bim,
and bis intercourse oven with those nearest and
dearest to him is not unfrcquently marked by
exhibitions of testiness foreign to bis real nnturo.
These are tho mental phenomena of the disease,
for which the invalid cannot bo justly held re?
sponsible, but they occasion much household dis
oomfort. It is to the interest of the home, cir?
cle, it is essential to family harmony as woll ns
to the rescue of the prinoipal sufferer from a
state not far romoved from inoiplent insanity,
that these symptoms of montai disturbance be
promptly removed. This can only be dono by
removing their physical cause, a derangement of
the functions of tho stomach and its allied vis?
