FIREMEN'S AK M VERSAS Y.
According to announcement. the An
! Diversa* of ibo Sautter Fire Engine
j Company was celebrated on Thursday
I last, willi parade and ex reine in the
afternoon, and electiuii of officers and
banquet in the evening.
The parade was one of the finest dis?
plays that Sue Company has ever made,
and the practice highly gratifying and
satisfactory. Through four hundred
feet ot hore, a splendid stream was
throw?, showing that the ..Eagle," from
the .Main cross .streets, could comtLand
a fire on two side? of either of the four
central squares, immediately adjacent,
embracing well nigh the whole business
Front ot the. town, whilst from other
public wells she could sweep the other
sides of these squares, or reach far be?
yond their limits in opposite directions,
We congratulate our community upon
the existence of so efficieut a Fire Com?
pany in our midst.
The result of the election for officers
will be found elsewhere, from which it
will be seen that Capt E C. GREEN
succeeded W. H GlRARDEAU. Esq , and
was returned to the Presidency ot the
Company.
The banquet, spicad at FURSTEN
Bt'RG's Hall, was a handsome affair io
all its concomitants, reflecting credit
upon the Committee of arrangements,
and npon Mr. K. h. CHRISTMAS, by
whom it was provided
The bill of lare. and i's manipulation,

from what we saw and did, there was no
want of appreciation on the part ot the

quick and continuous, the mu>ic. mean?
while, .seeming to lend inspiration and
vigor to the ..action." And we dont
know whether?.O'd Abe's declaration

applied. As far as we know, all hands
reported for duty next morning, though
some were a little late.

In the absence ol Mr. L B. G AY,
E W. MOISE. Esq., was loudly called

in a style of wit and pun that kept the

that their sex received aught but com?

Ol' the responses, all-barring, ot

we want to say farther that they richly

The personal ii tends 0f tee departed
mao of God whose name appears in the
caption above, have recently placed over
the spot, where repose his sacred rasai na,
at Mt. Zion Church, Salem, a token, io
marble, of the love and esteem cherished
for him while living and of their venera?
tion for his memory, now that he ia
dead. It consists of a hcod?on>ely
wrought ?lab, the work OJ sri ih ip of the
Sumter Marble Yard, semi circular at
top, rising from appropriately extended j
base The semi-circle presents an "open
Bible," with the quotation from the
inspired Book : "Thy word is troth."
Theu dowu the side of the slab, imme?
diately below the Bible, follows this
epitaph, written by bis surviving friend
and brother Presbyter, Rev. DONALD
MCQUEEN :
IN MEMORY OV
REV THOS. REES*. ENGLISH, A. M.

DIED 11th APRIL. 1869.
"As a preacher, zealous, instructive
and olteo eloquent. As a Presbyter,
independent in opinion and wise in
counsel. As a friend, ardent and sincere.
His chosen field was among feeble
churches and in destitute regions. For
more than a generation, his labors
abounded in Harmony Presbytery, and
his name and work will be long re?
membered by multitudes.
Here lew a reliant soldier Hes
A soldier of the Cross.

While slumbers here the dross."
It affords us melancholy pleasure to
participate io this act ol comm?mora

the marble tells of his virtues and bis
worth, and where sleeps his* dust, the
recollection of him is written even more

OFFICE SCHOOL COMMISSIONER, )
SUMTER. Jan. Ki, 1870, f
Mr Editor:-While I must admit
that t e article in your last issue, under
thc heading, -'Why don't the teachers
get their pay," told some plain truths, in
.roed homespun style; and ff hile I would
not lighten one jot or tittie the burden
laid upon those by whose carelessness, or
worse, the teachers of this State and
0- utity have been so unfairly d*alt with,
yet I cannot allow any animadversion
upon the couduct of the State Superin
tendent, thc Hon. J K. Jillson, to
pass unnoticed.
I speak for myself and brother Com
missioners of the old Board, (consisting
as it did of members of both political
parties.) when I assert that we have al?
ways found him the unwavering friend
of the Teachers and of the cause of
education-a clear headed business man,
of ??ulular integrity and impartiality,
and au ornament to the responsible post
he fills.
I ; would not be with his consent that
a teacher would lose any part, however
small, of hi* hard earnings, and if any
scheme is on (bot for the melting up
of the school claims, the teachers may
be sure the matter is as carefully hid
from Mr. Jilison as from them. Allow
me, Mr. Editor, just so much of your
space as will place on record my appro
ral of the whole official course of the
State Superintendent of Education, and
my protest againstanv eeoeure beiug eaat
ou him.
Respectfully,

Spread tba Truth.
Some medical mei. insist that it is undignified
to advertise a remedy, however valuable it may
be. Queer reasoning ibis. It ia like saying that
an article wbicb the world awefe abould be hid in
a comer-that benefita and blessings may be too
widely diffused-tbst tbe means of protee'ing and
restoring health should be a close monopoly, and
not accessible to all. The argument ia bad. It
is worse than that; it is inhuman. Suppose
llostettr's 8tomaeh Bitters-an absolute specific
for dyspepsia, billioosneaa and nervous del ility
-had never been known beyond the repertoire
of tbe faculty, what would have been the eon s??
quence ? Instead of earing and invigoisting
millions, the jood effects of the preparation
weald have been confined to a comparative few.
Thors ia tbs highest authority for saying that
light should uot be hid andar a basbel; that
whatever ia excellent should be placed as a eity
on a hill, where nil meo ean take eoguisaaee of j
it. It is upon this principle that the Bitters
have been advertised in every newspaper of any
prominer.ee in the western hemisphere, and that
tbe spontaneous testimonial! in ?ts favor have
been translated into all written languages.
Thousands enjoy perfect health to-day who
would be languishing oe heda of sickness if tho
newspapers bad not spread the truth with regard |
to this unequaled invigorant and corrective far
and wide. Sapporo profit bas been reaped from
thia publicity. Ia that any argument against
