The Centennial and the Month
All men know by this time that the
^oiirtiH^of July. 1S7G, is to be celebra
ted by a pageant as grand as was ercr
conceived. Thd arrangements for the
celebration of this the One Hundredth
Anniversary-of Amcricau Ipdependcnce
are already thoroughly organised and
aro upon an immcusc scale. The cele
bration will be held at Philadelphia,
and there is no daubt that the whole
tfortk will euter iuto the spirit of the
ft i OJit* ? ' . ,
occasion with an enthusiasm that will
count no cost nor spare nny pains. Will
the South participated 1
A late number of the Philaldelphin
?vaiwy Bulletin comes to ns with a ?*ull
account of the meeting of agents of the
Philadelphia World' Exposition of1S7G
at, Memphis Tenne^ee. The Com
missioners to represent Tennesee in be
half of the scheme met in the city
named, aud an association was formed
embracing some of the leading men of
the State.
We subjoin extracts from the ad
dress of Col. Win. II. Stephens which
wilj evince the modus operandi% and the
spirit that should animate the eutirc
South.
REMARKS OJP COL. WM. H STEPHENS.
Colonel Win. H. Stephens said con
versationally that, as a member of the
Centennial Board of Finance, it is nut
impvqpcr for mc to speak a few words at
this., your first meeting iu We-st Ten
ncssee. By an net of Congress, npprnv
ed p? the third day of March, 1871,
provisiun was made for the due eclebrn
lion at l'hiludelphi.-i of the one hund
redth nopiversary of the American
Jndj)ppudcaso in the year 137ti. with
appropriate ceremonies, and by tljc djs
rUy~??w? Tsuiloimt resources aud our
profess in tho useful arts,, on. a scale
which should attract the attention of
tho civilized world. Under this aet one
commissioner and one alternate com
missioner were appointed from euch
State aud Territory to promote and eon
trol tho exhibition. For Tennessee, the
Commissioner is Ttaptnee H. Coldwell.
of HhelbyT?le, and the AJtirunts is
William F. Proaser, Nashville, buth of
whom- Tiave brought to tho discharge of
their duties much ability und the most
commendable zeal. On the first of .Juno,
1872, un act of Congress was passed
creating a corporation with u capital of
ten million dollars, to bu known as tho
Centennial Hoard of Finance, composed
ef citizens of all iho States und Terri
tories.
13ut, gentlemen, there arc other mo
tives for <>Mt participation in this great
industrial exposition. Its ieflueaec in
re-establishing cordial relations among
those who havo heretofore been aliena
ted from each otber cannot be too highly
estimated. Since, to all human views
it seems to bo the will of Providence
that we are to remain unit.; 1 in govern
ment, to obey the same laws, to speak
one language, to livo under the same
roef and to worship at the same altars,
it is obviously the part of true wisdom
bo daVell together in unity, nnd to pro
Biota a ft-ii'it of concoid throughout the
wide extent of one country. In the
celebration of the "year of j ubilee," ami
in tho flow ef good fueling to result from
it, we can soo a way of escape fron?
thoso social und political troubles and
complications which havo utterly con
founded the schemes, of the parly politi
cians. and have perplexed oven tho wTs
dona of the sfcitesme-n. Compulsory
legislation may en/opco-obedieuco rf t he
law, but it oantiot heal the wounded
spirit, nor rekindle fires "of patriotism.
It is for the people themselves to re
establish their ancieut friendships, and
to obliterate the memory of post ani
mosities. Can you couoeive of nn
occasion more likely to inaugurate such a
friendly spirit than the assembling of a
nation to eclebrato the hundredth anni
versary of its birth, around tho hall in
which Independence was first proclaim
ed, where John Adams, of MaJnohtuetts,
held counsel with Thomas JefForson, of
Virgins; whero Charles t Carroll, of
Maryland, struek hands with Hoger
Sherman, of Connecticut; where Henja
min Franklin, of Pennsylvania, sat sido
by sido with Kichard Henry Lee, of
'?Virginia; where- John Hancock stood
shoulder to shoulder with ?HdjJIcton and
Butlcdge, and where t*oy all "p edge
to each other, their lives, their fortunes,
and their sacred honors." Only let the
people meet now in the samo spir t that
guided their fathers a century ugo, cast
ing behind them ?II thoughts of the
past, und soiling their high hopes upou
a glorious future, and as surely as 'One
touch of nature makes tho whole world
kin, so surely shall t.io bitterness of tho
p ;st he washed out iu the charity of mu
tual forgiveness.
Gentlemen, you ore coiworkors with
many of r the wisest, t tie most practica,),
tho nmst cuterprisin<z and most liberal
citizens iu all the land 1 trust that your
counsels and labors will tend to dovelop
and aggrandize our State, and to enlist
her people in an enterprise. wl\ich
promises so much bcuclit to them and to
the whole county.
