The Vagabond Sage.
An old man of very active physiog
nomy, answering to the naano of Jaoob
Wilmot. wag brought to the Polico Court
His clothes looked as though they might,
have been bought second hand iu his
youthful prime, for they had Buffered
more from rubs of the woild than the
proprietor himseif.
" A hat business ?"
uNune; I'm a traveller."
"A vagabond, perhaps ?" Afe
"You are not far wrong. Travelers
and vagabouds are about the same thing
The difference is that the latter travel
without money and the former without
brains?"
"Where havo^oji^avte4?-'?
^^IHjYeHne Continent."
"For what purpose?"
"Obscrvat ion."
"What have you observed?" *
"A little to commend, much to ccn
Euro aud a grcot deal to laugh at."
?'Humph! what do you oommend?"
"A handsome womau lhat will Btay at
home, an eloquent preacher who will
preach short sermons, a good writer
that will not write too much, and a fool
that has sense enough to hold his
tongue."
'iWhat do you censure?"
"A man that marries a girl for her
fine clothing, a youth who studies modi
oice while he hau the use of his hands,
and the people who will elect a drunkard
to offico,"
'?What do y>u laugh at?"
"I laugh at a man who expects po
sition to command that respect which
personal qualifications and qualities do
not merit."
Ho was dismissed.
Don't Begin
A few years ago I saw a pert little boy
washing tobacco leaves, and I asked
him?
'What are they good for ?'
He replied, 'Oh. they're good to make
cigars of."
'But aro cigars good for anything
when they are made?' #
'I don't knowj I like 'era pretty
well.1
What a pity a boy of fourteen should
like eigars I Tobacco has its uses,
" since nothing was made in vain, but I
don't thsnk smoking or chewing are its
legitimate uses. Much can bo said
against theso habits; vorj little in their
favor.
They waste time.
They annoy others.
They waste money.
They injure the health.
They scent the clothing.
They mako the brcr'h foul.
Thoy corrupt the atmosphere
Are not theso reasons enough against
using tobacco ? And tho worst of it is
they all are true. Few thoughtful, can
did persons, though they may themselves
bo victims of tho habit, will deny ono of
them. Dr. Frauklin said ho never met
ft man that used tobacco who advised
him to follow his example.
"Use doth breed a habit in a man."
Bad habits are easily formed,
"But when you would strip them,
?Tis being flayed alivo."
Thorofore, boys, don't Uarn to smoko.
Don't learn to liko the useless indul
gence.
Keep your lips clean.
Keep yourselves freo.
Never begin!
