Beautiful Tribute to a Wife. '
James Mciatosh. the laistorian,
was married to Miss Catherine Stuart,
a young Scotch lady.. After her death
lie depicted her character, in .a letter to
I was guided in my ehoicO only by
the blind affections of my youth. I
found an intelligent corOpanaon and a
tender friend, a prudent monitress, the
most faithful of wives; and a mother as
tender as childrer ever had the misfor
tune to lose. I met a women who, by
tender t annagement of my weaknesses,
, gradually corrected the most pertina
vionus of them, Sh.e became prudent
frotn,affection'-; and though of the most
genet'ous nature, she was taught frugali
ty and. economy by " her love for me.
Durink the most critical. period of my
life she relieved inc. She gently re
claimed me from dissipation ; she propp
, ed my weak and irresolute nature; she
, urged my indo!ence to all the exertions
that have been useful and creditable to
me, and she was perpetually at hand to
admonish my heedlessness or improvi
- dence, To her I owe whatever I am;
to her whatever I shall be. In her sol.
icitude for my interest she has never
forgot my feeling or character. Even
in her occasional resentment, for which
J but toooften gave her cause, (would
-to God I could recall those moments I)
r-he had no sullenness or acrimony. Her
- eghlngs were wvarm, nay, impet.uous
glut she was placable, tender and con
tant. Such ,was she whom I lost, when
her actual natural sense was improving,
after eight years struggle and distress
bound us fast together and moulded our
ten, pers to each other ; when a know.
ledge of her worth had refined my
youthful love into friendship, and before
age had deprived it of much of its origi
nal ardor., I lost her, alas I the choice
of my yout h, the pat tner of my misfor
tunes, at a moment when I had the
prospect of her sharing my better days.
