An unknown peron of Williams
burg, Va., who signs himself "A
lebel of 1805, a patriot of 1876,"
observing that the last monthly debt
statement fixed the national debt at
*2,244,420,981 25, has written to
Secretary Bristow a letter inclosing
twenty-five cents "to pay the last
two figures," and expresses the hope
that five other persons as patriotic
as himself may be found during the
Centennial year who will liquidate
the debt by each paying off two of
the remaining ton figures.

would not believe you on oath, what
would you say 1" And calmly the
witness mado his reply : "I would
say you lied."- A gentle smile dif
fused itself all over the court-room,
as the unruffled witness stepped
down.
