DAILY NEWS.
TUESDAY MORNIKa, SEPTEMBER 12, 1365.
LOCAL MATTERS.
In addition to our former election returns, wo
havo the following :
Neiebeiry.?E. P. Lake, R. S. Stewart, Henry
Bummer.
Lexington.?licuar-. Boozer ana Fox.
?We are requested to stato that the Mail Btoam
ehip Granada arrived off the bar on Sunday, at 8
o'clock F. M., and that aho waB provonted from
coming in earlier than ahe did becauao of her
heavy freight.
FAnDON to Gov-BMOB AiKEN.?We are pleased
to mention that our fellow-citizen, tho Hon. Wk.
Aiken, yesterday received by mail, from Hia Ex
celloncy Anurew Johnson, a full and completo
pardon.
Mustered Out_Wo are informell that the 33d
Boutll CaroUna and 102d Michigan U. S. C. T. aro
on their way from up the country to their placea
of rendezvous, to bo muatcrod out of service.
Tue Rice Chop neab Georgetown, S. C?A
letter from Georgetown, S. C, dated September
2, gives a favorablo notice of Borne of tho rico
crops in that neighborhood, and affords us the
hope that at least in the localities mentioned
eomcthing moro than provisions will bo made.
Below wo give the extract from the lotter above
mentioned; and as it puts the freodmen in a moro
favorable light than many others have, it affords
us much satisfaction to assist its publicity:
Geoboetowk, S. C, Sept. 2, 1865.
Agreeably to your reouost I have insuoctod Mrs.
Izard s places, and find thorn in a aiuch better
condition, and tho nogroc- more orderly und well
behaved, than I anticipated. Thu> seemed glad
to seo some one who was aulhc-.izod by their mis
tress to visit them. At the Mi''.on plantation there
aro 125 acres of rico planted, ami 20 acres of corn,
good for two-thirda of a crop.
At Weyraouth 94 acres of rico and 38 acres of
corn, and on Island tr&ct G3 acres of rice. At
Hickory Hill about 150 aerea in rice and 20 aerea
in corn, on oil of which I think two-thirds of a
crop will ho made. The drivers say that they oro
very much in need of shot and powder; if you can
send up a bag of rico bird shot ami a he?; of pow
der, please do so, as it is indispensably necoBsary
to keep tho birds off tho rice. These crcaturos,
you know, are very destructive. 1 have seen en
tiro fields totally destroyed by them.
Tue South Carolina Railiioad_Mr. MAoitATn,
the President of this Road, has returned, and re
ports having boon completely successful in procur
ing iron and other materials for the construction
of this road. By the first of October the commu
nication between Charleston and Columbia will, in
all probability, be re-established, and the iron is
now on its way for. the benefit of the Hamburg
road. The entire work is now progressing, aud
as soon as the breakB are overcome which now in
terrupt the several lines, a rapid completion,
without r.ny kind of delay, may bo oxpected.
CimiE.?When wo glance over the papers of some
of our sister Southorn cities, wo aro appalled at
the lists of midnight robberies, assaults, highway
thefts, &c, that meet our eye, and wo wonder if
crime stalks in our Btreets, as wo see it does in
other places, without an effort to stop it. AVo lind
that tho efforts made here arc as effectual as can
he under tho circumstances, and our city is as
clear of burglaries, or highway robberies at night,
or riots, or brawls, as any in tho Union. That a
great deal, if not all, of this is due to tho efficiency
of the present police under the supervision of
Captain E. O. Hoffman, cannot bo denied; and as
au evidence of what wo have said, we rcfor to the
annexed table, which exhibits but few offences in
the large population that we now havo in tho city.
The following number of arrests for tho annexed
crimes have been made by the city police for tho
week ending September 10, 1865:
For theft.14
For drunkenness.12
For assault and battery..2
For disorderly conduct.9
For vagrancy.2
Total number arre?is.39
TheDowk-Tow^ Book Store.?Walking through
Broad-street, on Saturday last, wo dropped into
the store of our old friend, S. G. Coortknay, who
has recently returned from tho North. Piles of
literary merchandise, from the floor, were being
placed in order upon the shelves, and the busy
appearance of tho establishment not only romind
' ed us of days past, but assured us of a good time
?- coming r-.gain. Among tho many good- which have
. just been received, wo noticed a largo assortment
of "nursery books," from tho celebrated English
house of Routi.euoe k, Co., of superior style, be
ing printed on lin.cn popprj and having fino, well
painted wood-cuts as, illustrations. Tho "little
people" of our city, we know, will be glad to hoar
. this news, and wo oxpoct anon to seo the store be
-icged, for it is a long time since they havo had an
opportunity of perusing'their favorito works, so
gorgeously got up as these ; and the melancholy
laic of "Cock Robin," and tho exciting story oi
"Little Red Riding Hood," will bu rendered much
more effective to them by tho high-colored pictures
which adorn tho pre v nt edition of these celebra
ted hooks. .. AH? . .... ..J. i
AnciiiKAi_> Getty A iCo.?A reforonoo to our ad
Tortisinc columns will show a fine assortment o:
goods which have just bcenreceived by this house
per stearaor Moneka. Aa all articles of trado a
this establishment arc only of that cWbb known ai
ANo. 1, wo are satisfied that they must demanc
tho attention of tho public.
