City Ordinance -A- B. WESCOTT, Acting Sergeant
of Police, sworn, aaid : On my round last night I
found a brui going on in Princesa street ; it waa
reported to me by tbo policeman as a nuisanco,
and very diaordorly, and that tbey had no
license. It waa an opon ball. Asked dofendant if
they had authority to carry on the ball from the
city authority ; he uaid ho had not *, then aakod if
bo charged for going to an open ball ; he said ho
did not ; but, upon further inquiry, found every
ono who wont in had to pay fifty conta. I arroet
od bim then, and lodged bim in the Guard HOUBO.

Dight ho beard the cry of police, and went to
the bouae and found it very disorderly. They
woro fighting iu tho bouso. I brought out some
who were fighting, and lot thom go again, on con
dition that they would leave the place, which they
did. Tbo neighbors all around wore complaining
very much. They Baid the dance had boon going

the Sergeant carno round I told bim about it, and

The docreo ia as follows: "The Court finds tho
defendant guilty, and fine bim in the sum of ten
dollars, or imprisonment for ten days in tho com
mon jail of Charleston, 8. (!,, in dofanlt of pay
ment." ?
United States vs. David Morrison and Nathan
Robertson (colored). S. J. COATS, ?worn, said that
last Tuesday morning Mr. PHILLIP a came to me,
and aaid he had lost a roll of cloth, and gave me a
sample. [Produced in Court.] upon inquiry, I
found that the d?fendante had eomo of the same;
alao hoard that a piece of the same kind of cloth
had been Bold on Gadaden'B Wharf. I notiflod Mr.
PHILLIPS of thean facts, and adviaed him to got
oat a search warrant. He did so. We recovered
a portion of the cloth on Gddsdon's Wharf. I de
livered it at the Guard House, and on our way we
met with N. Robertson, one of the defendants, in
Calhoun-streot, and arreated him. He had a
bundle under his arm, and acted BO suspiciously
about it, that it attractod my attention. I exam
ined his bundle, and found ? small piece of the
gooda loat in it. He said it was a piece of the
stolon cloth, but that ho had bought it. When I
got him to the Guard House, he eaid another per
son bad given it to him. He eaid that Morrison,
tho other defendant, was with him when they stole
tho cloth, and that he (Nathan) was with Morri
son in Aneon-stree t when they sold the oloth. We
then looked them up. Found guilty, and sentenced
to pay a fine of 15 eaob, and in default of paying
which Bum, to ten days' hard labor on the streets
of Charleston.
United States vs. John Williams, colored.
Burglary.-Dr. J. S. MITCHELL, sworn, said last
night, about 2 or 3 o'clock, the policeman brought
the defondant to my house. He had got in at
night and Btolen a cloak, hat and clock from mo.
The policeman brought him there, and he had the
articles in a bag. He said ho had been in the
house and taken the articles.
Policeman Jos. WINQAT, No. 144, sworn, said : I
arreated the defendant in Rutledge-street, be
tween Bee and Cannon streets, last evening; he
bad a clock in his possession, and said he got it
from Mr. MITCHELL'S house; I took him there, and
found the front- door and tho other doors open in
side I knocked, and a lady looked out the win
dow, and told her I had a dock; soon after the
Duator and another gentleman came down and
identified the dook. The defendant said he had
taken the clock, a sack coat, and a hat, out of the
Doctor's houeo. Found guilty, and sentenced to
thirty iluya' hard labor on tho streets.

John Waring (colored) sworn, says on Monday
night, just before day, in Church -a tr cot, at Mr.
GLOBE'S lot, an old lady heard a noieo, and, as she
opened the window, the defendant and another
made a dash at her, when tho defendant dropped
the stick in the garden; Jupiter and I went after
defondant, but be got away from him. Defendant
dropped this stick (big log of wood), and Jupiter
said he know tbo defendant had that Btick last
night in Church-street. Found not guilty. Dis
charged.

REV. E. H. MARVIN, one of tho Bishops lately
elected by the Methodist General Conference,
comes from Missouri, from which Stato bo went
with General PRICE, as his Chaplain, into tbo
army, and served on that peaceful and heavenly
duty throughout the late unhappy conflict. The
fact that his ministerial ?brethren chose him
Bishop on the first ballot, shows their high esti
mate of his character and abilities.
METHODIBT CHURCH IN COLUMBIA, S. C-TII?B

Gen. SHERMAN paBsed through Columbia; nor the

The General Conference, by a resolution, has
commended Mr. MURCHISON to the kindnesB and

"Quite an explosion was heard on Thursday
last, which was occasioned by the?inordiuate ex
pansion of the ga*os in a soda fount. W. BURKS
and Mr.-HOOD, the gentlemen engaged in ar
ranging the same, were seriously injured. We
crave the refreshing infiaeuces of soda water dur
ing the hot months, and we are glad to hear that
the gentlemen above named, not discouraged by
the unfortunate accident, have resolved "to pick
