T HKin FIB8T MEETING AFTE? A YBAll'H SEPAHATION
-LETTE!? FROM TUB EI-Pl?KHII>Et?T.
A correspondent of tbo Norfo.k Virginian, writ
ng from Fortress Monroo, May 4th, says:
It is now understood that Mrs. Davis, with her
1 ittle child, had an interview with nor husband at
half-past oight o'clock yostcrilay morning. The
i ntorviow lasted noarly two hoars, and must sure
ly bavo boon extremoly gratifying to both. lu tho
oonreo of a twelve month many very noliceablo
changes occur. It wau ou tho evening of tho 20th
of April, 18G5, that the stoam?r lfm. P. Clyde,
from which a tow hours boforo Jefferson Davis had
been landed, slowly set Bail, ami whilo tho atoam
And Biiidko iasnod from her origino and boilers,
she moved elowly out of tho harbor. Tho HOIO
BasBcngora on tho Civile wero Mrs. Davia and Mrs.
lay. and her destination waa Havannah, tho
Southon] port from which sho carno.
For nearly a your Mrs. Davis has beoa refused
the priviloge of visiting hor husband. Tho result
of the many ontroiuiou on her part, and thora of
hor frionds, has at last prevailed on tho clemency
of President Jubiiuon, and tho desired boon Lae
boon finally granted.
Your correspondent presumed yesterday morn
ing at an early boor so inuoli au to call?n Mrs.
Davis aa she was awaiting, in tho sitting room of
tbo Hygeia Hotol, tho prosonco of au ofiicor from
tbe Fortress. Sending in ray oard by tho colored
waiter in attendance, the desired object wau ut
once acceded to.
The sitting room of tbo hotel has novor, by any
means, been noted for its comfort, or tho oxpen
.ivonosa of its adornments. Entering the room,
and passing through the requisito etiquotto, oc
onpied but a few seconds, and the agreeable con
versation with Mrs. Davis which ooBued, was far
more than a recompense for tho courage it re
quired to solicit H no li an interviow. The manner
and oonversation of Mrs. Davis was that of one
perfectly at homo on all euhjoctB, and extromely
fady-hko ia all her remarks on the various t?pica
of the day, which, perchanco, were brought up.
She had been allowed the privilege of correspond
ence with her husband, but of the exaot state of
his health sho dared not hopo. The favorable
opinions formed from the occasional correspon
dents of Northern papora wero often disnipated
by assertions perfectly contradictory, and in the
long timo which has elapsed since she has seen
her husband it has often been a moro matter of
doubt, owing to the reticence of Mr. Davis in
speaking of the subject of his general health. Of
the terms of her vnit she was not aware, but
hoped it would be her privilege to remain at this
plaoe until her husband's fato was decided.
After conversing for the spaco of ton minut?e
your correspondent roti>od much impressed with
the interviow.
Mrs. Davis was accompanied by a large quan
tity of baggage. All of this was movod inside
the Fort last night, and it is confidently presum
ed that she ha>s made her home at the residence
of Dr. Cooper, tho Post Surgeon.
[From the Fayettoville Now*, May 1.]
We spread beforo our readers the following let
ter from Ex-President David, in responso to one
from the ladies of Fayettevile, enclosing a check
for Mrs. Davie :
.'FOBTOESS MONBOE, VA., 22d April, 18C6.
"Mrs. J. K. Kyle, FayettevUle, N. C. :
"MY DEAR MADAME-I have the honor to ac
knowledge yours of the 14th ?nut., euolosing a
check to bo forwarded to Mrs. Davis as a present
from the ladies of Fayetteville.
"Sadly remembering hiw your homes were des
olated during tho war, I could not have expected
you, in the mirl.it, of the ruin, to have benn mind
ful of the wants of those at a distance Nothing
coala add to my admiration for tho heroic, solf
denying, Christian virtues of my countrywomen,
for the measure was full to overflowing. Nor could
anything increaao the gratitude with which I will
ever recur to their confidence and sympathy. It
only remains to assure you, and tho ladies whom
you represent, that I am most gratefully and re
spectfully your friond and obedient servant,
"JEFFERSON DAVIS."
The Fortress Monroo correspondent of the New
York Herald, alter mentioning the arrival of Mrs.
DAVIS, says : .
She was not long kept in anxiety. Mr. Davis
had been apprised of her corning. Within fifteen
minn te? from the time of her admission to t hu fort
sho was with him in Carroll Hall. Lieut. Fessen
den ?till bore her company. Sho has remained
with Mr. Davis all day, and took her dinner with
him. An officer has been connt&otly in the samo
room. Their meeting was a tender and affecting
ono, as such a n~eeting must naturally bo nitor
snob a protracted separation, and particularly
iiiuler the circumstances attending their separa
tion.

AN INTBHESTING SEQUEL TO A HASTY DIVOBCE_
A correspondent of the Volksfreund, writing from
"Tho Indiana Prairie," April 30, relates the fol
lowing :
"In Sullivan county a young married pair, who
had been united in the bonds of wedlock about
six years, having become somewhat mutually dis
agreeable of late, tbo busband, in his anger,
hastened to a lawyer, and took steps to obtain a
divorce from his ?.vito. One day ho carno homo to
bia wife and said to her: "Betsy, I have fulfilled
your wish. You said you wished you were sepa
rated from mo. Hero is tho decree of divorce."
His wife was at first surprised, but far too indig
nant to betray any emotion. W10 said abo was
roady to louve. She only needed to pack UD her
?;oods. Sho wished he would bo present to seo
hat abo took nothing except whal was her own.
He stepped into tho adjoining room with her
whoro the bureau and clothes-press woro. The
wifo proceeded in silence to tako out tho clothes,
when suddenly hor eyes fell upon a small dress,
and quite overcome, she broke out in convulsivo
weeping. Tho husband, hitherto an indifferent
observer, remarked her otnotiou, and discovered
tho cause. It was the dress of their only child,
a little daughter of three years, who had died
almost two years ago. The hnabind was not less
affected by the eight than his wife. Ho embraced
her with omotion, begged her pardon again and
again, tore the decree of divorco into a thousand
pieces, hastonod to the Clerk's office, took out a
new marriage license, and was married imme
diately to bia late wife."
