COTTON.-The business of the week ondlng on tho
3d instant closed on a very unsettled market, with Ir
regular and depressod prices, tho nowa from Europo
! having been unqualifiedly bad for some time. On Fri
day, tho ith iiiBt., tho flrut day of tho preaont week, the
market here assumed r? moro'firm ?nd regular tone-the
valuo of tho ?tapio became more setilod, and with a fair
demand, the ?slea of the day extonded to about 280
balos at Mc to 28c per Jb for Ordinary to Good Ordinary,
58o to 29o per lb for Mlddlinir, and Sic for Good Middling
Cotton. On Saturday, owing in a great mcaaaro to tho
Uglit stock, the market ?tlffonod and the better grades
improved to the extent of le per lb. Middling Cotton
being quoted at 29o to 30o por ib, and Good Middling
Cotton at 32c por lb. On Monday purchasers appearod
to be indifferent about buyintr, and tho sales of the day
waro oonflnod to about 100 bales at previous raten. On
Tuesday and Wednesday the market continued Arm
with an advancing tendency, and the sales of the two
days amounted to 460 balos. Yesterday tbo light stock
still continued to give sellers the sdvsntago, and pur
chasers genorally had to pay extreme quotations in
order to fill their ordora. Tho sales amounted to 250
bales. We quote:

last report, bss naen so small that it Is unworthy of
mention, and wo learn that the limited stock in the
oouutry has boon nearly exhausted. Suoh small sales

H,HAY.- The arrivals of North River still continues
large, and amount? to about 2500 bales during the week.
Prices tinco oar last have somewhat receded, and we
are Informed of sales of about 900 bales North River at
$1.86, and 200 bales do. at ti.50.
. CORN.-The receipts continue lu good supply, and
foot up near 20,000 bushels tinco our last statement.
The market baa been irregular and unsettled, buyers
and Boilers being unable to agree. The latter were
generally disposed to sell at about $1.25 per bushol,
with bogs, the form or offering about $1.20 per bushel,
with bags. Wo quote the market at about $1.10 to
$1.15 per bushol weight, without bags. The transac
tion? of tho week have been almost entirely confined to
the retail trade. Wo learn of a sale of a mixed lot of
3000 bushels to arrive from New York at $1.08 per bushel
weight.
OATS.-Some five thousand bushels havo come to
band during the weok, and the market is folly supplied
with bat a limited demand. For large quantities, the
article is worth about 60 to 65c. per buahel, and in a re
tail way about 70Y.. per bushel measure.
FLOUR.-The demand has been small and the
market rather heavy; sales of Super have taken place at
$8.37 to $8.50 per bbl., and of Extra at $0.50 to $0.78
par bbl.
BACON-The stock has been growing light and ibu
demand aontluulng fair; the market has somewhat stif
fened and holders are disposed to ask higher prices for
prime meat. We quote Prime Shoulder? Arm at 16c
per lb., and Prime Ribbed Side? at 17'?o. per lb , with a
good demand.
TIMBER AN O LUM B F.R -The stock of prime Timber
.continue? good, wi<h sales of Common at $8.00 to $12.00
per M, and prime Shipping Timber at $18.00 to $24.00
per M, with a good demand; Steam Sawed Lu rubor is ln
fair roquo.it at $25.00 to $35.00 por M.
SALT.-The only transaction that we loam was a aale
of 600 sack? of common Liverpool, in good order, at
auction at $1 lax to $117>? per sack. The stock on band

FREIGHT-To Liverpool the rate romains without
change, say }{d. to 9-16d. y. lb for upland, and Id. for
Sea Island. To Havre there is no vessel on the berth.
A bark of about 600 tona has been charte od here to load
for Bordeaux with Timber and Ootton on private term?.
Coastwise to New York tbe steamers have reduced their
rates, and are now asking %o. $ lb for Upland, and le.

EXCHANGE.-Bills on England have Improved, and
sixty day drafts were quoted yesterdsy at COO, with some

Banks are checking on New York at Sight for j; per
cent, premium, and private drawers at psr. The Banks
are purchasing Sight checks at ! ; off; 10 to 15 dsys ?f
off; and 30 day? 1>4 off. Private drawora are buying
Sight drafts at y, to >4" oil.
GOLD is dull, and the Brokers were yesterdsy buying
at 27 and ?oiling at 38.

Is also stored several lots of prime Canada, but that
which Is wanted is Southern and Pennsylvania, all other

MoLAsflRH.-Our market is almost bare of Block in first
bands. - A cargo for boiling was recently purchased at
Philadelphia for Ballimore account. The two refineries
now established here for the manfaoturing of Hugar
from Molasses, will m&ke a botter market for the article
than heretofore.
PROVISIONS.-The market is active, and at Improving
prices generally. Bacon and Bulk Moats were to-day
most in demand. We roport tales of 60,000 lbs Bacou
Sides, loose, at I0s?c-, 10,000 lbs do at lGJic; 76"bhds do
at 17c; IShhds do Shoulders at 14o; and 60 do In Jobbing
lou at 14o to 14}?c; 60,000 lbs Bulk Shoulders at 13c;
60,000 lbs and 60 hhda Sides, bott? at $15 80 per 100 lbs.
Mess Pork is held at $30 per bbl, and Western Lud. in
tleroes and bbls, at 22o per lb. The market dosed very
Arm, with a farther advance anticipated. Hams are
also held higher, best brands quoted st 23Ko to 24c.

remark. Sales aro confined to lots from jobbers, and

MONEY MARKET.
The Bank return shows a large addition to the loans
since last Monday, nearly nine nilli ion a, which, on in
quiry, wo find to have been niadu chiefly on Govern
ment atooks. Thl J is about the only way ia which tho
heavy banka can employ their increasing country
balances. Thu spode and doposlt lines iucreuao $2,071,
060 and $7,G5t,728 respectively. Tho legal tender notes
aud notes of circulation ate about steady, aa compared
with the previous report. 'Iho miiktt fur money to-day
is 4 to 5 per cent, ou Government collateral, and 5 per
cent, as the general rule to the brokers ou miscellane
ous stack securities. The su ply is easier on Govern
ment than at the close of last week.
The latest foreign nowa by the China at Halifax lo tim
29th tilt., this morning, was less favorable io- United
States 5-20's, and not quite so good for the cotton trade
as by the orri val of tho 27th April, AS compared, how
ever, with tho news of last week, Iho colton interest
lookB much Improved, and there ia less distrust or un
easiness felt iu the result of the exchange drawn agatina
