TIIK CHARLESTON MARKET.
COTTON.-The receipts of the staple at this point
continues to faU off, and during the past week there
carno to hand 1118 bales against 1892 bales tho weok ba
loto. There WOB exported In tho satno time 493 bales,
and tbo week previous 2417 bales. The uncertainties of
tho future induce buyers to operate with great caution,
and the speculative purcbasor, who usually adds so
much to the tono of a market, has to act with unusual
prudence in tho prosout state of affairs; but in oocso
quuice of the bad crop prospects, hotders are generally
firm, and only sell at a declino under a financial pres
sure. On Friday, tho 22d lust., sellers having mado a
concession in prie? to the extent o? 1 to 1 ?-io. per lb.,
about 2?0 balos were disposed of on a basis of 33 to 34e.
per lb. for Middling, and 35 to 3Gc. per lb. for Strict Mid
dling Cotton. On Saturday the momentary expectation
Of the arrival of European nowa kept bnyers out of the
_u_r_et, and only 40 bales wero sold at the quotations of
the day before. On Monday tho foreign intelligence
not having arrived, the business of the day was oonfin
Od to a sale of 46 baloB of Strict Middling Cotton for
Spanish account at 36c. per lb. On Tuesday morning
the foreign accounts per steamship Aforaoian, with
dates to 15th inst, wero published, and although they
wero generally regarded as favorable, thoy produced no
effect on the market ; during this day some 120 bales
were sold at previous prices, say 33c. per lb. for Mid
dling, and 35c, for Strict Middling Cotton. On Wednes
day there waa conslderabl? activity, the business of lho
day extending to-50 bales, whloh, although at som?
what Irregular prices, the tales -were mostly at previous
ratea, except a lot of 60 bales of fino Cotton, whloh was
.aid to have been Bold at a price above our quotations.
Yeaterday the market was generally at a stand, tho finer
Cottons not being generally offored and; acaro?, and the
lower grades not being in much demand; The only
?ale wat 43 bales of 8irict Middling Cotton, the prioe of
?hieb did not transpire. We quote :
