Ooboneb'o Inquest in the Oase of tbe Mubdeb
of B. S. Rhett, Esq.?After an arduous inquisi
tion, conducted by Coroner Whitino, with hiB
usual indefatigable zoal, it hae been pretty well
ascertained how Mr. Rhett came to hie doath.
The following is & brief abstract of tho evidence:
J. E. Runup, Esq., testified to having drawn a
sum. pro. petition against one Sam. CaWaon, a
freedman, for Mr. Rhett, at 2 P. M., on the day
Of hi6 doath.
Anthony Rarnwell (colored), testified to Mr.
Rhott'a having given him a gun to keop off certain
persons from bis farm; to John Bull alias Ben
nett, having a long quarrel with Mr. Rhett; to
Horace Greeley alias Johnson, stealing water
melons from Mr Rhett's farm, and to John Bull
alia* Bonnett. threatening to kill deponent, ant
saying that no had laid wait for him iu tho gap.
(The gap ?b the place whoro Mr. Rhett was shot.)
Jemmia Way (colored), identified Horace
Greeley alias Johnson, as tbe man who said he
"had shot the d-d old son of a b-h, but did
not know if he bad killed him."
Catharine Collins (colored), identified Horace
Greeley alias Johnson, and said that he had been
absent from home July 3d, from early in tho
morning until late in the evening, and that tho
gun before the jury was the gun usually kept
in Greeley'o? house, and that it was not In the
-house WBiR) bo was absent July 3d. Heard
Horace Greeley say he had shot a man.
Frederick D?waon (colored), testified to Mr.
Rhett's having words with Horace Greeloy in De
cember last, and ordering him off the farm.
Beckey Fambell (colored), testified to Horace
Greeley having gone out on the 8d of July with a
double-barrel gun.
Jas. N. Chapman (c.o?orea), testified to having
seen Horace Greeley with tho gun now before tho
Jury, on July 8d, and to his being absent from
home at dark of that day, and to bis laughing
when, he eaid Rhett was killed. Deponent eweare
that he bbliovos, from tho conduct of Horace,
that he killed Rhett.
Oscar Silver (colorod) testified to Horace not
being at home on the evening of July 3d, and to
tbe pistol before tbo jury being tbe same he hat
Been in possession of Horace.
Abraham Brown (culored) testified to Horace's
upeaking of Mr. Rhett having turned him off the
farm.
Ham Dawaon (colored) testified to a colored
man having drawn a gun on Mr. Rhett.
Cain Hercules, colored, testified to a great inti
macy between Horace Greoley and John Bull.
John Bennett, aliaa John Bull (colored), testi
fied to Horsoe being very muoh excited, when he
told him Rbett was dead, and to his saying that
?ho a-? old son of a b-h Rhott had ordered
him off bis farm.
York German (colored), tostified to Horace
being abaont from borne until 11 o'clock on tbe
evening of July 8, and to tbo gun and pistol be
fore the Jury being the same he had seen in Ho
race's house.
There were Beveral other witnesses, whoso tes
timony contained nothing important to the issue.
Horace Greoloy, alias Johnson, made a confos
?ion before the Jury, to tbo effect tbat Mr. Rhbt-j
-was killed by a gun in the hands of John Bull uni.

alias Bonnett, were in a branoh and saw Mr. Bhetl
coming on tho causeway on horaebaok. John said
fire and shoot that man. Horaco eaid, for what'
John said, shoot him. and took hold of the gun
and while both had hold of it, both barrels wen'
off at or abono the aamo timo, and shot Mr. llhott

kiUod by firearms in the bands of Horace Gro?le*
and John Bull, and tbat the said Greeloy as prin
cipal, and tho said Bennett as accessory, Mo
-nioualy did kill tho said Mr. Rhett.
At tho oIobo of tbe inquest tbe jury adopted tbt
following resolution:
Resolved, That it la duo to Liontenant Hend
ricks, and officers Farroll. Caldwoll, and Davis, am
to Hut-Roam Noloon and the police under him, tt
whom the credit of ferreting out this oaee be
longs, that the publio ehould bo made aware o
their valuablo services. "

clothos on in Court, and they wore identified b;
tho owner. The prisoner made a lame oxcus
about buying them from somebody else, but hi
statement not being substantial by any evidence
he was fined $20, and aentenoed to hard labor fo

room, and defendant and barkoopor quarrelled
about tlio pay for tho drinks. Tho barkeeper ran
dofondant across tho etroot, and ho ran into a

wbothor he was pushed into tho window, or ran
into it without bong paahed. Somo of the wit

oaor against tho window, but tho barkcepor aworo
thai ho did not touch him. Tho Court fined tho
priaonor $5. and to tho groat aurpriso and diugust
of tho barkeeper, sent him into tho dock, and

5th inet. Tho guilt of tho prisoner waa rondored
tho more heinous by tho fact that at tho timo of
tbo tho ft ho was aleoping at Mr. Hall's through
tho charity of that gontloman, to whom ho had
roproBontod that ho had no homo. Tho prisoner
waa a black boy of somo thirteen or fourtoon
omb of ago, with vory rod oyee, and tho tears
odewing his faco.
Ho was Bontenced to sixty daya' hard labor.

a colored boy softly with a brick, waa finod $5,

ordor of Gon. floott forbidding the aale of spirits
to froodmon. Thoy expressed themsolvea igno
rant of tho prooiso meaning of tho order, and also
relied on a certain explanatory oiroular issued by
Gon. Scott siuco the publication of his order.
Tho Court did not think tho circular applicable,
butin consideration of their professed Ignorance
mado the floe as light as poaaible, but warned
them that a??opotitlon of the offence would be
more severely punished.
I?i?? Reed vs. South Carolina Railroad.?Suit
for $5000 damages.?This caBe, which haa beon
pending for some timo, has created some public
intoreat, and ia in substance as follows :
In tho fall of 1863 Isaac Rood, a free person of
color, then in tho employ of tho South Carolina
Railroad Company, was injured and crippled-.for
life ?rhilo attempting to lift heavy wheels in the
course of his work, and for tho injury thus re
ceived he brought this suit. The plaintiff claimed
that ho waa engagod aa a carpenter, and was in
jured while working as an ordinary labor or, and
that it was tho ouatom of the company to employ
the mon injured in ita aervioo, and that they had
refused to employ him. The defendant ahowed
that be waa not employed specially aa a carpenter,
that it was not their invariable ouatom to employ
men injured in their service, and that plaintiff
left their service and went off with Sherman,
when other hands atayod with them, and also that
they kept a book, in which employoea signed, to
protect the road against damages for accidente.
The Court decided in favor of defendanta.
Messrs. Conner and Porter appeared for the
defendants.

hist, makes the following roport: "Aa the favo

struck on tho ennkon wreck of a gunboat, lying
opposite "Willink's lowor yard, closo to the chan
nel, Btarting her stem, causing her to leak badly,
and damaging tho cargo in her lower hold. Ef
forts to relieve her being found unavailing, tho
steamer Tico Boys, provided with Wood's Valve
lesa Pomps, got up steam, and waa soon engaged
in an effort to relieve her, while the steam tug 0.
if. Petit proceeded to take off aa much of the
cargo as poaaible, with a view to lightening the
vessel. Binoo writing the abovo, the Steam Fire
Engine of the Metropolitana also wont to her aa
B?tance, and we learned at a late hour that there
was fourteen feet of .water in her hold, and that
ehe was making water quite fast. Every effort
will be made to relieve her from her unfortunate
position,"
National Convention.?The Carolina Times,
published at Charlotte, N. C, publishes an oc
count of a publio meeting held at tho Court House
in that (own on Thursday last, for the purpose of
appointing Delegates to a Distriot Convention to
meet in Salisbury on the 24th inat., to seleot
delegates to represent that District in the Nation
al Convention. Twonty-two Dolegates were ap
pointed at this preliminary meeting.

Attempted Assassination.?As Mr. J. D. Mahony,
formerly of Charleston, but now a citizen of Sum
ter District, was paaaing from thia place to hia
home, a mile or two distant, a few days oinoe,
some person to him unknown, fired at him from
the road aide with a gun. inflicting a severe
wound. The intention, no doubt, waa to take hia
life. As far as we know, Mr. Mahony ia a peace
able, orderly andinoffenaivo citizen.
