With great pleasure we direct the attention of
our readers to tbe advertisement of tbis seminary
of learning, which appears in our colurnuu this
morning, and would recommend it as one of the
finest establishments for tbo instruction of youth
in tbo otate. With no long list of references or
other show, it modestly makes known its where
abouts and its terms, but its friends know that
there is aa much talent and ability within its walls
as often is possessed by those who mako the most
elab?ralo display.
Splendid Steamed.-Tbo now aud beautiful
steamer Lady of tho Lake, Captain Wilson, from
Wilmington, Del, row on her first voyago, ar
rived here yesterday on her way to Mobile. She
is intended for tho mail, piSi-ougcr, and freight
trafilo from New Orleans to Mobile, and is furnish
ed with every couvei.icnco and luxury for the com
fort of the traveller, and her large and airy sa
loons are far in advance of everything which has
proviouBly como under our observation. Captain
Wilson was a frequent visitor to Charleston in
former days, and wo are gratified to seo that be
has charge uf so magnificent a vcseol.
WlLMTNOTON AND MANCHESTER RAILROAD.-A
gentleman from Florence informs us that tbis
company have just received from tbo establish
ment of McQueen, of Sohoucctady, Now York, a
most elegant and powerful locomotive, which han
been called tbo "It. It. Bridges," rb also one of
the finest passenger cars in the Southern country,
being arranged, among other accommodations,
with berths for Bleeping. Tbis latter is from the
workshop of Button, Dyeman <fc Co., of Philadel
phia. Wo congratulate tho Wilmington and Man
chester Bailroad Company on their success, and
commend their efforts to tbo consideration of
some other railroad corporations.

Artiolo 10, "The Huguenot Maiden," is a tale of
South Caro'ina, written by a young lady of tbis
oity, now temporarily residing in Virginia. The
story is one of thrilling interest, and well told.
She is a young writer of promise, and we shall bo
ploased to seo her try again.

Mayor's Court, July 27 -A malo and femaba of
tho "old clo* " persuasion, having been warned
several times, wero brought before His Honor for
hanging coate, voBts and pantaloons so far in tho
etrcot as to interfere very much witb foot passen
gers. The lady had a groat deal of talk, half
Dutch and half English, and appeared na anxious
to get rid of thia suit, aa she ia to dispose of aome
at her shop; but the Mayor was inexorable, and
fined both parties (5 each.
A Hebrew gentleman, witb largo speotaoles and
slightly dilap died in appearance, and who bad
evidently been looking at somobody drinking, and
a Milesian, with one arm, were brought tip for
fighting in the street, at one o'olook in tho morn
ing; and, aa it appoar<*d that the man in barnacles
had not only got up tho row, but had one of bia
eyes measured, for a mit o? mourning, ho waa
further puniahed by bel?g fined $5, whioh bo de
clined paying, being out of ruuds, but kindly con
sented to remaiu in the "Banquet Hall" for five
dayo, where ho can enter into speculations on the
European war, and be surrouudod at all timoa by
at backet of water and a loaf of bretd. The Irish
man was discharged.

tunately tbo Court did not seo it in tboso lampa,
and tho unfortunate William was condemned to
pay ton dollars, or bo put to hard labor for sixty
days.
Tho United States D5. Obarlos Wright, for Lar
cony.-Tho prisoner was accused of taking a coat
and twenty dollars in greenbacks. The evidoncr
brought against him was only circumstantial,
and, though ratbor strone:, was not sufficient to
convict the accused. Charles escaped by tho akin
of his teeth, but was advised that, though he waa
now Wright, another time he might not be so for
tunate.
Unitod States vs. Washingtou Bryan-Stealing
a Chain,-Tho accused candidly acknowledged his
guilt, and disclaimed all relationship with the
father of his country. In consideration of his
oandor, tho Court sentenced bim to pay ton dol
lars or sixty days1 hard labor.
Rev. John A. Broados, of South Carolina, has
boon eloctcd President of tho isichuiouu, Va.,
Baptist College. The Times saya :
"The deration of President Broadna will thrill
with dolight tbo boarts of tho wuolo Baptist de
nomination in Virginia, His learning, and pecu
liar tact for imparting instruction, bavo placed
him in a position not to bo excelled by any scholar
in our midet, while tito sweet, goldou-toiigned
eloquence, for which ho may bo termed the
CurysoBtom of tho Southern pulpit, added to his
fecveucy and piety have rendered him dear to all
tho communities wliorover his voice has been
heard. Ho is now a Professor at the Greenville,
South Carolina, Theological Seminary, was for
merly pastor of tbo church at Charlottsvillo and
Chaplain to the University."
This college building was known in Confederate
times as tho "Louisiana Hospital."
Gen. M. W. G?BET.-From tho Richmond Ex
aminer, of the 26th, we copy the following notice
of Gen. Garet:
Wo were gratified yestorday to receive a visit
from General 31, W. Garey, of South Carolina, a
cavalry officer of merit and distinction during tho
lato war. At its outbreak ho raised a company,
which he comm aided, and at the first battle of
Manaaaaa his comm ?ud fought with conspicuous
bravery, capturing a number of guus from the
enemy. From the position of Captain, Garey
roso through all the intermediate grades, was
made Brigadior-General, and placed in command
of a brigade of cavalry, which participated in
many of tho hard-fought battles waged for the
Coesession of Richmond, an?l repulsing, aingle
anded. several Fetteral advances upon the city.
General Garey, reposing upon his well-earnod
military laurels, has entered upon the practice of
law at Edgefield Court House, South Carolina.
