LOCAL MATTERS.
-?. ? o-_
Oun Prices CunnENT, containing tho fullest
commercial anil marino intoUigcnco, with valuablo
tabica, will bo ready to deliver to our patrons at an
early hour thin morning.
We ark indebted to Mr. Yooleu for lato copies
of all tho Now York Dailies, which ho receives by
mail every night.
Proceedings of City Council.-On account of
the press of other matter, wc aro compelled to post
pone tho publication of Mi oso proccodings to our
noxt issue.
The Anderson Papers.-Wo had the pica-mire
yesterday of a v?b? from Mr. James A. Horr, of tho
Andorson Intelligencer, and Mr. W. S. Walters, <rf
the AnderBou Appeal. Thoao gentlemen aro in
Charleston on buainoas for their papers, and we
rv'-iniiiiieiiil thom to tho kind cousidoration of our
merchants.
Wanted at this Office.-A gonMoman, having
his own convoyance, ia wanted, to net as Gcnoral
Travelling Agont for The Daily and Weekly
News.
An enorgotio man can make two thousand dol
lars per annum, and havo stoady omploymont.
Apply at our office, No. lS_Hayno Btrcct.
Sinouxah Occobbence.-A covered box was dis
covored floating in Town Creek yostcrday by Mr.
D_Hi_n_-. Its curious appearance attracted his
attention, and ho took it in his boat, but was
Juorror-Btruck, on opening it, to discover enclosed
tho body of a newly born white female infant. He
brought the box to tho city and roportcd tho facts
to the Coroner. A jury waB promptly cmpannoUed,
and a verdict of death from causes unknown re
turned. No clue baa boon obtained that would
lead to tho detection of tho perpetrators of tho in
fanticide
We are pleased to leam that MesBrs. Keyes,
Stoweus and Byrem havo beau released from con
finement in Fort Delaware, and aro now at their
homes in Anderson. Tho Carolinian says: "Our
citizens aud tho pcoplo of tho State generally, will
bo grafifiod to loam that the gentlemen above
named, who for so many months havo lingered in
prison, and whilo in -Charleston wero under sen
tonco of death, havo arrived in Columbia on thoir
way to Anderson-their home. They leave for
home this morning, looking well, and in as good
spirits as might bo oxpoctod under tho circum
stances of their narrow escapo."
The Sumteb News.-Thoro is, perhaps, no Dis
trict in ?his -tato of moro proaent wealth, and of
moro prospect of improvement, under the new
order of things, than Sumter. With a large white
population, rich lands, and a healthy climate, she
iB destined to tako tho load among tho interior
districts, in every eloment of timo prosperity.
Sumter, the Court Houso Town, is Bitnatcd on ouo
of our thoronghfaroa of travel and inland commu
nication, and, alroady one of tho principal towns in
the Stato, bids fair, boforo many years, to outstrip
most of its competitor?. In such a locality the
presa should always bo well represented, and in
tliis instance we aro glad to Bay thatit is. Wo know
of no botter country shoot than tho Sumtor News.
Mr. H.. L. Darr, tho senior Editor, is well known
for his euccosBfid professional career ; aud bia
partner, Mr. N. G. Osteen, is a practical printer of
long experience. Tho Sumter News has a large
local circulation, and is a good advertising medium.
Mr. Darr has for a long time past boon an agont
of the Charleston Daily News, and to his ouer
gotie effort? wo aro indebted for many country
subscribers.
Kentucky Lottery on the Havana Plan.-Tho
managers of tho abovo swindling machine have
been 80 kind as to address us a circular, purport
ing to bo a private* lettor, in which thoy lament
tho poverty-strickon condition of tho South, ami
moro especially tho falling off of the lottery busi
ness in this Stato, and wiud up by offering to Bond
UB a splendid paokago of eight tickets for the
small sum of ton dollars. Woro the thing milly,
as it pretenda to bo, a private lotter, wo should
take it as an insult to our understanding; but as it is
only a circular, wo supposo the bait has boon thrown
to us as ono of tho many fish among whom tho lotte
ry man expects to find an occasional gudgeon. If
thoro aro aro any of our readers troubled with an
irresistible dosiro to throw away good monoy after
bad, and havo had that dosiro provoked by ono of
thoao neatly lithographed "misaivos of tho lottory
man, wo adviso thom to compromiso tho m attor,
and do as wo havo dono-send twenty dollars Con
federate currency for eixtcon lottery tickots.
KrN_-3T_j_ET.-Tho pleasant weather for tho post
few days has induced many persons to frequent
this fashionablo promenade. Tho atores that line
{ton either side prcsont so many attractions in
their tastefully arranged windows, that the ladies
are tompted by tho display to tako a poop at tho in
terior, and price this lovo of a dress, or something
eine that is equally onchanting. It is oasy to pasa
from a moro shoppor to a substantial buyor, and,
indeed, tho goods that aro bo temptingly exponed
on the counter? aro such alluring baits that it is
only a weak pocket that resists tho rrossuro.
But it is in tho afternoon that King-streotis seen
in all its glory. Thon tho shopping coases and tho
gaily drosBod crowds that slowly pass and repasa
boforo tho bowildorcd vision aro raoroly onjoying
thomsolvcs and displaying tho purchases made
previously. It would bo a manifest slight, not
only to King-strcot but to tho promonndcrs, to nog
loct mentioning tho ladios, who form by far the
principal features of attraction to tho idlo or for
tunato of tho opposite soi, who can afford to spend
an hour in gazing at the passing beauties.
That Charleston ia peculiarly favored in thit
rcBpocl fow will havo the hardihood to dony, for ii
is tho boast of Clmrlostonians that tho battoret
city haB boautios that ondear it to overy heart, ant
without whom tho world would bo a howling wil
dcrncss. The rocont fire in King street destroyed
one of the moat fashionablo rosorte whoro the fail
wore wont to regalo themselves with cream, cakea
and other dainticB, but on tho opposite sido Ma
Rion's still offors ita alluring attractions, and tin
trip across tho etrcot is frequently made by Mu
passing divinities.
On Friday and Snturday afternoons tho crowdi
aro always tho largest, for nnmbore of both sexoi
- who aro provontod daring the week from enjoyin/.
thomBclvos, thon minglo with tho throng and bc-"l
como a part of tho grund moving panorama. It iu
on theso occasions that tho counoiBBOur should pre
sent hiiUBolf; but by nil means let hiin ?bun tho
oornora if ho wishes to escapo tho angry lunka of
tho fair sex and the smothered pxcer:i lions of their
happy ?ittondants. Bather lot him, na beat lie
may, work Ii?b way along with a careful cyo to all
possiblo contingencies, mich as stopping on tho
ladies' drosaos, or aomo other owtVe action. It
would bo far boiler for him to play tho agreeable to
BOiiio of tho gay and fair, and our word for it, ho
will eco moro than ho could have done with his
unaided eyes.
When the evening shades begin to fall new bcau
tios are added to tho ucene, and from ovory storo
lights gleam upon tho .lowly dispersing throng.
King streut ia then in a blaze, and tho many color
ed lamps in the drug btorea throw a subdued mel
low light upon tho sidewalk that almost rivala the
moonlight. Although our promenado ia not as
wide aa could be desire-, yet it ia woll paved, and
with caro all collision- may bo avoided. It is do
cidedly the best wo have, and tho patronage be
stowed upon it shows plainly tho appreciation in
? which it is hold by the community.
No recreation is moro hoalthy and pleasant than
an evening- stroll upon King Btroot, and it ia.por
haps, fortunato that ?ill who wish aro unable to
indulgo in this gratification, or tho City Fathers
I would have to widen tlio sidewalk for their accom
! modation. To confirmed bachelors and young
men who aro opposed to matrimony, we would
suggest ono word of advice : Tako at least an
occasional walk on King street, and if tho bright
? anti beautiful faces aeon there do not tom it thom
i to turn Bowk-iota, thoy will havo to die in their
folly. Thore ?a no hope for them.
Soibee Musicale.-There wan a large and very
1 select audi-iico at the Hall again last night. Tbo
Tableaux Vivants arc decidedly popular, and we
arc not surprised at this; for wo do not remember
? ever to have seen such an union of grace, beauty
j and loveliness as here prcoent themselves nightly
to the viow of tho onraptured spectators. Each
tableau appeared to surpass all that proceded it,
but tho palm doubtless bolong, to "Raphael's
Studio," which achioved tho most brilliant triumph,
and was encored again and yet again.
The twenty minutes intermission was properly
improvod by the audience. Music aud pootry aro
all very well, but tho innor man bas bis claims,
and tho elegant array in tho lower ball showed that
tho presiding ladies had made ampio preparations
for a duo recognition of said claims.
Next carno tbo concert. "Infelice" from Er
nani, was sung with much oxprosaion by one of
our best amateurs. La F'tUe du Regiment, by the
lady violinist and piano accompaniment, pleased
very much, and waa oncorod ; but the lateness of
tbo hour proven?s our noticing all tbo pcrTor
?n-ncea in. detail. Everything went off admirably.
Tho ladies havo boon urged to continuo theso
exhibitions a fow nights'longer, and yielding to
theso friendly solicitations, tboy lune consented to
accommodate the pubhc again to-night.
Tent- Vebein_After a long vacation, tbo Turn
ers have rc-comraonced their rogular fortnightly
evening entertainments. Tho programmo oponed
with a song, rondored in fix?t rato stylo by a num
ber of good woll-drilled Turnor voices, doing cred
it to their precoptor, Professor Hoff-ian.
Tho prologuo, celebrating tbo re-opening of the
theatrical ontcrtainments, was a fino picco of me
trical composition, written for the occasion by Mr.
Vooleb. It was listened to with much attention,
and fully appreciated by tho icstbctical portion of
tbo audience.
Tho main feature of tho evening was a five-act
drama, "Marie Anne oder ein Weib aus dem
Volke." Tbero being a year's interval between the
first and second acts, wo deomod it most condu
cive to tbo interests of tho Daily News to leavo
beforo tbo curtain rose for tbo second act.
Mur.L-it'fj band played the interludos.
Um.'ED States Distbict Co__.t, Novembor 22,
Hon. UEO. S. Bryan presiding.-Tho caso of Mrs.
Mary IIaut vs. DeCottes & Salas was continued.
Tho witnesses for tbo rospondouta wore examined.
In tbo course of tbo investigation many questions
of law wore raised and discussed by tho opposing
partieB at some length. Tho further bearing of tbo
case will bo continued to-day at 11 A. M.
Mayo-'s Comvr, Novembor 22.-A moagro docket
nnd a slim audienco was on band boforo his Honor,
and tbo gratified looks with which tbo pago was
scanned showed the appreciation of tbo compli
ment.
A sour-looking darkey was cbargod with raising
a row in a ball room, but aa no prosecutors ap
poarcd ho was discharged with a warning to danco
and not fight in future, as there was a timo for all
things.
A wife-mauling caso was brought up for adjust
ment, but tho partios gavosuoh a coloring to their
statcmonts that it was difficult to decido who was
tbo most to blame, and thoy were referred to a
Magistrate to acttlo tbo difficulty.
One of thoso unfortunate characters who cannot
control their curiosity, and will look into a bottle,
was picked tip in a collapsed etato on a door stop.
It was decided that ho was drunk, but ho said bo
was only trying to collect, his thoughts. Tbo
Mayor gavo bim a subjoot for consideration moro
worthy of hiB attention, by charging bim $5 for his
want of thought.
The Exe __nd Ear.-Bead Dr. Gardner'a ad
vortisomont.
The attention of real estate owners is called to
the advertisement of tbo City Treasurer respect ing
city taxes.

plants for decoration, will do well to notice tho ad
vertisement of S. Webb, florist mid gardener,
whoso long oxporionc? in thal business eminently
?pialifle'i bim to give gonoral Batisfaction. and at
reasonable terms.
Special to the L.vdies.- At Mr?. S. J. Cotch

can bo found tho largest and most dioico selection
of "millinery" in tho city, and at the lowe st prices.
Ladies buying for the country will do well to call
and oxamino before purchasing elsewhere.
Particular attention given to country orders.
Diiuo Stores.-A traveller, passing through the
strccta of our city for tho first timo, from tho vast
number of drug stores, would como to tho very
natural conclusion tb.it oura i:i a very unhealthy
city. But appearances aro dccoiti'ul. People hero
do not buy moro phvsic linn they do in othor
places; and as regards the hygicno of C'liarlcston,
wo challongc comparison with any city, North or
South. Still tho fact romains. Drug stores maro
you in tho faco at cvoiy turn. Chemists-, phar
maceutists, druggists and pharmacopolists arc
as thick as blackberries. Just think ol' it-thorn
are not loas than thirty of these interesting catab
UBhinonts in our city, and tho cry is, 'Still they
come."
Direct Importation.-We are much pleased to
