The mere announcement of the fact would j st once excite attention in musical circles, bat when it is known that aside from its other merita, its objects is charity, and that too of the holiest | character, " for the benefit of the widows and or? phans," we 'opine that the Hibernian will be filled to overflowing, and the proceeds be a proof that music and charity are ruling motives with the ! public. The principles of tho Odd Fellows are too I well known to need comment, and the orphans ef Marion Xodge No. 2, will find that their guardians [ -will faithfully perform their duty. Previous to the | war they had an agency in this city, and did a large business, paving all their lopses punctually, which fact can be certified to by a number of our most respectable merchants. They stand now as well as they did then; Ravine loot by the war (by I judicious management) only fourteen thousand dollars in Confederate securities and currency. The advantage gamed by insuring in this compa? ny is that, being a mutual one, all yearly policy? holders participate in the profits, and are entitled to a vote in its direction, without any liability what? ever. This alone is worthy of consideration. Last jyear they declared a dividend to policy-holders of forty per cent., returning to them nearly one-half their prerninm. Mr. J. L. HONOUR, at No. 8 Broad street, is their agent, and is ready to redeem any outstanding dividend scrip of the company in pay? ment of premiums. A word to the wise is suffi? cient. Tbe spring has always been considered the proper time to remove all rubbish, garbage, or filth, which in ?ur climate would tend to produce sickness, and in order that this practice may be rigidly observ? ed, it has been customary for the city authorities to send some of the Police sergeants on a tour of inspection throughout the city. The fires are as frequent, and the results as disastrous, bat the energy of old Charleston has not been destroyed, and ibo re? building now in progress on King street proves that the promenade of the city will not long be disgraced by rains. The late fife in Victoria Bange completely destroyed one house, and se? riously damaged others, but the workmen are al? ready en the spot, and though the scaffolding offers some impediment to the passers, it is a sign of progress that compensates for the temporary inconvenience offered to travel.
