Mil. FALL TU A UK.
Puring (lie decudo Immediately preceding
the win-, Charleston did it largo nnd lucrativo
business. Her linrbor was lilied with ship?

other purls; mid in return were freighted with
bules ot'cosily merchandise for our jobbers and
importers. Our banks had n large capital ut
their di- pe: ul, which was liberally mid judi?
ciously used for thc accommodation of our
merchants, und Ibo coustnnt extension of thc
npliere of thc commerce of Charleston.
With tho commencement of I he war, and Iho
enforcement of thc blockado, all tho wheels of
this oxtonsive and perfectly constructed piece
of commercial mechanism necessarily slopped.
The mainspring was not deranged; thc cnrlh
wes ready as ever "to yield her increase;"
Inbor, emu I ucl eil on thc beat organizad system
tu be found any where in. the world, was nura,
mid in full operation; but the balance wheel
waa disordcrod-tho motive power was there,
hut could not bc.utilized.
Oraduiilly tho.whola machinery ot trade fell
?lilo decay. Al tho close of thc war, old and
time-worn channels had become obliterated,
and for a while it seemed as though the whole
elaborate organism had to bc re-constructed.
Thc well-known laws of- trade seemed lo have
lost their force. Demand and supply no longer
preserved their wonted equipoise. The lucr
ehs ms were nearly as numerous ns thc consum?
ers. There was a desi iii of -gonda all over thc
lalo Confederacy. The articles ordinarily con?
sidered necessaries had become luxuries; and
in thc li rsi reaction upon the terrible privation
enforced by the war, every av nil able means
was nt unce excliangod for provisions and cloth?
ing of a character somewhat better than wc
hail been compelled to bo content with during
tho Iwo or three yenrs immediately preceding.
Si ores were opened everywhere. A fortunate
few look advantage of this Hood-tide, aud some
uf i hem ut least, reaped rich harvests of gold,
silver und greenbacks.
This factitious activity or trade in Hie South
deceived the nicrohants of thc North. Instead
ol' Viewing it ns thc dying flicker of tho'expir?
ing light, ono last deceptive gin ro, and thin all
darkness, (hey ignorantly considered it a fair
index ol' ibe tiuunciul condition of tho South?
ern States. They soon, however, found their
mistake, but not without paying dearly for tho
experience. Tho country was indeed exhaust?
ed; there was neither niouey nor u surplus of
products convertible into currency. Not only
this, bul lhere was, moreover, a universal want
uf horses, cattle, and hogs; of seeds, fertilizers,
ninl farming utensils; and, ns a matter of course,
of ready money with which lo procuro these
essentials, ur lo curry un agricultural opera?
tions willi hired labor.
Thu mureil of a hostile army liad destroyed
ibo railroads; publie travel hoing (luis inter?
rupted, our city jobbers nutt their country cus?
tomers found it difficult lo keep iu communica?
tion. " Largo numbers thus went'to New York
and to other pointe, and established new rela?
tions, mid many ol our merchants ' found too'
,late that they had not taken this new slate of
things lulu due considera I ion, und n large stock
of goods, purchase d ut thc high prices I hen cur?
rent, rem n i ned on I he shelves,
i- i *
--j ii addilion.lo nil these drawbacks, thc crops
[staring tho hut two years fell far short, ol' the
yield anticipated. The dcrauged system of
labor, together willi our political troubles, have
..largely impaired our credit and depreciated
I our acclivities; intorest has ranged nt unprece?
dented high rales, nnd money., even un those
terms, has Leen almost impossible to obtain;
and, to complete thc long iliad of our commer?
cial woes, all Ibis while, taxes, internal, Stale
anil .unieipal, have been increasing, from
year lo year, as hy a geometrical ratio, and
havo made less tho little thal had boen left us
j out of the wreck of our former prospority.
. .Notwithstanding, however, all these depress?
ing influences, we are happy to know that
Charleston has been steadily progressing in
tho great work of commercial reconstruction.
Her railroads, by the unparalleled energy of
officers and directors, were promptly placed in
running order; her wharves rebuilt at con?
siderable expense; her commercial relations
willi distant ports havo been resilmed; old lines
hove been re-established, and new ones added.
Although our hanking facilities still fall far
nhort of the flush times before thc war, we
liar a at least made a commenoemcnt. True,
their resources are limited, and inadequate to
the ''Accommodation" of all who are "hard up,"
i we think wc havo reason to expect OR enlarge?
ment of their sphere at an early period.
Nearly all our old friends may again be
found on Hoyne, Meeting, King and East Bay
streets, and pol a few new one* in addition.
TL ile slocks, though very prudently not as
large as I ribo, are well selected, and oflford the
fullest variety-ample to ali tho demands "of
thc trade.
- Although tho depreciation of cotton cannot
itt itself be considered an advantage lo this
part of the country, still ita coincident effect
of lowering the price of good:), must conduce
indiroctly to tho advantage of thc trade, as a
in no li larger consumption may confidently be
expected. Indeed, not cotton goods alone, but
merchandize of every description is much lower
now Hinn two years ago. The crop now har?
vesting is superior to any we have had since
lb'iii); and our merchants, wc think, havo
every ronson lo antioipato a fair averago fall
trade.
.-. From nn inspection of the extensive maga?
zines in Hayne and Meeting streets, it would
appear that our importera and jobbers havo
provided themselves fully for such n domand.
Their stores are filled with thc products of
every variety of goods, domestic and foreign
Our niorchants, sumo of whom have been
engaged in this trade over half a century, have
(loeumnlalcd a Iarg6 store of valuable experi?
ence. They know the want? of the several
suctions of country, tributary to thia markot ;
and their former customers will find it aa
eyer to their interest to visit the good old city
