COHONEB'S INQUEST.-Coroner Whiting-held an inquost yesterday ou the body of Joseph Higgins, a colored youth about twenty years?] of age, who was found dead at No. 33 King street. Higgins had attended a dance? the night prenons, and bad over exerted binaself, which produced excessive hemorrhage of the lungs, causing his death. The jury rendered a verd ict in accordance with the tacts. Mr. McCradyconcluded his argument and Hon. J. B. Campbell was heard contr?. MAYOB'8 COURT.-The number of applicants for justice yesterday morning was not dimin? ished, and a goodly number of delinquents were brought to the bar of justice and sentenced. Five cases of drays running without a license were roported, aud the owners charged $20 for their violation of the law. One of these cases proved, on reference to the books, to have a forged license badge, but the city ordinances had not provided for this crime, and he was merely fined for the first offence. The Mayor complimented Private Casey for his energy and vigilance in detecting ?he fraud. The badge was numbered 68-134, but was badly exe? cuted. Jas. Robinson, a colored school boy, endeav? ored to do a small sum in subtraction by steal? ing a few cocoanuts, but was detected and sent to study the principles of arithmetic and law for ten days. A number of the disciples of Bacchus, who jiookod on the .wine when it wa? red, and mixed it with whiskey, were found in a collapsed state, and charged $5 nach for medical advice and'attendance. A number of goats, which were found hi the streets, were ordered to be killed or deelrdyed. Two cows taken np for the sama offence, were fined $5 each, which the owners were compelled to pay before their bovines were restored. In one case, however, the owner stated that her husband was in city employ, and she could not pay unle'ss the city responded. This being proved, her fine was remitted, bot she waa advised to keep her animal in bounds. A SUNKEN BOAT.-A sail boat, painted white, waB noticed in a sunken condition on Monday ? afternoon, near Hobcaw, Christ Church Parish. | It was supposed that she may" have become in that condition by tho lato stormy weather. No further particulars have been ascertained con? cerning her or those that may have been on board. ABBEST OF MOLE THIEVES.-On the 25th ult. j twe mules were stolen from the plantation of Dr. Thomas Sim, near Rantowle's. Informa? tion of the thoft was given to Lieutenant Hen? dricks, and the parties who bought the mules were discovered by officers Hogan and Gray, and the mules recovered. THE WORKHOUSE.-It may be considered definitely settled that the Workhouse is to ho an . institution of Charleston.. Mayor Burns has frequently intimated that he would compel offenders to work for their living, and expiate their crimes by benefitting the city. Five prisoners were sent'to tho work house yester? day, and Mr. Wilton P. Poulnot, an ex-sergeant of the police, installed as keeper. Tho prison? ers uere furnished with shovels and brooms, and wilr*be made' to clean some of ti.e dust of ages which has settled thickly on the floors and cages. The building will require some re? modelling before it can be made serviceable, but will still serve as a temporary prison for the Iaw-broakers, who can be made useful in various ways. THE FBANBXTN-S?BEET. COLOBED HIGH SCHOOL.-From the February report of this school, kindly furnished by the principal,'Mr. William W. Taylor, we condense the following facts : There are now six hundred and ninety Svo pupils enrolled; three hundred aud'bix boys; throe hundred and eighty-nine girls, and ? vo adults, being an increase of twenty-nino ?ince the last report*. This school was openod ja the 9th day of July, 1867, in the-old Marine Hospital, which had been -purchased- by the Protestant Episcopal (Freedmen's) Commis? sion. Tho Average attendance of * scholars is ive hunched and fourteen, about severity-six ier cent, of the whole numberj'many are regu ar attendants, and show remarkable pro iciency. Their studies embrace arithmetic, ?eography, grammar,'writing, Ac; tho girls jeing also taught needle-work. Though tho ichool is nominally free, a small tuition fee of ?hirty-flve cents per week is demanded of those Thone, circumstances admif'of paying. POLITICAL MEETINGS.-The Republican vo? tera of the respective warda of the city are no? tified to meet this evening at varions places, for the purpose of fleeting delegates from each ward to a district nominating convention. ABRAH-NA-POGUE attracted a large audience to the theatre last night, and all were delighted I afc the manner in which' that highly sensational drama of "Ould Ireland" waa placed, upon the boards. To-night the same play is to-be re? peated, positively for the last time. ^Griffith* | Gaunt," and other novelties, are in active pre? paration, f j A WANTON OUTRAGE.-A few nights since some unknown person broke into the Palmetto Engine House, on Anson-street, destroyed their signal lamp and out the suction hose. The lamp bad -been recently purchased, and had hardly been in position a week. On Monday night the Pioneer Engine House, on-Market street", was also broken' open, and the same damages inflicted, the lamp being completely destroyed. It,is a new thins in the hiatory.of tho Charleston Fire Department to have such dastardly outrages perpetrated, ? and, if the uu'screants should be arrested, they will find that tho strong arm of the law will impose a punishment that will not be soon forgotten. ? THE CHABLESTON YACHT CLUB_Agreeably to the call sent forth, a number of gentlemen interested in the now national pastime ?of j yachting assembled last evening at the rooms above Dayton's Restaurant on Meeting-street, and formed a temporary organisation.
