The Sunday school pupila of the above Church, with their Superintendent, Mr. John G. Milnor, teaohers'and friends, repaired to. Payne'n farm yesterday afternoon, to continue their annual celebration began in the church on last Sunday. Mr. William 9. Henerey was mister of ceremonies, at the corner of Line and Meeting-streets, where he saw the little ones safe in Graham's Omnibusses, in which they were comfortably conveyed to the pleas? ure ground. Here the committee, consisting of Messrs. William G. Whilden, chairman, Zim? merman Davi?, H. B. Olney, A. J. Salinas, J. E. Burk, George W. McKeever and A. Prince, and Miss Olney, MTP. Stocker, Mrs. Steedman, Mrs. Shepherd, and Mrs E. H. Jackson, and Misses Whilden, Heriot, Shepherd and Brodie, were in attendance to arrange matters. While the preliminaries for dinner were being arranged, the children played games, rambled in the woods, Ac. Several paper balloons, six, eight, and fifteen feet high, made for the ocoassion by Mr. B. M. Alex? ander, were seut up by him, and were eagerly watohed until they floated ont of sight. The dinner bell rang, and the teachers and scholars assembled in front of the house and then marched to the tables well supplied with good things, of which they bountifully partook. While there, Ber. Dr. Winkler addressed them in some appropriate remarks. After surfeit? ing themselves with enjoyment, they returned to the city highly delighted with the pleasant day that they had spent. The Spring-street Church nnd Northern Methodist Preachers. TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEWS. During my late abaenca from the city, there appeared iu your journal T. W. Lewis and A. Webster, denying the statement of my circular, that their church obtained and held Spring street Church and the McKee estate by mili? tary authority. Their communication wears on its face the expression of injured innocence, and the holy purposes of ambassadors of pesos and tenth. They sax they told not by the military, but by tender to him (Lewis,) by a vote taken at s "largely attended and duly notified public meeting." Shades of Blackstone I and Mar? shall ! Titles to property by "vote of public meeting 1" What will our learned bar say to this mode of getting titles to property ? They have usually oalled for "signing, Bealing and delivering," by "trastees,!' of church property. The bayonet is the only other mode, unless these men propose "spirit rapping." The trastees of my church esy there never was a meeting of their board for the purpose of giving their cousent, and that consent was never asked or given for Mr. Lewis or Mr. Webster to nee their church. Mr. W. published in bis own paper the fact that he ko v the use of trustees; for he says, the "tro//es" of my church "rented" it to the "bo Ma ' "rickety" "ohaos' of the "Confed? eracy," and it promised to repair; "but like the lest of ita promises, it never fulfilled." The truth of this, or the want of that virtue, is proven by the workmen, who say the Con? federacy paid for the replacement of the roof and other repairs. The abusive lei ma be uses only give illustration to their cry for "sectional and national peace." He had better learn it from U. J. Chase, who presides over the temple of strife (tho Courthouse) in his noble speech over the graves of the Confederate and Federal dead at Magnolia. This Northern church makes its own commentary on its love of truth sud peace. There is no plea of ignorance for its brimes against both. Did they get our ohureh by military power ? My friends in the country, for whom I write, were deprived of the city papers till tbe war closed, do not know the facts, which every in? telligent man in the city knows, for they read the history m the daily papers. To the point before ns. Not holding by the . "trustees," did these Northern preachers pos? sess and keep by the "bayonet.* The first person Mr. Lewis callad upon after arriving in Charleston was Dr. G. S. P., then living in No. 117 Coming-street. He says Mr. Lewis produced en "order from the War De? partment for bim to seize all churches with? out pastors," As., Ac,, which fie (Mr. Lewis) regretted to do. A friend hands me this from the Charleston Courier, of date of Jone 1,1805: VI bold is trust for their use (tbe colored people) tbs throe churches they occupy, by an order from the War Department, sod have .erred them ss pastor for nearly three months, and propose to continue amongst them. (Signed) T. W. LEWIS." Nearly three months before that, there ia an advertisement in the same paper, date of March ll. 1865, where he asserts the same re? sponsibility. The above agrees with the spirit and temper gtheir church. The Secretary of War gives o following order of date November' 80,1863: "That all th? houses of worship belonging to the M. E. Church South, in whtoh a loyal min? ister, who has been appointed by a Io>sl bish? op, does not now officiate, are hereby placed at tbe disposal of Ber. Bishop Ames," (Northern bishop.) M My Church came ander that description. Mr. Lewis saya in his notice above that be held by order of the War Department. There ia now before me a military order da? ted November 18, 1867, refusing to give ua back our church, and refers to a former act by which we were deprived of it. These men, with seeming injured innocence, should ask with Donna Julia: "Antonia, where's my pocket handkerchief V As to ih e McKee estate, they deny the "bay onet" aa depriving ua of it by s special plead? ing disgusting to those who know tba shifts taken before the provost court in this city, which the citizens never can forget, to deprive as of it. Our church carried the decision of tb? first military court, by appeal, to th? higher bayonet authority, but the bayonet save it to them. BOT. L. C, Loyal, a moro truthful man the etty cenaos furnish, tens me that, in pur? chasing back taring-street Church from Mr. Lewis, the military trastee, Mr. Lewis requir? ed, st first- besides the money, titles to the McGee ?state and also to old Bethel from our ohurob. .;*? Oar friends in th? ooaotry should gnow that when Mr. Lewis was sworn in the trial of tbs abor? ease, he said Jon oath, that he bsd "fulfill? ed his promises to our church." Old Brother B., to whom with others Mr. Lewis, with tears ia bis eyes, wheo he first game to tho ?itv irving to get the members co be reconciled to his min? istry, saying ho only ?ame to "try to save their sonia," and that wheo the Soots)ats preacher* returned he "would give up the property ano member? to them," when he was sworn es above. Lot every no read this "plan," and he cannot doubt bul hat it covers ?ll such onsen as the McKee state. They say of tho colored people, as they Wt is, "that, they were very respectable and law biding." True, "one grain of wheat in nuil ons of chaff." Why should they be led off rora tboso fountains of "respectability" now pened for them ? I fear they nave lost ground ince. I hopo the colored pcoplo will not for? et the lessons taught them by us in their new sllowfihip. I have done wi lb those men. They attacked ay circular three times, first, personally; se ond, in their own paper of May 19; then in ours of 291b. ult. I now dismiss them. They aay cry "peace" as they stir up strife, speak if "respectability" as they degrade, profess loncsty as Iago, and boast their church wealth H Butler can ot spoons, as much os they please or me.
