?General Don Platt Is not Jubilant over tho
Republican success in Ohio. Ho writes to his

never was a fight In Ohio so fiercely contested

Another Strike.
The Union T.Ongahorciiioii are ui-mn on u
strike. Threo weeks ago thoy demanded
Higher wages, and failed to carry their point,
for the good reason that plenty of men could
be found to do tho work at a lower price.
Now thoy dechiro that thoy will not help to
load any vossol until a stcvodoro who has
been discharged by his employer is restored
to his place. In plain words, these long
shoremen intend to dictate, if thoy can,
what wogos shall bo paid, and who shall,
and shall not bo employed, by tho ship
masters and agents at this port. '
This foolishness can only bo stopped In ono
way. If the employers give an inch , the
strikers will take an ell. . Thoy must hold
fast and refuse to mako a hnlr's-breadth of
concession, for H they recede now thoy will
glvo tho signal for new exnctlons which it
will he impossible to endnre.
, We believe that laborers can ho had to
take the places of tho strikers; but, whether
they can or ' cannot, tho employers would
lose more by giving way than by quietly
Btandlng their ground. Fifty or sixty able
bodied laborers are advertised for this
morning by Messrs." William Roach & Co.
They Avili be paid liberally, and will doubt
less bo easily had.
Tiic Political Year.
With tho coming month of November tho
series of political elections for the present
year will bo closed. In the results of the
elections which have been hold up to this
time there has not been much variety, al
though Radicalism has received more than
one sturdy blow, and the National Democra
cy have gained new and decided advantages.
New Hnmpshirod letl oil' in March, electing
n Governor and members of tho State Leg
islature. As usual of late years, tho Re
publicans were successful. Connecticut fol
lowed in April, electing a Republican Gov
?or nnd securing a Republican majority In
h branches of the Legislature. In July
- tho Virginia elections woro hold. Tho Dem
ocrats made no party nominations, nud sup
ported the ticket of tho moderate Republi
cans or Anti-Radicals?-the . Democratic j
vote electing tho Governor nntl a large ma
jority in the State Senate and House. TIiIb
was, to all intents nnd purposes, n crushing
d?font of the bitter-end Radicals. In Au
gust the Conservatives or Anti-Radicals
swept Tennessee, defeating Stokes nnd elect
ing Senter nnd a majority of the State Leg
islature. Again were tho bitter-enders
smitten hip nnd thigh, although in Tennes
see, us in Virginia, the Radical candidates
had on their side tho whole oillcinl influence
of the State and Federnl Governments. In
September the Republicans were victorious
in Vermont and Maine, which was noth
ing new or strange. California, in the
same month, elected a new Legislature,
and the Democrats obtained a largo ma
jority In that body. In tho lato judicial
elections the Democrats were again suc
cessful by a thumping vote. Pennsyl
vania, Ohio and Indiana followed during I
the present month of October, and- in each
State the Republicans prevailed. But hi1
Pennsylvania the Radical majority was cut
down from 28,898 in 1868 to 4696 in 1869,
and in Ohio, from 41,428 in 1868 to about
8000 In 1869. On tho whole, the Democrats
have done very well, In spite of their occa- I
slonal blunders of management and policy.
Elections are to bo held next month in
Now York, Now' Jersey, Now Hampshire,
Massachusetts, Illinois, Minnesota, Wiscon
sin, Mississippi, Maryland and Texas. In
Now York the election takes place on Tues
day next, and tho officers ' to < bo elected
are a Secretary of State, a Comptroller, a
Treasurer, an Attorney-General, a Stato En
gineer and Surveyor, a Canal Commissioner,
an Inspector of Stato Frisons, two Judges
of tho Court ol Annpnia *.*ai**
the Supremo Court and a full Legislature.
Tho Democratic majority at the elections fdr !
Secretary of Stato two years ago was 47,930;
but the Radicals are working desperately
hard to outgoneral thoir opponents. In
nominating General Frnuz Sigel for Secre
tary of Stato and Horace. Grceloy for Comp-. |
trollor, they mako a high bid for tho German
vote, and that of any lambs who may bo
Willing to stray from the Democratic fold.
There Is no doubt, however, that the Demo
crats-will, its usual, carry the day, although
the elections hinge moio upon local and
personal than national questions.
Illinois doos not this year elect State offi
cers, but on Tuesday next will elect mem
bers of a Stato Constitutional Convention.
This convention will determine whether the I
word "white" shall bo stricken from tho!
clause In relation to suffrage. In tho Legis
lature the Republicans have a majority; but |
the Democrat* claim that in tho constitu
tional convention the strength of tho two
parties will bo about equal. On the same
day Chicago elects a new city government.
Thero nro two tickets In the field?ono tho
regular Republican ticket, and the other the
CltlzeriB' ticket, supported by both Republi
cans and Democrats for tho prjrposo of j
breaking up tbo corrupt Radical ring.
Tho Massachusetts election for Stato ofll
cere and members of the Legislature will
also toko placo on Tuesday next The cam
paign has acquired additional interest from
tho prominenco givon tho temperance ques
tion, nnd from tho fact that tho Labor Re
form party has ontered the field and noml
noted o ?eparato ticket. Thon is overy
pros|KJct that tho new inovcmuut will cut
deeply Into the Radical majority, which lust
year, for President, was 77,0fi'J, Tho Hc
publicaus have ronotninntcd Williun Clallin,
tho present Governor. Tlie Democratic
candidate is John Quiticy Adams. Tlie
Labor Reform candidate* Is Bdwln M; Chhm
hcrlin, the son of a rich hotel-keeper in Bos
ton. A special election w'll also be held in
the Seventh Congressional District, to 1)11
the vacancy cnuscd by the resignation of
Secretary Hunt well. The Republican candi
date is George M. Brooks, a brother-in-law of
Attorney-General Ilonr. Tim Democratic
candidate is Lu?retl S?lslullStull, of Newton.
On Tuesday, also, Minnesota will elect
Stato ofllccrs nnd members of tho Legisla
ture. There are three tickets in the field?
tho Republican, Horuoo Austin for Gover
nor: the Democratic, George L. Otis for Gov-i
crnor; nnd tho Temperance, Rev. David
Cobb foi* Governor. The strong point of the
canvass is opposition to tho tariff, to which
tho low price of wheat is declared to bo due.
In 1868 the Republican majority was 15,470.
On tho stirtio day Wisconsin elects a full
State ticket and the members of the Legisla
ture. Tho Republican candidate for Governor
is Lucius Fairchild, and tiio Democratic
Charles D. Robinson. The Republicans lind
laatymr, for President, a majority of 24,1-17,
and will undoubtedly be successful this year.
Mnrylnnd elects on Tuesday the members
of the Genoral Assembly, a State Comp
troller and County Commissioners. The
present Legislature is composed entirely of
Democrats, who ufo .expected to have, as
usual, a majority bf about 30,000.
Now Jersey elects on Tuesday a portion of
the State Senate, and all the members of the
House of Representatives. This gallant
State may bo counted on for a Democratic
majority. New Hampshire has a special
election on tho sumo day upon tho question
of ? Constabulary law. ? change or 2500
votes would glvo tho Stute to the Demo
crats, and tho Republicans feol that they
tread on delicate ground. The Constabu
lary law may cause their defeat.
On Tuesday, the 30th Novcmbor, Missis
sippi votes upon tho Reconstruction consti
tution ndoptod in May, 1868. Tho disabili
ties, test oath, and loaning the credit of tho
State clauses are submitted to a separate
vote. This is the second Reconstruction
constitution submitted to tli? people, the
first hnviug been rejected. At the same
time State officers, Congressmen and mem
bers of tho Legislature will be elected.
Thoro uro two tickets in the field. One is
the out-and-out Radlcnl ticket, and the
other the Conservative tlckot. James L
Alcorn is the Radical candidate ami Judge
Dont the' Conservative candidate for Gover
nor. The parents of General Alcorn wcro
originally South Carolinians. General Alcorn
is a renegade Confederate, who, after tho
close of tho war, "accepted the situation."
Judge Dont is a brother-in-law of General
Grunt, nnd an anto-bellum Democrat. He
resides and owns iandod ostalo lu Missis
sippi. ^
.The Stato of Texas closes the elections of
tho year. The people will voto on the adop
tion of tho Reconstruction constitution,
adopted In Austin in Juno last, and wilf
olect Stato officers and Congressmen. In
1868 a proposed constitution wop rejected;
Tho. election takes place on November 80.
There arc three tickets in tho Held?Radlcnl,
Conservative and Democratic. General
Davis, the Radical candidate for Gover
nor, nnd General Hamilton, the Conserva
tive candidate, aro in favor of adopting tho
constitution. This is opposed by tho straight
out Democrats. There is some doubt of the
regularity of the Democratic nominations,
and tho chances favor tho "third party,"
against whom President Grant and his Cabi
net are using all tho'errors and inlluonces
of official d?capit?t ion and public plunder.
General Hamilton is an Alubnmian, and an
original Union man.
After all the talk about the Suez Canal
and its effect upon tlie commercial relations
of tho civilized world, it would bo somewhat
of a shock if it should he found wanting
with refcronco to tho very object for which
it was built In Alexandria tho confidence
felt concerning the opening of tho canal for
useful traffic is said tobe diminishing; but
what 1b more uncomfortable is that the agent
of a Liverpool linn, sent out expressly to
survey and roport, says that tho depth
of water throughout) the canal Is very
unequal. A light vessel sailing in it thr-.

TnB Tribune says thai the Administra
tion, in the en iv of iiutterfleld, as in pre
vious instances, has shown its d?termina
tion to have its officials "above even the
suspicion of,evil." Has Mr. Greeley forgot
*oU that Daniel B, Sickles is the official who
represents the United States at Madrid? Of
course it may bo said for ono thing that
Sickles is "above suspicion," inasmuch as
his "evil" is beyond all dispute.
