THE REAL INTERESTS OF THE LABORING
Who Give the Vote? ?nd "Who Enjoy
TO TUE EDITOR OF THE NEWS.
It would bc well for all those who claim the
thc name of "laborers" as exclusively their
own, to watch weil the benevolent Howards
who are professing to do so much for them.
Watch them well, my good friends, for they
intend you no good, and will wind up the
whole business as the spider does the fly.
Inquire particularly whether in their pri?
vate lives they devote much- of their time or
money to schemes ol' benevolence, to improve
the condition of those around them. Do they
seek out the poor and give of their substance
to relieve them ? Do they seem to find pleas?
ure in ailing their fellow men with their time
or their lioney ? If so, respectant! love them
they deserve your contidence and will never
betravyoj. if, on the other hand, they arc
liquor swillcrs and idlers, carefully keeping
their own hands from rho work they require ol'
others, then be sure Io icatch, them-they are
nothing but spiders singing songs to the flies !
The plain people of the country are very con?
fiding, too apt to trust in all the professions that
are made to them. Ii they will take the ad?
vice of an old soldier in the bat.les of the world,
they will trust in none of them any farther
than they are proven by corresponding works.
If these associations are good for nothing else,
they are capital ropes to tie np the voters at
the time of an election, and then, my good
friends, who is elected ? Will it be the com?
mon laborers who get the lat offices ? Not a
bit of it ! But their heads will do for the be?
nevolent office-hunters to walk upon, in order
to get them for themselves. Watch, as well as
?rav, for you are in danger ol being cut up for
The Union Leagues answered very well for
this for awhile. It was admirable to see how
the freedmen and their white allies were tied
together and marched to the polls, where they
were taught they would all be ruined ll they
did not vote the ticket with the pictures on it.
Well, they voted lt, and when they looked
around afterwards they found their benevolent
advisers all snugly In office-some with a sal?
ary of five thousand dollars a year, some with
six dollars per day, and so on, down to one
dollar and a half. Now comes another set of
spiders and tell the flies all this did them no
good-(very true !)-that they are still in dan- ,
ger-must have another election and put down
the "capitalists"-those cruel monsters that
won't poy the laborers, as they say. They pro?
pose now to have another lino t?iiic of it. Rome
more offices are wanted, and as the League is
played out, it will be best to change the "hame
and call it an "Association," to take care ol
the laborers ! Who is lt. my friends, who have
suddenly awaked to the duty of supplying your
wants ? Has any one of them ever supplied
your wtfcts heretofore ? If not, be sure to
walch them-they want your votes, and the
whole matter will end by giving them fat
offices, and they will leaveyou to "flounder in
the mud, as they did when they had you lied
up in the Leagues.
We were told that the "Leagues'' were to
save thc Ualon-very good things, so far as
that went-but if you will look around you
will find they have "saved" the speech-makers,
and no one else. If the freedmen will feel iu
their pockew they will find not a single dollar
that has been put there by the men they voted
f:?,"and they never will. They all see this
now. and aro done willi thc Leagues. Old rats
wfll be cautions about trusting any more to thc
same cats that have once deceived them. The
name of "cat" won't answer the purpose any
longer-calling it "Association," perhaps they
will go into the trap again.
This simile will do carry a little further.
What would become of thc private numbers,
if they were all caged up, like rats, and put
under the care of the cats t Now it will be
well to look about cautiously, and see if some?
thing of this sort is not in the wind. Once put
your name in their hands, and then you are
fairly roped, to be carried wherever the cats
choose to carry you.
The war taught us many a useful lesson,
and one of them is, not io "volunteer" too
soon; for vor will SOOD find you have become a
slave, and must consent to be kicked about by
the officers as they choose, or be shot. This ls
"volunteering," as many a poor fellow fourni
out to his sorrow: for some of them were shot
by the orders of their own dear officers, for no
other crime than wanting to see for a few days
their own suffering wives and children. This
ls the consequence of permitting yourself to
be tied up in civil- or military associations.
You are then no longer at liberty to make your
own contracts, with those who wish to em?
ploy you, but you must consult the "rules" to
see whether you may not be violating them in \
dolrg so. If you are an honest man, yon will ?
abide by those rules, even if you have to suf?
fer greatly; but are you sure that others will
do so, too? And if they do not, tho effect will
be, that whilst they act all thc work they :
want, upon terms which "have not trans- ]
plrcd," you must Ile still and groan with want, j
rather than falsify a pledge, which others
may use only as a screen for underhand trans?
actions, fi ill of profit to those who would not
permit you to take the same terms openly. 1
This is barely possible-look you to it.
Many years ago, a wily old merchant, in the ,
goodness and honesty of his heart, advise^} a i

would be best for them to hold certain articles '

sell for any less. This was agreed to. What <

Secondly. So far as the mechanical employ- ;
'icciS are concerned, it would be well for
tbA.;e "associations" to have a large infusion
of thc colored element, or the business will
fall entirely into their hands. The whites
must have the colored mechanics pledged, or
they will lind that white labor can be very i
easily dispensed with. There will be a very
large crack remaining open, if the field ls lett
free to them. Indeed, nothing could happen
so weU for them as for the white mechanics to
bind themselves up by "rules," so that they
would In all cases have" to consult them before
they could go to work, leaving the colored ,
man free to get work when and how he pleased. ,
Now, will the two races unite, cordially, for
mutual protection-will either race sincerely 1
believe that thc other cares very much tor any ! :
but themselves-and would it be good policy
for one to act without the other ? ' ,
This question, however, is not exclusively ,
for the mechanics, it is for thc dear field labor- "
ors also; they are more numerous, and have :
more votes. Take care of their rights, in?
deed! It is said that .-onie have grown rich I
by distributing thc charities of others amongst 1
thc poor. We are sure thal all those who have
recently shown so much interest in the labor?
er have met with an equal good fortune. All
these apostolic missionaries sent to us from :
the North are either now safely seated in lat
offices or arc trying to get them. The word
'.all" may be too comprehensive. There are '
some unpretending, unobtrusive ministers of
the Gospel, whose humble and useful lives :
should protect them from being included In so
general a remark. The politicians form the
class these reflections are Intended to tall
upon. They have como hereto plumier the
people, and it ls impossible to find In timm '
anything bul schemes to plunder both blacks
anil whites, and nothing could serve Hu ir pur?
poses better than to get them picdj/cd in any
form of association. Unco the holler is lieu,
they know well enough how to manage the
rest so that everything will run into their own
pockets. Will the people, both white ami
colored.be wise, and keep thc management of
their own business 'n their own hands ?
Thirdly, a good deal has boen said about
"capiuilists"-South Carolina "capitalists"
the necessity for protecting tho laboring
classes from them. Alas! what a mockery!
The misery that luis rallen upon tho once
wealthy people of South Carolina is not for
tongue to tell or pen to describe. They arc
enduring in silence Euch sufferings as the truly
great and good man must feel when not only
poverty Ad actual want weigh him down, but
insult and degradation add their 6harp Bli ogs
to his misfortunes. The Southern gentleman,
so long the type of all that is excellent in
human character, now finds himself obliged to
struggle with sheer tcanf, and to sec his wife
and daughters live destitute ol all that educa?
tion and habit have rendered almost necessary
to their existence. Some of them have lands
they can neither sell nor cultivate, whilst they
have debts they are too honorable to repudi?
ate, and which they are too poor to pay.
Are these the "capitalists' whose greed
is so rapacious that combinations must
bc formed to protect the laboring peo?
ple iroin them? If not, where are they?
Let thc office-holders speak, they know where
they are. Those strangers who have come
here amongst us, without one particle of
sympathy for the people, and have crawled
like snakes into the flower beds that, under
circumstances of insult and degradation, they
are lorcing the people out of their hard earn?
ings to cultivate for them, these arc the "capi?
talists/' and there are no others. In the once
rich and happy State of South Carolina. With
the rest, life is a hard struggle, and despera?
tion itself is continually goading them to pull
down the pillars of the temple, and perish with
those who mock at their calamities.
No one will quarrel with any honest efforts
to secure justice to the citizen, whether he be
called a '-laborer" or a "capitalist." But for
that species of vermin, that strive to destroy
the peace of society, by hypocritical appeals to
the masses, when the real object is to delmU
the people and destroy their independence, all
good people can only feel the most sovereign
Those who are now in power in this State
are usurpers, and nothing else. No length of
time, or change of circumstances, will ever
alter this unanimous verdict of the respectable
classes ot society. Those little expedients of
leagues and associations may serve a tcmper
arv, unholv purpose, but the handwriting will
still bo on the wall, and the day will come
when the native Sonth Carolinian will be the
ruler in his own house. The Chaldean has, in
other days besides the present, revelled in the
splendor of a holy temple-and history will
repeat itself, in the career of another Cyrus,
whose mission will be to humble the proud
usurper, and to restore to intelligence and
virtue the plaees from which they have been
driven by the brute force of ignorance and

unprincipled schemes, and denounced those
engaged in them. It has incurred thc hatred
and denunciation of those exposed, but at the
same time, has no doubt checked their extrava?
gance. But TUE NEWS has been no severer
than colored members of thc Legislature,
against some of the transactions of the gov?
