AFFAIRS ABOUND PENDLETON. [FBOM AN OCCASIONAL COBRBSFOSDZNT.] P?NDLETON, December 20. I think I have not written a line for our paper since our Wuterloo defeat at the late elections. We were somewhat reconciled to this defeat by the declarations and promises of the opposite party of reduction ol taxes and retrenchment generally. Have these promises been carried out ? Not one. The powers that be have not only not reduced fees, but have created new offices and officers to swallow np additional taxes on the people. Thank God, the negroes are feeling it up here to day. The collector said to mc: ikI have collected about one hundred and twenty dollars out ot them to-day, and I will sell every d-d negro out if he don't pay up." I remarked, that's brother Scott's work, boys. You did not ex? pect them to make you pay tax, of course. One remarked to me: "Mass George, I think I am too old to pay poll tax." I think so, too, Burnett, but it is saki you voted ihe Re? form ticket, hence Scott's minions nie on jon as they have been on mc to force me to pay a tax three times on the same properl v. But, Mr. Editor, it is too late to quarrel. They have got us on the bli), and will keep us there yet awhile, I fear. Look at our yoting friend Crlttenden's resolution, supporter! by aU the Reform party, and how summarily dis? posed of by the cormorants in power, Would lt not be better for the people of the Suite, Mr. Editor, for them to adjourn to the first of j April, even, and draw their daily allowance, than to legislate ? But a truce to politics. I sat down to write you about crops; the favorable fall lor the maturing of the cotton crop, the getting in, Ac, with the prevailing cold snap which is just upon us. We have had one of the most favorable falls for the maturing and gathering in of crops, especially cotton, that I, one ot the oldest inhabitants, have ever, experienced. Cotton has matured to the top bolls, with very little stained In the market. The favorable fall scison, with the forcing effects of fertil? izers, have done wonders for our up-country crop, and having as an agent of Wilcox, Gibbs & Co. sold several tons to our planters, I am delighted at the result. Nobody complains, "you have sold me an article that don't pay." As to the cold snap-why the good people of Charleston have no idea of what wc have experienced in the last few days in the way ol cold, aller our dellghtlul previous weather. On Thursday morning last, tho 22d, thermom? eter 26 degrees; thick clouds, with strong in? dications ol' snow; brushed off before night, but after dark clouded up again, and before 8 o'clock was snowing. Friday morning, snow from one io two inches deep, thermometer at 18 degrees. Saturday, 24lh, thermometer clown to 9 degrees; a light snow at night, and at sunrise, 25th, thermometer down to 8 de? grees. Monday, 2Glh, thermometer 26 degrees; and at night, when I write you, much more pleasant-up to 40 degrees. I can't recollect that I have experienced as cold a spell since the "Cold Saturday" io I think it was Some men yet living In our Slate recollect that day, no doubt. Tuesday morning, 27tb, ther? mometer down to 22 degrees. Early sown wheat looked well before tiie freezing weather sec in, but very much lia? been sown so late, I fear it has been caught in the sprout and killed. S. THE QR ASE CENT!.'AZ HOTEL. Among the most striking types of the pro? gress of the age, is the development of palatial hotel enterprises. New York has Just ushered in a new triumph in this particular. The Grand Central Hotel, situated on Broadway, midway between the up town and down town hotels, rears its inagulflcent marble front and swat- f lows up almost an entire block. Only opened, j as it were, on yesterday, it has become already < crowded with guests, from every part of the I country. As you enter its magnificent portals, the brilliant, coup d'ccil exceeds any thing yet produced in this country or the world. One becomes absolutely confused with the sur? rounding magnificence. It has to be seen to ? be appreciated. The Grand Central bears ii about thc same relation to other first-class ho-11 tels as the Great Eastern did to other first-class ocean steamers. With between one and two" hundred rooms more than any other hotel on this continent, the Grand Central is the colos? sus of the age. In all the appointment?, every-1 ii thing is fully up to the mark for a first-class 11 New York city hotel. The carpets, furniture, parlors, linen; and all the cf cefrr,?, are gorge? ous. The genial proprietor, Mr. II. L. Powers, of ] hotel renown," whose rcmarkabl? administra? tive qualities eminently fit him to preside over this modern coliseum*, and all "his numerous corps of assistants, arc most attentive, polite and kind, and appear to run the vost estab? lishment with natural ease and system. Al? ready the Southern element is concentrating at this house, where one is almost certain to meet with friends and acqiiuintances without Ute trouble ol going around In the search lo the other hotels. To enter upon a minnie de? scription ol" this uew wonder ol' the world would be lntiguing, from thc icexhaustibiUity ol'detail. Suffice to say. I hat those who may favor the Immense establishment with their , patronage, cannot fail to be pleased willi the ! genuine courtesy extended, 'and ? to retain ? agreeable remembrances of the uniform and polite civilities showered njion them. The price ol board nt this hotel is exceedingly moderate, ranging from lbree to four dollars c per day, according to locution ol room. I COMMERCIAL y EU'S. r/:e Clittr?ettoii Cotton.
