Fate ot a Fighting Dog.
. BY T. ERST HARTE.
x man he owned a terrier dog
A bob-tailed ornery cuss
And that there dog got that there man
In many an ugly moss;
jor the man he was on his muscle,
And the dflg he was on his bite,
So to kies tbe dog oned animal
Was sure to raise a light.
A woman owned a Thomas cat
That flt at fliteen pounds,
The other cats got np and slid
When that there cat was round.
The man and dog came along one day,
Wneie the woman abe did dwell,
And thc purp negrowled ferociously,
Then went for the cat like-everything.
He tried to chair the neck of the cat,
?Bot the oat he wouldn't be chawed,
So he Tit upon the back or that there dog.
And blt! and chawedl and clawed!
Ohl the hair lt flew! and the dog he yowld
As the claws went into his hide.
And chunoks of flesh was peeled from his back;
Thea he flnmmexed, and he sicked and died!
The man he ripped and cussed, and swere
As?e' gathered a big brickbat,
That he wotld be darned essentially
ir ht aidtft kin the cat!
But thfe old woman allowed she'd be blessed if he
did,
AH ii snatcbed"up an old shot gun.
Which was fired, and pepper?d his diaphragm
With bird shot number one.
They toted him home on a window bund,
And the doctor cured him up!
But he never was known ta ugh: again,
Or to own another pup.
Polks may turn up their snoots at this here rhyme,
I tion't care a cuss for that;
All I want to show ls, that fighting dogs
May tackle the wrong Tom cat.
