Upon ber lace were traceB of great suffering and fear, The cheeks were sunken, the eyee drooping, the lip tremulous, and the figure wasted away, To the first questions propounded to ber, her replies were almost inaudible, but upon being kindly encourijged'by the counsel,- she re? pressed her emotion, and gave her evidence in clear, distinctly-articulated words, though, at times, when some of the questions pointed to her mother's arrest, her feelings overcame her, and she could not answer. The guilty mem? ber made no reply. Cincinnati and ber Southern Railroad Connections. [From the-Knoxville Press.] Chattanooga, as an objective point to Ctn clnnati's operations, i? Important only in the fact that lt ls held as the bem point of oirtsrg ence to tb? various Cotton States. Chatta? nooga, in Cincinnati's calculations, ls regarded simply as a geographical point, which lt ls im? portant to reach, in the general plan of South? ern connections. If the same end can be ac? complished .through other points, and by dif? ferent and cheaper, or shorter lines, and more speedily, lt is the rational argument of the Commercial that the pet scheme of a grand and costly and long-delayed trunk Une should be abandoned, and the opportunities of the hour be seized and Improved at once. It sees no doubt-If not, it can Bee-that already the Knoxville branch of the Louisville and Nashville road is completed to Livingston, within twelve miles of London, Ey., and that the extension of the Kentucky Central, from NlcholasvlUe to Danville, a distance of twenty eight miles, will place Cincinnati in connec? tion with that line. It might see further, that the Knoxville and Ohio (late Knoxville and Kentucky) road, already completed northward a distance ol forty miles, is now in the hands of a company able and determined to complete lt It was bought with special view to its Northern extension, and Its completion may be set down, at last, as a thing of certain ac? complishment. An unfinished gap of eighty eight miles separates. Knox y Hie from the Lebanon branch, : and | this, added to the gap between Danville and NicholasvlUe, leaves a gap of only one hundred and sixteen miles to be closed up, to make complete the railroad communication between Cincin natl and Knoxville. The shortest line yet sur ve} ed for the Cincinnati and Chattanooga line we believe, is two hundred and forty-three miles In length-which ie yet to be construct ed. Ten months wUl suffice to complete the Knoxville line ; the Chattanooga route could be hardly opened in three years, where the present obstacles to its commencement out of the way. By reaching Knoxville, Cincinnati would practically accomplish all that could bc obtained by the direct line to Chattanooga And she would accomplish mach more. She would secure a shorter route to Charleston, Sjuth Carolina, by way of Knoxville, than by way of Chattanooga, and at a much earlier day. The Southern Railroad Association has lately become the purchaser of the Cincinnati, Cumberland Gap and Charleston Railroad. From Morristown, on the East Tennessee, Vir? ginia and Georgia Railroad, this road is com? pleted forty-three miles in the direction of Asheville, North Carolina. An extension of forty-four miles, which wUl certainly be made without delay, wiU take lt to the latter point. From Asheville to Greenville, South Carolina, ls but sixty-five miles. Greenville is the northern terminus of the Greenville and Co? lumbia Railroad, which has lately been pur? chased by the South Carolina Railroad Com? pany, of which Mr. Magrath is President. Simultaneously with the extension of the Mor? ristown Road to Asheville, the road from Greenville wUi be pushed forward to that point, thus completing KnoxvUle's connection with Charleston, by way of Asheville and Greenville, at an early day. The filling up of a gap of one hundmd and nine miles wUl com? plete the connection. So that, by way of Knoxville, Cincinnati can, at less than one fourth the expense, and at a much earlier day, than by another course, secure all her desired Southern connections, being, when at Knox? ville, nearer to Charleston, by way of the line above-mentioned, than when at Cha'tanooga. ?&-rnK RELATIVES, FRIENDS AND icqualntances ?f.
