THE CHARLESTON LIGHT DRAGOONS.-Under
this hame a cavalry company was organized
In Charleston In 1622. but the troop had In
fact existed-much earlier In the present cen?
tury. It was always an independent company,
ind until 1861 had its parades and contests in
time of 'peace with the 'drack cavalry com?
panies ofihe'neighboflog cilles. lAt the' ont'
break of the Secession war, the troop first en?
tered the State service, but soon after .volun?
teered for the war, and was organized into the
Fourth South Carolina Cavalry, Colonel B. H.
Rutledge commanding. Il s war record ls con
jplouously honorable, a very large proportion
rjf its members having sealed with their blood,
upon the battle-fields of Virginia, their devo?
tion to the Southern cause. Since the war lt
las been the earnest desire of the survivors of
the troop to keep the old company together,
md on the 9th Instant they organized into a
permanent association, under the name of the
"Charleston Light Dragoons Association."
rhe lollowlng officers were chosen: Colonel
B. H. Rutledge, president; Lionel C. Nowell,
senior warden; John C. Bickley, junior ward?
en; N. C. Pal i rey, secretary and treasurer.
In addition to the usual charities, we learn
that a chief object of the association, ia to
erect a titting monument to the memory of
those of their company who fell during the
war.
THE COTTON SHIPMENTS OF CHARLESTON.
Contrary to expectations, there 13 a very large
movement of cotton goiog forward, and our
port seems to gather an Increasing volume of.
business. Air the steam lines are fully em?
ployed, and,-" on the "New York ronte. the
steamships are increasing the number of their
trips, and taking out very large cargoes, '.The
Beorgla, Champion and South' Carolina;' thu
week, to New York alone, will move the equi?
valent of a thousand bales a day, while the
Baltimore and Phlladalphia steamers promise
lo have lull employment. We are informed
thal cotton ls now reaching this port from
Memphis, Nashville, Selma, Macon and the
lumerons intermediate depots, and, also,
tom all the upper and eastern counties of
>ur own State-a gratifying evidence of the
ntelllgent and far-reaching railroad manage?
ment which, In spite of great obstacles, pre?
sents so satisfactory a result. The advantages
presented by this port are not exceeded any?
where. We have an outlook .from our wharves
iver the broad Atlantic itself, and railway
ines through the whole cotton belt, and be?
yond as far as St. Louis and Louisville. These
acuities of transportation, by sea and land
ifford promise of a great future to our Dust?
less community. With confidence in our
iel ves and in the destiny of our city, and, with
lard and persistent work on the part of her
iitizens, the prosperity of Charleston is as
inred.

DEATH OF ALDERMAN ELIAS GARDEN.-Tbs
["death of this ros peetabie colored cit' zens Was
announced last evening to Council, and the
news spreading quickly throughout the city
was the occasion of general regret. Alderman
?Garden was a native Charles tonian, and was
born,ot free and respectable parents about the
year 1819. He received the rudiments of edu?
cation under old Dr. Munns, and when a youth
became an apprentice to a butcher in the Mar?
ket. He followed this occupation for the rest
of bis life, and for the last twenty years the
stand served under his superintendence has
been, well known to our citizens. By close
attention to business he had amassed a
competence, and at the breaking out of
the war owned a considerable amount of real
estate and other property.. He was known as .
an honest, liberal and consistent Republican.
Quiet and unobtrusive in character, he attend?
ed , to his business without mingling In the
political broils of the lastVfew years. His In?
fluence among the respectable colored people,
and the real worth of the man, caused him to
be selected as a candidate from Ward 6 by the
Citizens' party last summer, and the Interest
wbioh be felt in the welfare of his native city
induced him to accept the nomination. Since
his, election he han always been present for
the faithful discharge of his duties until the
last meeting of Council when illness prevent?
ed. He has al coe been gradually si uk 1 og, and
expired yesterday afternoon at six o'clock,-at
bia residence in Coming street, near Vander
horst, after an illness of fifteen days' duration.
He was a member of St. Mark's Church, where
his funeral services will take place to-day and
be attended by the Mayor and Aldermen.
