The delay lu rendering the verdict was caused by the coroner's en desmon to lind the sawyer. The result bas' proved^-however, that that gentleman does not court vulgar notoriety. A MODEL SB OE HOUSE. Among the most striking evidences of the progress af Charleston Is the rapid multipli? cation of new and handsome retail establish? ments on Sing street. Conspicuous among these is the bright and inviting shoe house of Lewis Elias <% Co., wbioh opens its doors to? day under the Masonic Temple, at the corner of King and Wentworth streets. Tne store ls fitted op in a style that oannot fall to prove attractive to the public, acid the enterprising proprietors pledge themselves that their etock shall in every respect be worthy of the store. Tney mean to keep np an assortment of boots and sboes that, will enable every casto- j mer to be suited, and at the same time to keep down prices, so as to tempt every one that ls suited to buy. All ready they have a range ol novelclta in their Hoe from the tiniest doll shoe to the ponderous yet admirably made cavalry ooot, which well repay Inspection, and their array of ladies'and misses' fancy boots and Bllppers is positively bewildering. They open under floe auspices, and will, doubtless, do a thriving business. PROBABLE DISASTER" TO A VESSEL-TBK s CHOOSER J. P. FARLANE-The schooner in d-x arrived here yesterday from Bil tl more. GLENCOE,. 10 MILES S, W. or ASHVILLE, N. C., ? November li. 1872. ) C. 0. Trumbo, Secretary W. L. J. Elfie Club, Charleston, 8? C.: DEAK Snt-Tour resolutions ol October 15th touch me deeply. No one who bas been long connected with the W. L. I. o? old need be ashamed to acknowledge this. All of the former members will understand lt. The perpetuation of the spirit aod influence of the old company, as we received lt from the advance* guard who preceded us. would oe, in my opinion, to preserve treasures not always to ba found lathe high places of the earth. Whatever this spirit and influence wa?, I feel as il I had lived In an atmosphere of it. I saw lt ia the dally ltleot' those who led the company v/hen ii was young, 'their geDlal ?sympathy, their kindly courtesy, theirdeilcate sense of rLiht, their nice Ideas of honor, their earnest patriotism, were models for Btudy worth far more than we can estimate. Then, lt was not one or two works of this Kind tor us to look up to and be lormed by. i mere was no Jack of toem. they Ailed ihe company und gave to lt Its full lone and charac? ter. How have I noticed Its Influence on those younger, coming after me r I ao not refer merely to tne war ; but In that where was Hs Influence not lett ? Point out the soot If you can from the Potomac io the Kio Grande where its force was not felt ana acknowledged ! Giauce your eye over the ranks ol those who I nave led >our industrial pursuits; aod who, amOnK all of your citizen?, have done better than ttnse wbo under the old Eutaw flag learned that wonderfully useful lesson for all the bailies of life, " There's uo such word as fall." In no other organization was the valae of work better understood. Ia the iweutj-two years of my active mem? bership, I cannot call to mind a single latlure. Was lt a dioner, ball, visit to or reception of other companies? Was it the drill, the parade, the march or duties to other compan? ies? Was lt the acquisition of military knowl ; edge, or a call to Florida, lt was always the same sure thing; and why? Because the work was put to It, and this waa ibe spirit of ihe company. Neglect of duty would not have oeen toleraied In any one. The Influence has not bf en confined to the members of the com? pany, not even to Charleston or the State. It hw extended luelf to other communities, and I have watched lt even In tbe ranks of the Federal armies. Tn? kino ness and cour leay of the o'dcom-: pany has otten been returned to our wounded and captive by those, who themselves being' good Judges ot what ts moat houorabie among meo, would Dame tbe spirit and Influence of ihe Washington Light Infantry, as among the best ot Charleston's good thu gs. Well may we study to know all that lt has been aud has accompllxtied. Well may we work to transmit lt to others. Thanking you for your offer of a pl?cela ihe work, aod re? porting myself for July, I am, yours, truly, LEWIS M. HATCH. CHARLESTON, November 10,1872. To C. 0. Trumbo, Secretarg W. L. I. Rifle Club: DEAR SIB-Permit me to acknowledge the receipt of your note, as secretary of the Wash Icgton Light Infantry Rifle Club, communica? ting a resolution ol that body to me BB an honorary member cf the "Old Washington Light Iufantry," that the honorary members j of that ancient company "be respectfully In? vited to accept aod assume eimllar honorary Mailon ) with tbe Washington Light Infantry Bide Club." Nothing could be more agreeable to all my feelings, as a man and citizen, and as a lover of my State and country, an? all that bears the name, and ls prouo of ; ti? asso? ciation ol the Washington Light Infantry. Let me add that I sympathise profoundly with the wise and patrlotio leeilogs that bave prompted this movement, and cannot but trust that the body you represent will long survive to emulate the example of the re? nowned company of wbich lt ls ihe successor; and In peace and In war to advance the best interests of onr Slate and country, and be, in all respects, worthy of the great and good man whose name lt bears. Permit me. through you, to convey to the Washington Light Infantry Bille Olnb my grateful Benae ot the honor done me, by their [ request to become thus>a?soolaied with them. lam, dear sir, very respectfully, truly yours, Gio. 0. BKTAN. A WORD EOR THE 8RIVERISQ POOR. \ ' The cold weather brings numberless calls for help to the good ladles of the Fuel Society, whose power to aid the deserving poor, bow ever, is limited by the amount ot assistance they happen to receive from those who are blessed with enough to give. Those who gather around their ruddy ores and comforta? ble hearths, should give a pitying thought to the hundreds in our own city who are shiver? ing for the want of a bushel of coal, or a lew logs of wood. The liberal aod tbe chari? table may feel assured that their bounty will be bestowed with all discretion, and only to those who sadly need lt, by dispensing lt through the Fuel Society. Contributions for the society may be sent to Fogartle's depot, or to the office of TBS NEWS. THE CH A rx AN SISTERS. "Little; Don Giovanni" and Other At? tractions nt. the Academy Monday: Nigh?. Ford. As tho expected throng of Masonic visitors In the city will be sure to crowd the bouse, those who desire good seats will do well to secure them to-day. HOTEL ARRIVALS, DECEMBER 6. Chalesron. A.
